They didn't have one. The whole mascot thing wasn't really prevalent until the 90s.

Probably the closest Atari has ever had to an original mascot would be Bentley Bear from "Crystal Castles" who was also one of the main characters in "Atari Karts" on the Jaguar

Fun Fact: He also had a small cameo in Wreck-it-Ralph

Atari's most iconic character is probably Paperboy.

Which is kinda sad, really.

It takes like ten seconds to look up a game on Wikipedia and find out who made it. There's no excuse for this shit.

Anyway, I nominate the dragond-ducks from Adventure.

>Pong (marketed as PONG) is one of the earliest arcade video games; it is a tennis sports game featuring simple two-dimensional graphics. While other arcade video games such as Computer Space came before it, Pong was one of the first video games to reach mainstream popularity. The aim is to defeat an opponent in a simulated table-tennis game by earning a higher score. The game was originally manufactured by Atari Incorporated (Atari), who released it in 1972.

So who's the mascot of xbox?

>> No.2053331

Atari had no mascot because at the time, in the states at least, video game consoles did everything possible to look as cutting edge as possible.

The late 80s mascots craze? only happened because Nintendo wanted to portray their system as a toy, and then in the 90s Sega and Sony had mascots because they needed any "in" possible to take down King Nintendo.

Atari more or less had a monopoly on the market before the crash. They didn't need a mascot because if someone wanted to sell their game in the home, they had to go through Atari. Even nintendo had to put their characters on the 2600.

Donkey Kong and Mario Bros were released on a number of systems. Exclusivity was rare.

I'd call Pitfall Harry the 2600 mascot even though that's an Activision game. But I also consider Crash Bandicoot the PS1's mascot even though he never officially was.

Not a bad idea but I vote Paperboy. Everyone I knew with any Atari console had Paperboy and nearly every arcade ever had a machine at one point or another.

I'd say anything from Gauntlet, but none of them have the 'tude Paperboy does or the Hand from Klax or the Marble from Marble Madness, but neither of them are mascot material.
Definitely Paperboy.

It's so god damn sad seeing Atari in this state. It was my first system and I have fond memories. And I loved watching interviews with Nolan Bushnell and the Atari staff of programmers.

Long story short Nolan sold Atari to a bunch of corporate dicks who considered Nolan's management techniques obscene and the staff no more talented than the next minimum wage code monkey off the street. So when Nolan signed over the company there was a lifetime non-compete clause in the contract and when he left the company due to new management he effectively banned himself from the game industry. And when the staff asked to see a portion of the profit on games that sold well the management told them to fuck off. So everyone with talent left the company and formed Activision. Since then Atari has bankrupted and changed hands numerous times and is currently parked in a holding company known for gambling and porn sites. And the only recent development was a license to Denny's to port Atari games to mobile featuring breakfast menu items.

I wish things could have been different. Justin Barwick owner of GCW was trying to buy Atari and make the GCW-Zero an Atari brand handheld. He didn't raise enough money but I would have preferred that fate. Atari selling hardware for open source freeware devs making retro games.
