Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road deserves nothing more than a 2/10. It's awful.

Because Rainbow Road is supposed to be the ultimate challenge in the game. It's supposed to put all of the skills you've acquired in the game to the test. MK64's Rainbow Road is a cakewalk, it has no challenge. For fuck's sake, the entire thing has guard rails so there's no penalty for fucking up turns.

Worst RR in the entire MK series.

Rainbow Road N64 was NEVER meant to be some final challenge. It winded down the game. Listen to the fun, yet difficult SNES's music and the subtle celebration the N64 has going on.

For Christ's sake it even has guard rails.

This, I always felt rainbow road in 64 is more of a credits level, where you sort of reflect on the whole game with the constellations for all the characters and whatnot.

The level is piss easy and I would probably rate it pretty low but the shortcut makes it fun in multiplayer, it's all about who manages to pull it off which sort of adds another (unintended) dimension of skill to the level.

I like it, but it's a disappointment for what I expect for a grand finale of sorts. For such a long race I'm bummed there's little variety, in visuals and in challenge. Especially compared to the rest of Special Cup.

I see MK64's Rainbow Road as a reaction to SMK's RR, which was brutal. I think they avoided the "ultimate challenge" approach to make a long, visually impressive level. I enjoy it for what it is, but I do think something more challenging would be nice.
