I got them from either http://www.cncworld.org/ or http://planetcnc.gamespy.com/, it has been a while so I can't actually remember.

Neither of those sites are working for me right now, but I do have all the maps for C&C1/Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert 1 saved here.

It's a psychological thing, levels in video games always seem bigger when you can only see one screen of it at a time. Especially if it's like, an RPG or something, where your progress through the game is constantly being interrupted with story and combat.

The mapping was improved in this game. Things aren't quite as square. For example, in Red/Blue, a group of trees or a mountain will be square. Things are more varied and naturelike in this game. There's also not as many empty looking areas.

This fucking place haunted me as a kid, there was one of the turrets of the castle that had like a windmill thing, you can see them best at Figaro Castle, but because this one was ruined, you could only see like one or two pixels of the windmill, which would spin. Because of this, it always seemed like there was this thing "flashing" just out of reach, like a puzzle I was never able to figure out. I fucking combed that place for hours trying to figure it out. Then I replayed the game as an adult on an emulator and fucked around with the layers and found out it was a fucking propeller.

Please tell me I wasn't the only one tormented by this "mystery" as a kid

I like that these games made really good use of color, but they seem like very disparaging and not cohesive when you look at the entire map at once.

Link's Awakening, on the other hand, actually blended them to seem like one cohesive land when put together. You can still tell when you're in a specific area but the whole map looks like it belongs on one island, not like those other ones
