We all know how good Doom is, but what about the other classic shooters? What about the Duke Nukems? The Shadow Warriors? Or maybe some other really obscure ones?

Give me the best retro FPS games you got.

I didn't/don't play many FPS games, but Nam was big in my high school. I got it installed on all the comps in our JROTC computer lab, and thus we basically had lan parties at least once a week.

It wasn't so good at the actual game, but the other kids seemed pretty thankful I set things up for them to play it.

Blood, Duke, Shadow Warrior, Quake, Unreal. That's about it. Everything else was mediorcre

system shock 1 is pretty good if you play it with a mouselook mod.

It's more "ultima in spess" than "wants to be doom" though.

imo the PC version of Powerslave aka Exhumed; and Redneck Rampage Rides Again In Arkansas (the sequel to Redneck Rampage) are both very underrated.

Powerslave's gameplay and controls aren't excellent (though I can share protips to make the controls better if you're interested) but it shines in level design as it has some of the best Doom-era level design I've ever seen. Also great atmosphere with a setting that is not common for FPS.

Rides Again fixed most of the issues of the first game, also has much better level design and has added more cool like new enemies and driveable vehicules. The problem is that nobody played it because everyone stopped at the original one.

RR:RA has good gameplay, much better than its prequel. However, it doesn't have the depth and intensity of Blood, nor does it have the challenge of Shadow Warrior. It's more like DN3D.

I'll make a video.

When I'm praising Powerslave and RR:RA, keep in mind that I am a real Build engine fanboy. Most people wouldn't like those games, but if you're into retro FPS, they're worth checking out and are underrated imo.

>>2054173
Copy pasta:
Someone just told me 2 super cool things about the game. Sounds like they are glitches, but it makes playing much better :

- if you set the "run" key as "capslock", you can actually have autorunning. No need to hold that shift key all the time anymore!
- and if you use that capslock autorunning; you can strafe super fast! The superfast strafing doesn't work with the 'strafe left' and 'strafe right' keys, however it works if you use 'strafekey + left' or 'strafekey + right' (again only if you use the autorunning capslock). So, by settings the Q and D keys to 'left' and 'right' (rather than strafe left/right in a normal WASD setting) and use a key like Lshift or Lctrl as "strafe" key; and hold that key anytime you want to strafe, you can use that superfast strafing.

Oh ; and another protip from me to make playing a little more comfortable too, though not a glitch this time : in this game you have to hold a key to be able to look up/down with the mouse. Well, if you set that key to a mousebutton like RMB or MMB, it makes mouselook much more convenient....

This is my personal favorite fps from that era. I genuinely believe it's superior to doom and build engine games largely due to the superb objective and mission design. You always had something to actually do in every mission, and it really does a lot for immersion and navigating the levels. I love doom and Duke and blood and all that jazz but every level was just find the keys/cards and get to the end of the level.

Also I don't know what the fuck kind of black magic the Lucasarts guys practiced to get so much verticality into their engine.

The reason I love Doom and Build games is because of the absence of mission and other bullshit objectives. Pure arcade-ish gameplay has better replay value and will always be fun. Story and objective based games are designed more like movies. I never liked Goldeneye or Perfect Dark (well PD is decent).

Well, your loss m8. My friends and I played and enjoyed everything, from N64, to PSX, to PC. That said, I can't play GE or PD anymore in 2014 while I still love to play BUILD/DOOM/Quake. Back in the day I 100%'d both games though and enjoyed the fuck out of their multiplayer etc.

You said earlier that those games don't have replay value but I disagree. GEPD both had some really awesome features that games today oughta do, like more mission objectives on harder difficulties, and two extra unlockable levels that were only available if you beat the game on the two harder difficulties. Then there were all the unlockable cheats that you could only get by speedrunning levels at certain difficulties. 100%'ing both games took me a good while and was satisfying as hell when I did it. The 4 player local multiplayer was also damn good times.

Sure the games had mission objectives, but the actual gameplay itself was, for the most part, very 'arcadey' and run and gun, apart from the stealth aspects which added good variety. Both games also had really great level design iirc and the guns were satisfying as fuck to shoot, especially PD. I would have liked to check out the Perfect Dark HD re-release on XBL but I don't have a 360.

But yeah, as great as the games were for me then, I can't touch them anymore in 2014 because of the framerate and controls, especially on the N64 pad. I guess you couldn't stand that even back then.

>> No.2057009

>>2056832
I feel lucky that I got to enjoy the 4 player fun at the time with friends. But yea the controls and heavy fog to disguise the poor draw distance make it unplayable once you get use to having a mouse.

And to be honest Goldeney and Perfect Dark got replaced by later games that did more game modes, better controls, and better multiplayer even on consoles let alone something you can LAN.

as someone who likes marathon:

absolute shit tier level design, and marathon 1 had sprite design right out of a children's coloring book. Also, the network model is retarded such that even if the faggots who run the aleph one project wanted to implement better netcode, it would still be impossible.

the only things it really has going for it are story and atmosphere...

That's why I didn't like it. I was already playing 16 person games of Quake when Goldeneye came out and somehow "invented" fps multiplayer. Plus that controller is abominable on its own right, let alone compared to a mouse and keyboard setup - you can't even aim and move at the same time. Also, fog past 10 feet everywhere.

It honestly offered nothing that people weren't already doing years ago with mods in doom/quake/whatever.

Actually you could. There was a control setting that was equivalent to modern dual analog controls, with movement set to the C buttons and aim set to analog.

And even with the default control scheme, you could still move and aim/shoot at the same time by by strafing and using the analog stick.

Even on the newest builds of 1964? I thought Goldeneye was flawless.

I like Perfect Dark, but I'm frustrated by the occasional moments of horrible slowdown. I wish you could lower the graphics settings to get better framerate.

I still enjoy the game a good deal though, and I first bought and played it this past december, so I'm hardly a nostalgiafag for it. That said, TimeSplitters Future Perfect is a much better game, which makes sense because the same people made it.

I do appreciate that PD has tons of features which still aren't matched by newer shooters, or even TimeSplitters games. I just appreciate the character/weapon/multiplayer variety and the better controls and framerate more than those unique aspects of PD.

my problems with it aren't in controls. compared even to something like doom, it has tiny maps.
compared to something like system shock 1, it has simplistic design aims.

I'll admit, I nostalgia'd hard when I got it running in 1964, and I remember playing it fondly when I was a little kid...

Honestly, I could not completely enjoy a FPS on a console since CoD4 came out. Very few retro shooters were any good on consoles. I have heard that the PS1 had some good ports. The Dreamcast had a DREADFUL Unreal Tournament port (released in 2001, but still /vr/ since the console and original game are from 1999). The PSX version of Descent lags.

Lol, I actually enjoyed the Dreamcast version of Unreal Tournament. The reason to this is because on PC, my friends would get dominated by me, even if they went 2 against 1 on me; but on Dreamcast, playing with a pad made things more even and they actually stood a chance against me, so that was the only we'd play.

Also the exclusives levels of the Dreamcast version are pretty good. One of the DM maps I made for DN3D (called Canyon Bunker), its layout is inspired by the memory I had of my favourite exclusive map of the Dreamcast version of UT.
