Whenever there's talk of Landstalker (and Alundra) a lot of people bring up and discuss this game. It's about time it gets it's own thread.

Your thoughts on it? Some regard it has an hidden gem others consider it unplayable.

What did you like/didn't like about it?

Dark Savior had similar graphics to Grandia, which made me interested in it, but watching a lot of gameplay footage it just doesn't look that fun to me.

I really enjoyed Dark Saviour.

It had almost no gameplay but it was as atmospheric as fuck. There was a real feeling of doom on that prison island and a certain mysterious quality about the storyline that I liked. Like stumbling across the massive skeleton of some giant prisoner. And the aforementioned theory that it could all be a dream. I really feel this.

I like a lot about the game, but some of the challenges feel a bit arbitrary, some things are completely underwhelming (like those grand total of 7 enemies you encounter in non-battle, like those bats), and the combat is pretty lousy with an under-utilized capture mechanic.

I like the game's story, as this anon said >>2032762
The world-building in the game, despite being in a singular small location, felt very fleshed out. I like how many things are only sort of cryptically hinted at. And while I don't think the game is a case of "it was only a nightmare" I think it's trying to deal with the clusterfuck of parallel universes (in the usual problematic way). I think that Parallel 4 is the real final ending.

It all has to do with Bilan since he is an actual evil entity, and the cosmic event of the comet means that some bad supernatural shit had to go down.

Evil Garian is a caricature of Garian, and I still think it's stupid that the game hinges around Jalapeno Juice!

As for gameplay related questions:

>> No.2035908

All enemies with the exception of Bilan can be captured, iirc.

You can use anyone to capture any monster - you just have to use a charge attack when the monster has the flashing "capture chance" or whatever over them. This can be tricky to pull off - I only managed to capture a few in my playthroughs. If it is too hard you can basically brute-force it as Garian without too much trouble.

As for your plot question, you'll have to find out eh? =)

We already explained that just because Alundra isn't in isometric perspective doesn't stop it thematically for linking up with Landstalker. It has more of the game-feel (dungeons, puzzles, RPG elements) that typified Landstalker. Dark Savior has a few elements of that experience, but it is much more idiosyncratic. Perhaps too much so. But still.

>>2036732

In spoilers, which twist are you referring to?

I don't buy the whole "it's a carbon nightmare" thing. I think the story ends with the destruction of Jailer's Island. Kind of tragic that everyone on Jailer's Island died to shit, but that's sort of what happened in Parallel 1 anyhow. The place was pretty doomed no matter what.

>It has more of the game-feel (dungeons, puzzles, RPG elements) that typified Landstalker.
Dark Savior has all of that. Even moreso, it's done in the same style as Landstalker because of the same team and more importantly the same lead designer. It's easy to spot that they were made by the same people. Couple that with the fact that Alundra isn't isometric, and it's easy to see that Dark Savior shares more common elements with Landstalker.

SPOILERS BELOW

During parallel IV you find that various people will talk to you cryptically about the Dark Savior. One of them says that whose world survives(either garian's or carbon garian's) will cause the person to die in the process.

After defeating carbon garian, you get to the submarines and find Kay. "Garian" doesnt recognise Kay:
Garian: ...Is that you...Kay?
Kay: ... Yes ...
Garian: I have a message from him
Kay: Him...? You dont mean...
Garian: LETS MEET IN OUR DREAMS
Kay: What?
Garian: He just told me to tell you that

Dark Savior's tone is far more serious and it's hardly a cheerfull adventure exploring the land.

similarities:
- camera perspective
- some platforming elements like button pressing to open doors and floating spike balls

The ship sequence in the beginning of the game is one of my all-time favorite moments in video games period.

What I really love about Dark Savior, and by extension Landstalker, are the settings and situations. The games always have a sort of high adventure feel to them that you experience when you watch a good swashbuckling movie. I'm also a fan of the isometric element present in both, and Climax really managed to give both games fluid controls that make navigation a joy.

Dark Savior in particular handles this well, nowadays I can go through Silver Castle at a near constant top speed. It's a lot of fun. The combat system is also interesting, instead of fighting enemies on the map which would probably be clunky at best, they added a fighting game sort of battle system which is simply yet fun since it adds special moves to characters. The capture system is what really sells the system, though it would have been nice if it were a tad easier.

The graphics are well done for its era. The 3D can be strange in that Saturn/PS sort of way, but the visual style of the game is very distinct and really makes an interesting setting that vaguely reminiscent of a Buichi Terasawa manga. I'm really glad they decided to use 2D sprites for the characters.

Overall, Dark Savior manages to blend action, platforming and puzzles together very well. I like that the game focuses on exploring the island and events, with battles being less frequent but more important. The parallel and story is another thing I really enjoy. The first time I saw Carbon Garian, I shat bricks as the plotlines came together. It was extremely memorable.

I didn't get to play this gem when it came out, but I'm glad I found it when I did. It's a pity Climax hasn't done anything quite like Landstalker and Dark Savior in recent times. The Landstalker PSP release could have been a great boon towards making a new title but sadly we'll never get it now. RIP.

A hunt for Evil:
Garian chases Bilan throughout the entire game. Bilan is always one step ahead and kills everything in his path. Warden Kurtliegan sacrifices himself to help stop Bilan's rampage. Kay falls into the Warden's vat of Bilanium and transforms into a gigantic blue rose. Alibaba, a giant head inside one of the island's castles, gives you the key to defeating Bilan. Inside the ruins you discover the holy sword of Rajeen which allows you to kill a giant mutated Bilan.

A hunt for the Heart
Garian kills Bilan aboard Seabandits. The plot now revolves around stopping Warden Kurt's plan to use Bilanium to make a super monster and conquer the world. Garian's brother inexplicably winds up on the island, having been Bilan's host on the Seabandits. Kay does not fall into the vat, but Drizzit the inmate does, turning into a hideous polygon monster that wreaks havoc. Garian rescues Kay and the two team up to stop the Warden and rescue Alibaba. Garian joins the JLO, a rebel group of prisoners of whom Drizzit was a member. The JLO allow Garian into their secret tunnels which bring him into the Warden's mansion, where he attempts to steal the diary of Wouda. Going into the ruins again, Kay and Garian discover Kay's sister, also inexplicably on the island. He travels to the three castles on the island, cornering the Warden who has taken Kay and Alibaba hostage. Alibaba is revealed to by Kay's father, and then revealed to be not her father because Kay is the spirit of the Silver Statue that was missing in the Silver Castle. The Warden doesn't really give a shit and takes the rings of gold and copper from Garian. Kay uses an ancient spell to release the power of silver inside her at the cost of her life, giving that power to Garian. Garian shit-kicks the Warden and the spirit of Kay takes out the mutated Drizzit. Kay's spirit returns to life, Drizzit is free from his mutation, and in general is a happy ending.

If Carbon Garian really wanted to trick Garian into killing him, why didn't he bait him right away and get killed?

The guy is so opposite Garian, he even has a goofy laugh "kukukuku" and a snidely "I'll kill anyone who gets in my way!"

An awful lot of running around causing shit when it would have been easier to trick Garian aka the not-the-sharpest-tool-in-the-shed into beating the shit out of him.
"Hey Garian I am actually Bilan!"
"What? Oh noes!"

Why did all of Carbon's hard-gay thugs try and kill you to help out Carbon?

Even Indigo, who throws out that quote, tries to kill you. Obviously these guys all want the "Dark Savior" to appear (a thing that is never explained), so you'd think they'd be invested in seeing this outcome happen.

Indigo, Musashi, these guys are all so full of shit.

I think Garian's line at the end is him remembering his parallels 1 and 2 (which technically "didn't happen" for him (he doesn't remember their events except only as dreams) and calling out to that. Just my thoughts.

>>2039975
I was thinking about that, but the bad ending of Parallel 2 complicates this. It states that a Bilan-doppleganger Tracy goes to the mainland with an army of Bilans and wipes out humanity. Obviously there are real stakes involved outside of Jalapeno Juice, to drink or not to drink (But thou must).

Alright. Keep in mind that this part of the game was clearly rushed in development and there are a bunch of different theories and possible plotholes.

Here's what we are specificly told:
When you arrive the island in every parallel, there's a drunk fellow blocking your pass. He will only allow you to go through if you manage to drink a whole bottle of "jalapeno juice"(it's some sort of booze in the japanese version). Garian is forced to drink it and soon enough starts tripping balls.
There's a kid in town there to visit his father that confronts garian since bounty hunters are the reason his father's in jail. Garian is wasted and mistakes the kid for the monster Bilan. In the moment Garian is about to attack him, the ninja women is watching the situation and throws him one of the magical blue roses. In that moment the dimensions split. In one dimension Garian wasnt affected by the rose and therefore kills the child. he is then sentenced to being Carbon Frozen(a la Han Solo), the ultimate punishment reserved for the worst criminals. In the other dimension the rose hits garian's face, causing his scare and allowing him to stop in time before hitting the kid.

Now in parallel 3 the prisoners' rebellion organization is planning to awaken their leader that also got carbon frozen. The Warden fears this and teams up with Garian to stop it. Garian and the Warden get to the carbon room too late and all prisoners that got carbon frozen are freed. The Warden gets killed. Among the carbon members was Carbon Garian. Jack the bird then explains that two dimensions that should have never crossed have met and his causing troubles in the space time continuum. Both worlds are fighting for their chance to exist. To increase his chance of existing Carbon Garian and the other carbon members that teamed up with him intend to kill Garian's friends. To increase his chance of existing the Garian sets out to save his friends.

In Parallel 4 he doesn't recognize Kay but has precognition (from remembering his self in parallel 2) that he "knows" her. In the same way that Kay "knows" Garian from her dreams despite never meeting him in 3.

Same with Bruno, who says that he saw Garian "in his dreams" before he died in Parallel 3 from Bilan. They remember their other selves only in the context of dreams.

Definitely. I and II feel like actual games and complement each other. You see different areas, things take wildly different turns, etc. it's good. The game doles out all of its good will and surprises in these two chapters and really sucks players in.

III and IV try to introduce something new and interesting, but they really fail in execution. No new areas, no real new challenges aside from speedrun - they feel so rushed and incomplete. Hell, there's no reason to split up Parallel III and IV, since III is 20 minutes, tops. What are you, psychic? There was at max two posters talking about it and even then it might have been the same person due to the posting style. I know at least one of them has been saying the same thing over and over about how he feels about the later parallels ITT (which is probably you).

Anyway, III is the good version of parallel I in that not everything goes horribly wrong and Garian discovers the truth of what's going on. That's why it's called a hunt for the lies. Parallel I is the setup of the general story but everything goes to shit. Parallel II focuses on the setting of the island and its inhabitants.

Parallel III, once again, is where Garian finally figures out what's going on and avoids disaster by having premonitions from his dreams (parallel I and II). Basically Parallel III is the "true" parallel. Parallel IV is basically the continuation of III, but it's split up because A) it's a time attack with no saves and B) because storywise the tone drastically changes due to all of information being available and Garian find a new purpose in being on the island.

Also, you keep saying there are a bunch of plot holes and coming up with crazy theories but you're just plain wrong about basically everything. The game lays down the story clearly if you pay attention. I'm pretty sure you're the same guy who complains about Dark Savior being in Landstalker threads but thinks that it's alright to talk about Alundra in Landstalker threads (and that it's somehow closer to Landstalker than Dark Savior kek)

I explained up above that they feel incomplete. Length-wise they are nowhere near as involved as I and II. You do not see any new areas and solve puzzles that you had basically just solved one parallel earlier. That in itself is not exciting.

The story does not feel as fleshed out, because it has no room to explore or explain anything. This can be forgiven in the case of IV since it's supposed to be "wrapping things up." But III feels barren and practically lifeless. If had taken you on a completely different journey to reach the same conclusion, then I would have been much happier with it.

They are the weakest parts of the game, from a mechanical perspective (not offering new challenges to the player), and plotwise they stumble with a lot of vague and cryptic events.

Only three of them are.

I suspect that these beta screens hint at a much larger game that didn't make it into the final cut. These environments may be compressed and encrypted into the disc itself? Regardless, it's clear that the conceptual product was larger than the finished project.

Again, by the time III rolls around and you do all the opening stuff again, it feels tedious. Where are the new characters? The amount of people you interact with in the story is very little. IV at least gives you the perspective of your friends back on the mainland, which is interesting.

I think it suffers a lot for the lack of Deadman's Castle which I feel like it's the core of the game.

But I see PIII and PIV as too halves of the same Parallel so it's not that bad

I replayed it yesterday with the most recent version. It has a few problems that some version I used a few years ago didnt have.

In parallel 1, when drizzit enters the main gate(and when the guards take evil garian through the same gate in p. 4) it will freeze for maybe over a minute. In some battles, when you knock down enemies right in the corner of the battefield you'll get the same kind of freeze so try to avoid that. The game also stops for a few second when the warden takes garian to the carbon room in parallel 3.

If you end up playing the game and using an earlier version that doesn't have this issues let me know.

I've just started replaying this for the first time in ages so I'm going mostly off of what's been said in the thread so take this with a grain of salt- From the game's manual:

>PARALLELS IN SPACE AND TIME
>Garian starts his adventure on board the Seabandits, accompanying Bilan to Jailer's island. Or does he?

>He wakes up from a terrible dream to find that he is in possession of a blue rose, a rose which only grows on Jailer's Island.

>He has vague memories of a battle... and a mysterious woman. Strange events are taking place on Jailer's island and the power that exists there is affecting the space-time continuum, causing reality to change.

>FROM REALITY TO A NIGHTMARE
>(...) Upon reaching Jailer's island, Garian is drawn into a web of events which are as mysterious as they are world-shattering in importance. (...)

Two options:

Mentions of events of "world-shattering" importance and stuff "affecting the Space-time continuum" support the notion someone else presented that some event has precipitated several different dimensions on top of one another and, like anon says, they're fighting to determine which one remains as "real".

The other option, which ordinarily wouldn't involve anything earth-shattering or space-time continuum mumbo jumbo and thus seems disproved by the manual itself (reminder that something might've gotten lost in translation, after all) pertains to Garian alone. The hints are both above and in the intro/seabandits. There are two dock workers who comment that on capturing Bilan, one of the hunters was killed by another hunter. Musashi says picrelated. You don't know at this point, but assume later on that you killed your partner after he'd fallen prey to Bilan, same as you do with Musashi. (cont.)

>> No.2045523

>>2045510
But what if you didn't? Consider the blue rose ("which only grows on Jailer's Island") in your journal. Consider that, according to the manual, the hunters have to draw straws to decide who'll accompany Bilan and despite Nick & Roland getting shafted, Garian goes along (game intro) with them anyway, to the protests of the other hunters.

The point? You're having the nightmares consequence of being frozen in carbonite, not because "Garian" killed a child, which only happens in a single parallel (??). You're having them because you're the villain. AKA Bilan.

To recap- Bilan kills Garian; gets captured; gets sent to the prison and frozen in carbonite; has nightmares where he takes the form of his final victim and hunts himself forever.

There's an obvious plot hole in there somewhere but, as I said, I haven't played this in years.

I don't know japanese but I've listened to the Parallel III dramatisation anyway. It does cover the history of parallel IV aswell.
Some noteworthy tidbits I was able to get from the context:
- Kay knowing Bruno and Drizzit and talking about Bilanium-related stuff
- Garian meets Kay in the bar
- In Death Valley Garian is having trouble fighting BIOS monsters and Kay shows up to fight alongside him.
- Garian rescues Tracy
- The Warden's guards are terrified of Debose
- After being released, Sean and Meg sound like batshit deranged psychopaths and they massacre the Warden's guards
- Kay is being held by Sean and after he is killed the two sisters reunite
- Garian fights and defeats Bilan before killing Meg
- When the island is falling apart and the battle vs Carbon Garian is about to happen, Garian sends Jack to go with Kay and Tracy.
While the battle is supposed to be taking place, it cuts right to Jack talking to Kay and Tracy, probably something about how they have to escape. When they are waiting for Garian, he(or is it Carbon Garian???) shows up and talks very calm and collected to Kay. She seems surprised and caught of guard. Garian(or Carbon Garian???) gets on the sub and leaves. It sounds like Jack is also confused and he stays with Kay/Tracy. Kay seems sad and astonished. It then cuts to Garian(Carbon Garian???) sounding really confident/sly saying a short phrase to himself and ends right there.

FFS I never wanted to know japanese this
bad until now. There's gotta be someone out there interested in this game who's able to translate this shit for us.

You know what? I had an audio file from that cd that I downloaded while searching for the ost online years back. It was about Bilan's origins and was spoken in some non-Japanese language where they called it "Bilano". It is and your explanation's a lot more sensible. Plus I'm certain there's an obvious bit of info that disproves this that I'm missing because I can't remember. Maybe, for instance, that if it were true, every time you restart after having completed a parallel, you should do so at the intro (since that is the start of the nightmare because Garian is in it and he wouldn't if he were dead (although him never responding to his companions is a bit weird)) except you do so on the ship IIRC.

Ryu-ya (Garian in japan), Bilan are correct, the ship is called Sea Bandit(s) and the remaining 2 characters' names are unknown to me, but by the conversation appear to be the japan versions of Nick and Roland, the 2 who are set to deliver Bilan to jailor's island. The name of where the boat is anchored, I dunno.

Curious thing this, seems to indicate that Garian had nothing to do with capturing Bilan in the first place, and that delivering him to the island was something he decided when he was prevented from committing a crime by Kay, hence the rose. So Garian and booze really don't mix.

Get SSF, and download an ISO of the game.

Download the region-free BIOS files and put them in the corresponding folders for SSF.

Mount the ISO with Daemon Tools Lite.

Set the mounted drive as the drive SSF reads games from. You should be able to go from there.

I half agree with the "not bad for its time" but in comparison to most any 2D game, Landstalker included, Dark Savior is pretty lousy in the looks. The sprites zoom in and get pretty pixelated, and the polygons crunch and warp when there are too many of them at once.

The CG itself is passable, but nothing to write home about!

Wow, a topic about Dark Savior that's currently running! And right when I just started playing this game again! I'm so glad I now have a computer that's capable of running SSF emulator~

I have lots of fond memories of this game. Back when I was a teenager and a Saturn fanboy, I bought this game and found it pretty fun. It's not the greatest game out there and it has it flaws, but for a 32-bit game it sure had some awesome music and graphics. I actually liked that it had 2D sprites rather than 3D polygonal characters running around. I'll admit the combat system was nothing to write home about but the fact you could capture enemies to use as playable characters in future battles did spice things up a bit.

I also liked the whole concept of different parallels and even the parallels themselves had alternating paths depending on the different decisions you took throughout each playthrough. It makes me happy that I can play this game with save states this time as it'll make it easier to re-explore this game.

I'm just now finding out about all the content that was censored from the Western release and I have to say it's pretty surprising to see what we missed out on. The chocolate bars were really cigarettes, the "jalapeno juice" was really booze, the magazines were full of porn, and JJ's "cheerleaders" were really playboy bunnies. I really hope someone can make a hack of Dark Savior that restores all the censored stuff, or a fan translation of the Japanese version.

When I played this game when I was younger, I never understood that scene where Garian starts weirding out and nearly attacks the kid. Not once did I ever think it had anything to do with the drink he had earlier. Now I understand, it all makes sense now.

Okay, so far from what I've played there's one part where it kinda messes up: in the scene early in Parallel 1 where you see Drizzit-Bilan march into the prison gate when Garian tries to chase after him, it kinda semi-freezes. I'm talking each frame taking 10-15 seconds to progress and you'd have to wait 2-3 minutes for the whole sequence to finish. Older versions of SSF (or at least whatever was current in 2009) will have no problems though: there's an LP by UnPlayedAThing made back in 2009 that runs the game in SSF with no problems.

Not him but that's from a british magazine called Mean Machines Sega. That one is from issue 40 (p26/27) and they also did a preview on issue 43 (p34) and a review on issue 52 (p36).

Off the top of my head there were three british Sega magazines at the time other than Mean Machines; Saturn Power (formerly Sega Power), Sega Pro (?!) and the official Saturn magazine. I'm assuming (since I don't own all of the issues and haven't read the ones I own in ages) most or all of them would have something on DS. I wouldn't expect to find more art on it than you can't find in an official source, either a japanese guide or something of the sort. This picture in particular comes to mind. >>2104112

Good thing about archive though, if you're interested, is that it has text only versions of the pdfs meaning you can set up a google search like this:
>site:archive.org dark savior magazine
and get a ton of hits, all of which are of magazines where the game is mentioned at some point. Most will be rating lists or cheats/guides even but you can check the text on whether or not it's a preview/review and then see it in detail. In fact, I meant to post a couple of pics of the official Saturn mag preview but the scan was so low quality I didn't bother.

You can rotate the camera all over the place (NiGHTS 3D pad may or may not be required, can't remember) although it doesn't necessarily make it easier. It's really cool though. Personally I think a ton of the game's appeal comes from the aesthetics of these little 3D diorama type environments.
