Who is "the face" of classic Phantasy Star games? Technically, it should be Alis but Nei seems to be more popular.

No, they're not related in any way. Alis/Alisa left the Algo star system without an heir to colonise elsewhere as seen in Phantasy Star Gaiden. Alys' name in the Japanese version is Lyla. PS4 translation just changes names around for no real reason.

The story for all the games is related, as they all take place in the same solar system and involve the same antagonist, but most of the games take place centuries apart from eachother.

I played 4 first and not knowing the story from the first 3 basically only resulted in me missing some references to those events, but I still understood the game.

Rune/Noah/Lutz appears in I, II and IV. Wren appears only in III. The Wren from IV is "Fowren" a Wren-type android but not the same Wren as the one in III.
Wrens are machines like Nissan Altimas are machines. There are newer models and come in different colours, but they same basic design each. Maybe he was called 'Fowren" in Japan because the game was Phantasy Star FOUR (so FOURWren rather than THREEWren). Like how each new Altima has another year appended to it (2004 Altima! 2006 Altima! 2014 Altima!). Prolly not, but it's a nifty idea.

>>2054276
>>2053751
III happens concurrently with IV and is not necessary to play to enjoy IV. Think of IV as the true III and III as a side project.
That said, IV does the job well enough to cover the events of the prior games in a concise enough manner that playing the other games would not be necessary to enjoy it. It's a fairly stand alone game.

>>2053438
>>2053426
Alys/Lyla would have made a better protag than faggy-named Chaz. Chaz doesn't have the same sense of tenacity and duty that she did. Having him fill the role of protag was poor script choice, IMO. I could see Alys wanting to do all that good stuff, but I don't see what Chaz' Motaviation (u c wut i did there) was for doing all that stuff.
Plus, Alys extorting money from the people she helped woulda been fun.

Personally? I think Nei sucks. She was boring and stupid and I hated her. And fuck her for not wanting to equip things I want her to equip.
Nonetheless, she's better known, so her over Alis, I'm afraid. Alys could never bee the face cuz she kicks the bucket a fifth of the way through PSIV.

And I liked III's idea even though it had tonnes of glitches and poor execution and no story-telling. I and IV are the best then II then III.

As a side project for him to do on his own, he famously translated the script for a very, very popular Japanese RPG a few years ago. Did he do it into Italian? No. He did it into English. Why? Specifically to reach a wider audience.

If I could read moon, I'd spend a bit of my extra time translating game scripts into English, but I don't. I read Korean but there aren't many Korean RPGs anyone's really interested in having translated.

My uncle, an Italian, married a Japanese woman. Living in the same building as they did, I grew up as much in their house as I did in my own and my brothers and I picked up conversational Japanese from my aunt. She spoke Japanese to her own half-Japanese children often as well as to us, to a lesser degree.
My aunt taught my cousins how to read and write basic Japanese and the translator cousin studied it at uni to get a better grasp, so he can better read and write it as well as speak.

I have tried to learn to read it, but I can't. It's been since discovered that I have moonlexia.

Did you know that different sorts of dyslexia exist for different writing systems? I can read alphabets of all sorts quite well but have strong difficulties with logographic writing systems. Japanese being a mix of syllabary and logograms is very difficult for me to read. :-(

It's not uncommon for multilingual people to suffer monolingual dyslexia. There's a famous case of a Japanese-Australian who was bilingual with Japanese and English. His family moved to Japan and discovered that though he can read and write English very, very well, reading and writing Japanese was nearly impossible for him. I think he moved back to Aussieland as soon as he could do so.

Same thing here: alright, but a weaker version of Wren, with some light healing instead of extra cans of whoop-ass. It sucks having 2/5 members needing special items to heal though, and she really doesn't make the late-game cut damage-wise.

I preferred to use Raja for the "game breaking" and because it's just nice to have a dedicated healer.

I also used Hahn once to beat the game just for his sword combo with Chaz. It pales compared to Grand Cross, anyway. Hahn is the game's biggest pussy, just next to worthless. It was distasteful to use him.

But it IS doable, and possible if you set someone on Star-Dew duty, because Rika WILL run out of TP if you try to use Nasar all the time(and she should be putting up Deban and Saner anyway to start and when PD nullifies it). Yeah, that was it. Neo Palm.

After playing that shitty SNES RPG, Secret of the Stars, I came up with an idea. In SotS, the gameplay switches between two parties. While this isn't remotely unique, I think it's a nifty idea in an otherwise shitty, shitty game.
PSIII's generation system and SotS party switch system gave me an idea that I doubt I will ever see implemented. I'd love to see a PSIV hack (or a homebrew that looks and functions a lot like it) that looks like PSIII, takes place in the same setting but functions with a party switch system between a party on the Alisia III and one on the Neo Palm with The Great Light acting as the catalyst between the parties and the true main character.
Thoughts?

>Way better than PSIV

PSIV's cut ins beat the hell out of ... well pretty much everything shy of Lunar 2's movies released at the time.

3 is just an all around ugly empty looking dull game visually and mechanically. All that goddamn dead space

of all of its many problems the biggest with 3 is that everything just feels dead, especially when compared to other games in the series or at the time

I like those character portraits better than the character portraits in PSII or PSIV. The cutscenes don't count.
Did you know PSIV was originally intended to be for Sega CD but Sega was like "yeah... no." cuz the system was already on its way out by the time PSIV was to be released, so they reworked it as a MD/Genesis title.
I hear there's footage of the animations made for the CD version floating somewhere.

I like the comic book cutscenes from PSIV. Imagine PSIII done well and with that in it. That'd be awesome.

well thats kind of the thing. It's like they basically wrote an outline of a plot and forgot to fill in the details.

Miue and Wren especially had a lot of potential as characters being the ever faithful servents of the royal family, dutifully guarding their kids and having to watch their former comrades wither and die.

Also you couldn't bang Mieu. major crime right there

I've said it in other PS threads, PSIII always felt like an unfinished prototype. Mostly because that's exactly what it was. It had the makings of awesomeness, but ultimately just fell short. A remake that fixes all of its problems would be pretty awesome.

It would have to be a A LOOOOOOOOOOT of content. What's included in the game is seriously the most bare of bare bones shit.

>it was rushed, wasn't it?

It came out a year after 2, which itself probably whipped the team out. No way could they make a game as big as that was in such a small amount of time. Even 4 had like a 3 year gap

so Im guessing yes. It was rushed to hell

If I remember the story right, there was basically a second team working on the game that started in the middle of the development cycle of PSII.

kind of makes sense, seeing how disjointed it is when compared to the second one.

Probably had a reference in PSU like the other PS1 characters. The translators of that game just didn't give a fuck about previous translations so most refrences to the classic games got lost in translation.

Hey I've never played Phantasy Star and want to start. Should I just start from the first and work my way forward? Also, what is up with the 'online' games? Like they are remade for the gamecube and stuff, but there are singleplayer modes?

>> No.2070731

>>2070246
Yeah, I mostly play GC Ep. 1 & 2 Plus offline these days, and there's plenty of quests and hunting/grinding you can do offline.

You can also play with up to 3 other people via split-screen, though no quests are available in this multi-player mode. It's still fun though. Or you could go head to head with a friend in Battle mode offline, or you could do offline time trials for various rare weapon prizes, too.

If you're willing to spend the cash for an actual copy, then you may as well go full-retard and also grab a GC Broadband Adapter and keyboard to play online. There are various guides which show how to easily do this on youtube, but it's pretty rare to find someone to play with, to be honest. When, you do though, it's generally a pretty good time, even when the other person is laughably bad at such a simple game.

I'd sag play 1 and 2 then 4. If you start with 4 you might be put off by bad gameplay in the first two.

Give three a wide berth. Not worth trying.
