Whenever there's talk of Landstalker (and Alundra) a lot of people bring up and discuss this game. It's about time it gets it's own thread.Your thoughts on it? Some regard it has an hidden gem others consider it unplayable. What did you like/didn't like about it?Discuss
GOAT theme coming through:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDSe7I_T03Y
it's a clusterfuck of interesting ideas and poor execution
>>2032552>Whenever there's talk of Landstalker (and Alundra) a lot of people bring up and discuss this game. Are you retarded? Talking about Landstalker and Dark Savior in the same thread is legit. Bringing Alundra into it is not. You should be making an Alundra thread instead.
Does it have the "isometric view making platforming 10x harder" thing that Landstalker has? I've been meaning to try it for ages, keep forgetting to do so
>>2032595I know that DS is the official spiritual successor to Landstalker but Alundra ends up being more similar to it anyway
>>2032603>Does it have the "isometric view making platforming 10x harder" thing that Landstalker has?yes but not to the excruciating degree of landstalker. and it controls better
I like the theory posted on the other thread>garian talks about dreams a lot throughout the whole game but if you pay attention to one part of the dialogue it says something like: "it is said that whoever gets carbon frozen will forever endure endless nightmares. it's a fate worse than death">now if you think about how the game is structured it's just and endless loop. everytime after the credits roll you "wake up" from a nightmare in the ship and the game rolls all over again.
Friendly reminder that if you fight Carbon Garian with a captured monster instead of using Garian you're the ultimate scrub
>>2032605>Alundra ends up being more similar to it anywayNo it doesn't. Alundra isn't even isometric.
>>2032595it deserves its own threadplus it becomes annoying when people who just want to talk about landstalker have their threads filled with dark savior discussion
>>2032625There really wasn't much Dark Savior discussion at all. And it's even more ridiculous that the OP implies that talking Alundra is okay in Landstalker threads but somehow talking about a game that's made by the same team and creator is somehow worse. Fucking stupid.
Postan superior LP for those who don't want to get their mitts dirty. Not into the things myself, but this dude does his homework and gives a lot of related info. And the late night radio host voice helps.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuGEnYyPKOs
>>2032639kay has the worst anime hair ever
>>2032638Are you retarded or can't you just read? All OP says is that every time there's a Landstalker or Alundra thread somebody brings up DS and so he gave it its own thread. What's the fucking problem?
>>2032649No one ever brings this up in Alundra threads. Not even once. Try again.
>>2032639I watched that LP a few years ago and thorougly enjoyed
>>2032652Damn, someone call the cops! So there's nothing wrong with you, you're just desperate for attention. Alrighty then.
Been a while since I played it but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was and the isometric view actually works well for once
>>2032552it tried to be an rpg, platformer and fighter at the same time and failed in every regard
Did you fags knew that in Dark Savior, Evilsizer (the dude with a faceless white mask and an axe) has the hockey mask of Jason from Friday the 13th in the japanese version? They blanked it in the international version to avoid copyright issues.
>>2032647>be a ninja>wear neon blue
>>2032639God I love Let's Plays of this quality.Dark Savior had similar graphics to Grandia, which made me interested in it, but watching a lot of gameplay footage it just doesn't look that fun to me.
I really enjoyed Dark Saviour. It had almost no gameplay but it was as atmospheric as fuck. There was a real feeling of doom on that prison island and a certain mysterious quality about the storyline that I liked. Like stumbling across the massive skeleton of some giant prisoner. And the aforementioned theory that it could all be a dream. It was also one of the games where I got personally invested in the MCs fate. Like, I really wanted Garian to succeed and get a happy ending.
>>2032762>Like, I really wanted Garian to succeed and get a happy ending.too bad tho

>>2032757>but watching a lot of gameplay footage it just doesn't look that fun to me.come on dudejust the fact that battles arent turn based jrpg crap is enough reason to give it a try
Worth playing Landstalker first before Dark Savior?
>>2032849The story/universe are completly unrelated. They are similar for their isometric perspective and in terms of platforming mechanics.Landstalker is really long, difficult and it feels archaic in some regards so it might turn you off depending on what kind of gaming experience you're looking for.If you are into really old school rpgs/platformers, by all means go for it but if you just intend to play it for the sake of setting you up for Dark Savior feel free to pass it.
>>2032849They are both good games but Dark Savior is hardly a sequel. More like a spiritual successor.
anyone remembers the rumors about a 6th parallel where jack turned out to be the ultimate villain?
Are people aware of the multiplayer mode in Parallel V?
>>2033249Tell me more.
>>2033334After you beat it the first time, once you play it again and if you have a 2nd controller pluged, player 2 can play as the enemy characters. You get to play as Bilan wich is neat since he cant be captured during normal play.
>>2032563I really feel this.I like a lot about the game, but some of the challenges feel a bit arbitrary, some things are completely underwhelming (like those grand total of 7 enemies you encounter in non-battle, like those bats), and the combat is pretty lousy with an under-utilized capture mechanic.I like the game's story, as this anon said >>2032762The world-building in the game, despite being in a singular small location, felt very fleshed out. I like how many things are only sort of cryptically hinted at. And while I don't think the game is a case of "it was only a nightmare" I think it's trying to deal with the clusterfuck of parallel universes (in the usual problematic way). I think that Parallel 4 is the real final ending. It all has to do with Bilan since he is an actual evil entity, and the cosmic event of the comet means that some bad supernatural shit had to go down.Evil Garian is a caricature of Garian, and I still think it's stupid that the game hinges around Jalapeno Juice!
Kay's stupid hair is why I'm glad she melted in parallel 1.
>>2033507yeah fucking bitchi giggled at the dialogue at the end of parallel 4Jack: Why didnt you go with the ninja woman?Garian: I still wonder that myself. I was sure tempted.Jack: Tempted but?Garian: The life I chose was the life without the ninja woman.Jack: You liar! I think you liked her sister a lot more. Am I right?Garian: How did you know?
Parallel 3+4 was clearly rushed . Such a shame.
Alien 3: Alien gets inside a prison and wreaks havocDark Savior: Alien gets inside a prison and wreaks havoccoincidence?
>>2032762>year of our lord 2014>still mispelling the titlehappens everytime someone brings up this game
>>2033554Shinya Nishigaki, producer/mapper/writer on this game, was real big into horror movies before he died. That's one reason you see these influences in the game's plot(s), and that would continue with Blue Stinger and Illbleed.

>>2033538You forget the biggest goofball line:"If only I hadn't drank the Jalapeno Juice..."What a way to end the game. >>2033547Yeah. I think they wanted to do more with the game but didn't have time. It was never even really clear what the Dark Savior was, or supposed to do. And why it had anything to do with Garian. In a sense I think their storytelling and budget were far more mature and accomplished in Alundra (but the story might be WD's doing as well - though both Dark Savior and Alundra are plenty serious with doses of humor).>>2033583Whoa, he wrote Blue Stinger and Illbleed? That's really cool; I love those games. They're almost western in how referential they were to US pop culture.
>>2033631>Jalapeno Juiceeven as a kid i didnt buy itit made a lot more sense when i found out that it was booze and that chocolate were cigarettes in the japanese version

>bruno is refered in parallel V as the master swordsman>he doesnt even have a sword in gameIf you take a look at his artwork you can see him carrying sword. Could someone perhaps translate this in hopes that we get a little more backstory on this unused idea?
>>2033676I always loled when drizzit tells that guard on the skeletal horse that he will get him more scary magazines and the guy starts giggling telling him how much he loves them
>>2032552I really enjoyed Dark Savior, especially the multiple paths that assured you would play the game several times to see everything. I thought the battle system was great too. I can see how isometric view action rpgs are not for everyone, some people just can't get past the look or have difficulty jumping.
>>2034321I leave him because it's less work and I like being able to play as bruno. He was gonna die anyway so why bother.

>>2035164Has anyone gone so far as do more be fucking to giving birted of Godzilla?
>>2032620I'm not sure how that matters. The isometric view stuff in Landstalker was pretty much taken as far as it could go to the point that anymore would be pretty annoying. Even if it wasn't Super Mario RPG does a good job of bearing the rest of the load.Alundra is a successor to Landstalker in every way that matters (aesthetic, puzzles, better action, more interesting plot, better overworld)
>>2032553I dont remember it being so "orchestral" in game. Is this the original or a remix?
>>2035642>>2035169English isnt my first language did I do that bad?I meant to ask about what kind of abomination did she have sex with to impregnate her with that kaiju prisioner.
>>2035735remix. As far as I know Dark Savior doesn't have redbook audio either, so no easy rip. The channel that hosts that video has mediafire links on his/her page for the OST though.>>2035694Exactly. Alundra is far closer to Landstalker than Dark Savior. Dark Savior controls decently enough, but is really not much like Landstalker otherwise. It has a real mess of ideas trying to fight to fit into one game, not unlike multiple Garians fighting to fit into one parallel.
>>2035735It is remixed but it's an official CD released to go with the game.
Started playing this game thanks to this thread (stopped reading it to avoid spoilers). So far so good. Worked hard to save lizardman but the fucker died anyway. Im assuming him and the girl who fell in the tank will be alive in other parallels? As for gameplay related questions:Can all enemies be captured and if not is there any way to know which are and which arent? Can you still capture while you use a captured monster? Is there anyway to equip Garian's weapons on captured monsters?
>>2035890All enemies with the exception of Bilan can be captured, iirc. You can use anyone to capture any monster - you just have to use a charge attack when the monster has the flashing "capture chance" or whatever over them. This can be tricky to pull off - I only managed to capture a few in my playthroughs. If it is too hard you can basically brute-force it as Garian without too much trouble. As for your plot question, you'll have to find out eh? =)
>>2034867I translated something from a previous DS thread. I've still yet to play it, so I have no idea about the context, but giving it my best shot:>-Rigoate>Jailers-bird(tori) group, boss of a secret prisoner organization. In order to escape their living hell, Jailers-bird collectively plan a terrorist plot. Once (he) has been sentenced to imprisonment by the big boss of the Carbon Organization, (he) is in a frenzy to the rescue the DeBoss (DeVos?). Then, Bilan landed.
>>2036043I guess "localized" it would be:BrunoJailbird group, leader of the Jailbird Liberation Organization. The JLO organize a rebellion to escape their hellish fate. Once he has been sentenced by Warden Kurtliegen, he begins to frantically search for DeBose. During these events, Bilan escaped to the island.Sorry>.>Thanks for translating!Though I thought DeBose was a rival to Bruno's group. JJ and DeBose were leading other prisoner groups.
>>2035890>Can all enemies be capturedno. there's about 10 per parallel>and if not is there any way to know which are and which arent?no. you just got to knock them down below 20 HP on the 2nd battle round and see if the "capture chance" shows up>Can you still capture while you use a captured monster?yes>Is there anyway to equip Garian's weapons on captured monsters?no>All enemies with the exception of Bilan can be captured, iirc.nah. there's plenty of others that can't be captured>If it is too hard you can basically brute-force it as Garian without too much trouble.capturing is only crucial during parallel IV because there are barely any weapon upgrades for garian
>>2036043Thank you so much!>>2036073JLO is Jailers Liberation Organization*It's seem like Bruno was originally meant to take the role of JJ as the leader of Debose's followers. As you said, in the actual game they each belong to rival groups and Bruno is in search of Alibaba
>>2035694>>2035807Alundra is no way closer to Landstalker than Dark Savior. Unless the only thing you want to look at is character design instead of judging the entire package.

I like the artist. A lot.Post more DS/LS/Alundra art.
>>2037029>There's a few good endings.Parallel II is the only true happy ending. It seems like a lot of people don't get the twist at the very end of parallel IV

>>2036761We already explained that just because Alundra isn't in isometric perspective doesn't stop it thematically for linking up with Landstalker. It has more of the game-feel (dungeons, puzzles, RPG elements) that typified Landstalker. Dark Savior has a few elements of that experience, but it is much more idiosyncratic. Perhaps too much so. But still. >>2036732I wonder if it is a thing lost in translation, or the promo material was released before the actual game. >>2037047In spoilers, which twist are you referring to?I don't buy the whole "it's a carbon nightmare" thing. I think the story ends with the destruction of Jailer's Island. Kind of tragic that everyone on Jailer's Island died to shit, but that's sort of what happened in Parallel 1 anyhow. The place was pretty doomed no matter what.
>>2038004>It has more of the game-feel (dungeons, puzzles, RPG elements) that typified Landstalker.Dark Savior has all of that. Even moreso, it's done in the same style as Landstalker because of the same team and more importantly the same lead designer. It's easy to spot that they were made by the same people. Couple that with the fact that Alundra isn't isometric, and it's easy to see that Dark Savior shares more common elements with Landstalker.
>>2038004SPOILERS BELOWDuring parallel IV you find that various people will talk to you cryptically about the Dark Savior. One of them says that whose world survives(either garian's or carbon garian's) will cause the person to die in the process. After defeating carbon garian, you get to the submarines and find Kay. "Garian" doesnt recognise Kay:Garian: ...Is that you...Kay?Kay: ... Yes ...Garian: I have a message from himKay: Him...? You dont mean...Garian: LETS MEET IN OUR DREAMSKay: What?Garian: He just told me to tell you that*Garian hops on the sub and leaves while Kay stays there staring until Tracy asks her to get on the sub*It was Carbon Garian that escaped the island. Garian's world got saved but he died in the process.
Note: in the main posting form up top, highlighting text and pushing ctrl+S will spoiler it.>>2038054Eh, that's a stretch. What substantiates that?If you save all your friends (who Carbon Garian was trying to kill) you are specifically congratulated for "saving all your friends!" Carbon Garian was trying to drink their blood.Carbon Garian and Carbon Garian's world dies when Garian kills him. I think that's what the quote is referring to.I think it was Garian's awkward way of trying to distance himself from Kay
>>2038069see my picI'm going to bed but we can talk tomorrow
>>2037357>>2037739cool where did you get these?
>>2032552I'm tempted to buy another Saturn (my old one bite the dust, somehow) just to try this game.I've always LOVED Landstalker. Every year, I do a complete run(sometimes more than one). I tried Alundra, but I didn't like it as much. I also hate missable items.Always heard praise about Dark Savior being the spiritual successor, but I have no idea.I enjoyed the fighting of Landstalker. That mummy fight here you have to imagine killing it's shadow, or whatever, has always been weird, but fun. Not to mention all the puzzles below Mercator.
>>2038109They are very different games. You might be disapointed if you're counting on Landstalker 2.0Dark Savior's tone is far more serious and it's hardly a cheerfull adventure exploring the land.similarities:- camera perspective- some platforming elements like button pressing to open doors and floating spike balls- a quirky flying companion- fighting a giant blue dragon in one of the endingsthere are missable itemsthere are no mook enemies. the only battling that occurs is versus specific characters a la fighting game
>>2038131>Dark Savior's tone is far more serious and it's hardly a cheerfull adventure exploring the land.I honestly thought that once you went to Mercator, the game was way less cheerful. Outside of the Duke being an ass.I'm more worried about the fighting system.
>>2038146The entire games takes place in a prison island and almost everyone is hostile>I'm more worried about the fighting systemit's not very well fleshed out but using captured enemies during is fun. I actually like it but it's coming from someone who found the combat in Landstalker atrocious

>>2038951I loved that shit. No one will beat it the first time around, but I found it fun.
>>2038951I've never played this game, but I've yet to experience a game with a bad minecart section.

The ship sequence in the beginning of the game is one of my all-time favorite moments in video games period. What I really love about Dark Savior, and by extension Landstalker, are the settings and situations. The games always have a sort of high adventure feel to them that you experience when you watch a good swashbuckling movie. I'm also a fan of the isometric element present in both, and Climax really managed to give both games fluid controls that make navigation a joy.Dark Savior in particular handles this well, nowadays I can go through Silver Castle at a near constant top speed. It's a lot of fun. The combat system is also interesting, instead of fighting enemies on the map which would probably be clunky at best, they added a fighting game sort of battle system which is simply yet fun since it adds special moves to characters. The capture system is what really sells the system, though it would have been nice if it were a tad easier.
>>2039052The graphics are well done for its era. The 3D can be strange in that Saturn/PS sort of way, but the visual style of the game is very distinct and really makes an interesting setting that vaguely reminiscent of a Buichi Terasawa manga. I'm really glad they decided to use 2D sprites for the characters. Overall, Dark Savior manages to blend action, platforming and puzzles together very well. I like that the game focuses on exploring the island and events, with battles being less frequent but more important. The parallel and story is another thing I really enjoy. The first time I saw Carbon Garian, I shat bricks as the plotlines came together. It was extremely memorable. I didn't get to play this gem when it came out, but I'm glad I found it when I did. It's a pity Climax hasn't done anything quite like Landstalker and Dark Savior in recent times. The Landstalker PSP release could have been a great boon towards making a new title but sadly we'll never get it now. RIP.
Garian doesn't seem to be the brightest bulb around... but I love him anyway.
>>2037038all i got m8i wish i could read moonrunes
>muh storyIf the gameplay is shit it's a shit gamego read a book
>>2039102The game is mostly action platforming gameplay, and it's good. Take your meme arrow tier response back to /v/
Anyone has any idea why they recolored the undead child for the international release? If anything the purple skin and the stuff they added made more scary...
>>2039136They gave him purple skin, pointy ears and an evil expression to make it seem more demonic and less human. In the japanese version you posted you are pretty much attacking an inocent looking child.

>>2039063>>2039052nice review. I agree on 100%
>>2039089I love the skeleton inside bilan's slime detail that sadly doesn't show up ingame

Would some kind anon be good enough to summarise each parallel and each ending please? Spoiler tags. All I remember is one parallel where you fight 10 enemies in a row, which I could never finish, and another long one where the blue chick turns into a statue, or a phoenix or something. That was the "good" ending.
>>2039494I'll try..A hunt for Evil:Garian chases Bilan throughout the entire game. Bilan is always one step ahead and kills everything in his path. Warden Kurtliegan sacrifices himself to help stop Bilan's rampage. Kay falls into the Warden's vat of Bilanium and transforms into a gigantic blue rose. Alibaba, a giant head inside one of the island's castles, gives you the key to defeating Bilan. Inside the ruins you discover the holy sword of Rajeen which allows you to kill a giant mutated Bilan.A hunt for the HeartGarian kills Bilan aboard Seabandits. The plot now revolves around stopping Warden Kurt's plan to use Bilanium to make a super monster and conquer the world. Garian's brother inexplicably winds up on the island, having been Bilan's host on the Seabandits. Kay does not fall into the vat, but Drizzit the inmate does, turning into a hideous polygon monster that wreaks havoc. Garian rescues Kay and the two team up to stop the Warden and rescue Alibaba. Garian joins the JLO, a rebel group of prisoners of whom Drizzit was a member. The JLO allow Garian into their secret tunnels which bring him into the Warden's mansion, where he attempts to steal the diary of Wouda. Going into the ruins again, Kay and Garian discover Kay's sister, also inexplicably on the island. He travels to the three castles on the island, cornering the Warden who has taken Kay and Alibaba hostage. Alibaba is revealed to by Kay's father, and then revealed to be not her father because Kay is the spirit of the Silver Statue that was missing in the Silver Castle. The Warden doesn't really give a shit and takes the rings of gold and copper from Garian. Kay uses an ancient spell to release the power of silver inside her at the cost of her life, giving that power to Garian. Garian shit-kicks the Warden and the spirit of Kay takes out the mutated Drizzit. Kay's spirit returns to life, Drizzit is free from his mutation, and in general is a happy ending.

I found the KKK! Im surprised they censor this
>>2039849Im surprised they **didnt** censor this
>>2038092This makes no sense. Then why would Carbon Garian even give a shit about winning the fight? This is what is so frustrating about parallel 3 and 4. For all the cryptic dialog in the game hinting at larger things going on, these two rushed parallels don't wrap up the game at all.
>>2039954I think you're missing some details. You'd have to really look at all the dialog to see if there's actual inconsistencies. Plus you have to take into translation errors, as was common back in those days.
what was the point of this bilanium on gold castle?
Imo the "it's all carbon garian's endless nightmares" it's the best theoryI need to replay this game soon

>>2039849I guess that "the daughters were depicted along with their favorite animal" is translation/censorship bullshit. I remember that in one of the murals it's basicly the hooved beast charging against the girl. And what kind of girl has a scarab as their favorite animal?
>>2039964If Carbon Garian really wanted to trick Garian into killing him, why didn't he bait him right away and get killed? The guy is so opposite Garian, he even has a goofy laugh "kukukuku" and a snidely "I'll kill anyone who gets in my way!"An awful lot of running around causing shit when it would have been easier to trick Garian aka the not-the-sharpest-tool-in-the-shed into beating the shit out of him. "Hey Garian I am actually Bilan!""What? Oh noes!"Why did all of Carbon's hard-gay thugs try and kill you to help out Carbon?Even Indigo, who throws out that quote, tries to kill you. Obviously these guys all want the "Dark Savior" to appear (a thing that is never explained), so you'd think they'd be invested in seeing this outcome happen.Indigo, Musashi, these guys are all so full of shit.I think Garian's line at the end is him remembering his parallels 1 and 2 (which technically "didn't happen" for him (he doesn't remember their events except only as dreams) and calling out to that. Just my thoughts.>>2039975I was thinking about that, but the bad ending of Parallel 2 complicates this. It states that a Bilan-doppleganger Tracy goes to the mainland with an army of Bilans and wipes out humanity. Obviously there are real stakes involved outside of Jalapeno Juice, to drink or not to drink (But thou must).
>>2040014>to drink or not to drink (But thou must)this shit is so fucking annoying. if drinking it is an integral part of the story why even have the >no option>jrpg logic
Olivia is a strong independant women who dont need no manWhat does she even want Bilanium for?
>>2040054and of course i forget my pic
>>2039494Sorry mate im too lazy to type it all out. If I do a quick summary it will feel like I left a ton out and to do it properly it would take way too longBut if you have any specific questions feel free to ask
>>2040014I always assumed that carbon Garian was the Dark Savior due to everyone calling you a copy/false dark savior. I also don't think they're saying Carbon Garian wanted to trick Garian into killing him, I think it's Carbon Garian won the fight and was who you were playing as in the final fight, and he wanted to win simply for the sake of self preservation, regardless of which world was destroyed. this only really works if we assume carbon garian has captures like you though.
>>2039531You are a prince amongst men, "anonymous".Think I remember both of these.
>>2040086Well for a start, I don't remember "Carbon Garian" at all. where the hell does he come into it?
>>2040698Alright. Keep in mind that this part of the game was clearly rushed in development and there are a bunch of different theories and possible plotholes. Here's what we are specificly told:When you arrive the island in every parallel, there's a drunk fellow blocking your pass. He will only allow you to go through if you manage to drink a whole bottle of "jalapeno juice"(it's some sort of booze in the japanese version). Garian is forced to drink it and soon enough starts tripping balls. There's a kid in town there to visit his father that confronts garian since bounty hunters are the reason his father's in jail. Garian is wasted and mistakes the kid for the monster Bilan. In the moment Garian is about to attack him, the ninja women is watching the situation and throws him one of the magical blue roses. In that moment the dimensions split. In one dimension Garian wasnt affected by the rose and therefore kills the child. he is then sentenced to being Carbon Frozen(a la Han Solo), the ultimate punishment reserved for the worst criminals. In the other dimension the rose hits garian's face, causing his scare and allowing him to stop in time before hitting the kid.Now in parallel 3 the prisoners' rebellion organization is planning to awaken their leader that also got carbon frozen. The Warden fears this and teams up with Garian to stop it. Garian and the Warden get to the carbon room too late and all prisoners that got carbon frozen are freed. The Warden gets killed. Among the carbon members was Carbon Garian. Jack the bird then explains that two dimensions that should have never crossed have met and his causing troubles in the space time continuum. Both worlds are fighting for their chance to exist. To increase his chance of existing Carbon Garian and the other carbon members that teamed up with him intend to kill Garian's friends. To increase his chance of existing the Garian sets out to save his friends.

>>2040014>Why did all of Carbon's hard-gay thugs try and kill you to help out Carbon? For Debose I remember that he was sent to jail by Orion. So at least both Debose and Carbon Garian would have an interest on taking him out. Debose says something like "Orion I never had the pleasure of thanking you for sending me to prison" so I guess he could be in it for revenge.

>>2042508I think Garian's dreams are his visions of his other timeline selves. In Parallel 4 he doesn't recognize Kay but has precognition (from remembering his self in parallel 2) that he "knows" her. In the same way that Kay "knows" Garian from her dreams despite never meeting him in 3.Same with Bruno, who says that he saw Garian "in his dreams" before he died in Parallel 3 from Bilan. They remember their other selves only in the context of dreams.

>>2042576Definitely. I and II feel like actual games and complement each other. You see different areas, things take wildly different turns, etc. it's good. The game doles out all of its good will and surprises in these two chapters and really sucks players in.III and IV try to introduce something new and interesting, but they really fail in execution. No new areas, no real new challenges aside from speedrun - they feel so rushed and incomplete. Hell, there's no reason to split up Parallel III and IV, since III is 20 minutes, tops. Despite those parallels actually dealing with "the Dark Savior" they pale in comparison to what comes before it.

There was at max two posters talking about it and even then it might have been the same person due to the posting style. I know at least one of them has been saying the same thing over and over about how he feels about the later parallels ITT (which is probably you). Anyway, III is the good version of parallel I in that not everything goes horribly wrong and Garian discovers the truth of what's going on. That's why it's called a hunt for the lies. Parallel I is the setup of the general story but everything goes to shit. Parallel II focuses on the setting of the island and its inhabitants.
>>2042960>screenshots of stuff that didnt made it into the final gamesweet! got any more? where did you get that?
>>2042962Parallel III, once again, is where Garian finally figures out what's going on and avoids disaster by having premonitions from his dreams (parallel I and II). Basically Parallel III is the "true" parallel. Parallel IV is basically the continuation of III, but it's split up because A) it's a time attack with no saves and B) because storywise the tone drastically changes due to all of information being available and Garian find a new purpose in being on the island. Also, you keep saying there are a bunch of plot holes and coming up with crazy theories but you're just plain wrong about basically everything. The game lays down the story clearly if you pay attention. I'm pretty sure you're the same guy who complains about Dark Savior being in Landstalker threads but thinks that it's alright to talk about Alundra in Landstalker threads (and that it's somehow closer to Landstalker than Dark Savior kek)
>I don't like parallel III and IV>this means they were clearly rushed!Fucking stupid
>>2042967I was just sort of searching for official art, and found it. Some neat stuff. >>2042962Eh, Parallel III is too short to be a "good" version of I. I has sort of a nice bleak feeling to it that very much leads to catharsis when everything goes well in Parallel II. III is a bit of a weird retread that leads to the stop-watch challenge of IV.
>>2042981> Parallel III is too short to be a "good" version of I.You say some dumb shit sometimes
>>2042976I explained up above that they feel incomplete. Length-wise they are nowhere near as involved as I and II. You do not see any new areas and solve puzzles that you had basically just solved one parallel earlier. That in itself is not exciting. The story does not feel as fleshed out, because it has no room to explore or explain anything. This can be forgiven in the case of IV since it's supposed to be "wrapping things up." But III feels barren and practically lifeless. If had taken you on a completely different journey to reach the same conclusion, then I would have been much happier with it.

If you actually judge P3 separate from P4 they are even shittier. On parallel 3 there are 5 battles. you can only capture 2 characters and the final battle its fucking JJ
>>2042992reasonable complaints are different than "shitting on" the game. All of those posts are pretty mild. They are the weakest parts of the game, from a mechanical perspective (not offering new challenges to the player), and plotwise they stumble with a lot of vague and cryptic events. And you *have* to be the same guy if you are saying that the complaints about a legitimately stupid part of the game, ie the minecart ride, are pointless bitching.
>>2042990Your posts are basically just stating your opinions as fact or other nonsensical shit. There's literally no substance. >I think it feels incomplete so it is>The story isn't as fleshed out because you can't explore (wut)>You do the same things in I and II but III feels barren and lifeless despite contradicting my earlier statement>III is too short to be a good version of I (wut again)>>2043000Oh, here's a gem>III is shitty because not enough battles>>2043001That wasn't me pointing out those posts, but I would like to point out that 90% of those posts are yours.

These environments may be compressed and encrypted into the disc itself? Regardless, it's clear that the conceptual product was larger than the finished project. Again, by the time III rolls around and you do all the opening stuff again, it feels tedious. Where are the new characters? The amount of people you interact with in the story is very little. IV at least gives you the perspective of your friends back on the mainland, which is interesting.
>>2043007I think it suffers a lot for the lack of Deadman's Castle which I feel like it's the core of the game. But I see PIII and PIV as too halves of the same Parallel so it's not that badI would have like the whole Dark Savior/Dark Messiah stuff to be explained a little bit better

Goddamn, this thread is making me want to replay this really badly. Time to locate a decent rip. Also, if anyone's emulating this, mind saying what version of SSF you're using?>>2044767>>2044782See >>2039045 Watching Un suffer through it is strangely cathartic.
>>2045329I replayed it yesterday with the most recent version. It has a few problems that some version I used a few years ago didnt have.In parallel 1, when drizzit enters the main gate(and when the guards take evil garian through the same gate in p. 4) it will freeze for maybe over a minute. In some battles, when you knock down enemies right in the corner of the battefield you'll get the same kind of freeze so try to avoid that. The game also stops for a few second when the warden takes garian to the carbon room in parallel 3.If you end up playing the game and using an earlier version that doesn't have this issues let me know.
>>2045349The only one I've tried so far is 008_alpha_R2 which seems to have some sound issues during the intro (sound is really raspy, like it's playing through very cheap speakers) and during the seabandits part (music seems to accelerate/decelerate at random). Will report back.
>>2045349>>2045359This site (http://evilboris.sonic-cult.net/SSF/#pald) seems to recommend 009_alpha_R1 with no notes (problems). Will try it out and advise. Here's the SSF repository if anyone else is interested- http://www.geocities.jp/mj3kj8o5/ssf/files/index.html
>>2045368thanks for the info
Right, so after trying a handful of versions of SSF I have to say they all suffer from the same predicaments, mainly low quality sound with some artifacts and a botched sound test screen. The only version I noticed seemed to play the music at the correct tempo is 012_beta which is what I'd recommend and what I'll be using. No issues with playability (at the start, at least) or with video playback. If anyone has a recommendation, feel free to say so. Save files are interchangeable between SSF versions IIRC.
Ominous Musashi is ominous.
>>2045405I had no sound issues with with various older versions. Are you using the BIOS? or it might be your rom?
>>2045416It kind of reinforces >>2041097 since in parallel 2 and 4 Garian does escape the island.
>>2045418I have 2 roms, both Euro rips (both with the same issues) and am using no bios. You reckon either of these is an issue?
>>2045443to be sure i would have used the bios. if it's just a minor issue just it's not much to worry about
>>2045430I've just started replaying this for the first time in ages so I'm going mostly off of what's been said in the thread so take this with a grain of salt- From the game's manual:>PARALLELS IN SPACE AND TIME>Garian starts his adventure on board the Seabandits, accompanying Bilan to Jailer's island. Or does he?>He wakes up from a terrible dream to find that he is in possession of a blue rose, a rose which only grows on Jailer's Island.>He has vague memories of a battle... and a mysterious woman. Strange events are taking place on Jailer's island and the power that exists there is affecting the space-time continuum, causing reality to change.>FROM REALITY TO A NIGHTMARE>(...) Upon reaching Jailer's island, Garian is drawn into a web of events which are as mysterious as they are world-shattering in importance. (...)Two options: Mentions of events of "world-shattering" importance and stuff "affecting the Space-time continuum" support the notion someone else presented that some event has precipitated several different dimensions on top of one another and, like anon says, they're fighting to determine which one remains as "real".The other option, which ordinarily wouldn't involve anything earth-shattering or space-time continuum mumbo jumbo and thus seems disproved by the manual itself (reminder that something might've gotten lost in translation, after all) pertains to Garian alone. The hints are both above and in the intro/seabandits. There are two dock workers who comment that on capturing Bilan, one of the hunters was killed by another hunter. Musashi says picrelated. You don't know at this point, but assume later on that you killed your partner after he'd fallen prey to Bilan, same as you do with Musashi. (cont.)
>>2045510But what if you didn't? Consider the blue rose ("which only grows on Jailer's Island") in your journal. Consider that, according to the manual, the hunters have to draw straws to decide who'll accompany Bilan and despite Nick & Roland getting shafted, Garian goes along (game intro) with them anyway, to the protests of the other hunters. The point? You're having the nightmares consequence of being frozen in carbonite, not because "Garian" killed a child, which only happens in a single parallel (??). You're having them because you're the villain. AKA Bilan. To recap- Bilan kills Garian; gets captured; gets sent to the prison and frozen in carbonite; has nightmares where he takes the form of his final victim and hunts himself forever. There's an obvious plot hole in there somewhere but, as I said, I haven't played this in years.
>>2045523>the form of his final victim**the only one to survive the massacre in the ship, convenient, huh?
>>2045510>>2045523that sounds reeeally far fetched. Garian is that decided to escort bilan himself precisely because he blames himself for the death of his companion that he was forced to kill thanks to Bilan
I don't know japanese but I've listened to the Parallel III dramatisation anyway. It does cover the history of parallel IV aswell. Some noteworthy tidbits I was able to get from the context:- Kay knowing Bruno and Drizzit and talking about Bilanium-related stuff- Garian meets Kay in the bar- In Death Valley Garian is having trouble fighting BIOS monsters and Kay shows up to fight alongside him.- Garian rescues Tracy- The Warden's guards are terrified of Debose- After being released, Sean and Meg sound like batshit deranged psychopaths and they massacre the Warden's guards- Kay is being held by Sean and after he is killed the two sisters reunite- Garian fights and defeats Bilan before killing Meg- When the island is falling apart and the battle vs Carbon Garian is about to happen, Garian sends Jack to go with Kay and Tracy. While the battle is supposed to be taking place, it cuts right to Jack talking to Kay and Tracy, probably something about how they have to escape. When they are waiting for Garian, he(or is it Carbon Garian???) shows up and talks very calm and collected to Kay. She seems surprised and caught of guard. Garian(or Carbon Garian???) gets on the sub and leaves. It sounds like Jack is also confused and he stays with Kay/Tracy. Kay seems sad and astonished. It then cuts to Garian(Carbon Garian???) sounding really confident/sly saying a short phrase to himself and ends right there.FFS I never wanted to know japanese thisbad until now. There's gotta be someone out there interested in this game who's able to translate this shit for us.
>>2043501>You know, since one of the cds of the dark savior sound factory is a radio drama of the events of parallel 3, I wonder if that sheds light on any unexplained story details. Probably not, but hey.You know what? I had an audio file from that cd that I downloaded while searching for the ost online years back. It was about Bilan's origins and was spoken in some non-Japanese language where they called it "Bilano". I don't know what happened to that file after all these years and I'm kicking myself for losing it.
>>2045539It is and your explanation's a lot more sensible. Plus I'm certain there's an obvious bit of info that disproves this that I'm missing because I can't remember. Maybe, for instance, that if it were true, every time you restart after having completed a parallel, you should do so at the intro (since that is the start of the nightmare because Garian is in it and he wouldn't if he were dead (although him never responding to his companions is a bit weird)) except you do so on the ship IIRC.This >>2040782 still makes the most sense to me.
>>2045551That might be the ingame voice clips used in the Lavian Ruins. It was in English and they called Bilan "Bilano." You hear it all in Parallel I; it's sort of strange since it's the only time the game has voice acting. >>2045546Who knows if it is just a rewrite of III and IV or something more. At least as consolation, that could probably only be used as a supplemental argument to learn about the game as opposed to something concrete or gospel. Ha ha, someone should send a message to Kan Naito or Toshio Terada demanding an explanation!"The western fans of your game, Daku Seiba are dying to know ... "
1. I learned I suck at listening Japanese. If I were faster I would have done a lot more.2. Sorry If the English isn't that natural, I'm not native.3. The trips is if I keep translating the other ones4. Sorry, I translated just the first one, I will continue if there's interest. If it's transcribed somewhere that would help a LOT. >>2045743>The names were a pain in the ass. So help me there, please.Ryu-ya (Garian in japan), Bilan are correct, the ship is called Sea Bandit(s) and the remaining 2 characters' names are unknown to me, but by the conversation appear to be the japan versions of Nick and Roland, the 2 who are set to deliver Bilan to jailor's island. The name of where the boat is anchored, I dunno.Curious thing this, seems to indicate that Garian had nothing to do with capturing Bilan in the first place, and that delivering him to the island was something he decided when he was prevented from committing a crime by Kay, hence the rose. So Garian and booze really don't mix.

>>2046228While I enjoy getting some of the flavor detail from the cd, I suspect that it would not reveal some earth-shattering new element of the plot that was never brought up in the game itself. However, This is not to deter the excellent work of the anon who translated the first bit. At the very least, it clarifies some things that are more vaguely mentioned in the story itself. I am half of mind to ask his permission to take his raw translated text and clean it up grammatically for wider consumption. With his permission/credit of course.
>>2046891>I am half of mind to ask his permission to take his raw translated text and clean it up grammatically for wider consumption. With his permission/credit of course.Of course, you would help me a lot, thanks. When everything is translated, I will proof-read the translation again, of course.I didn't have too much time today (So just the first 5 minutes of the second track, sorry), I'm very slow with this but I plan to do all the disk. I was searching, and listened again and again, for almost half an hour for a word that resulted to be "Balinium".lol, I should have searched in the walk-through first. Also, NORIO FUCKING WAKOMOTO is Kurtliegen.http://pastebin.com/0nNhLkGp

I had this on Saturn, apart from the Cart part, there's a couple trick jumps in the 4rth(?) parallel where you are on floating platforms and spikes everywhere that's insanely difficult. It made me rage quit and sell the game, then played it and finished it years later on emulator, wish I hadn't sold it, but.

Wow, a topic about Dark Savior that's currently running! And right when I just started playing this game again! I'm so glad I now have a computer that's capable of running SSF emulator~I have lots of fond memories of this game. Back when I was a teenager and a Saturn fanboy, I bought this game and found it pretty fun. It's not the greatest game out there and it has it flaws, but for a 32-bit game it sure had some awesome music and graphics. I actually liked that it had 2D sprites rather than 3D polygonal characters running around. I'll admit the combat system was nothing to write home about but the fact you could capture enemies to use as playable characters in future battles did spice things up a bit.I also liked the whole concept of different parallels and even the parallels themselves had alternating paths depending on the different decisions you took throughout each playthrough. It makes me happy that I can play this game with save states this time as it'll make it easier to re-explore this game.I'm just now finding out about all the content that was censored from the Western release and I have to say it's pretty surprising to see what we missed out on. The chocolate bars were really cigarettes, the "jalapeno juice" was really booze, the magazines were full of porn, and JJ's "cheerleaders" were really playboy bunnies. I really hope someone can make a hack of Dark Savior that restores all the censored stuff, or a fan translation of the Japanese version.>>2040782When I played this game when I was younger, I never understood that scene where Garian starts weirding out and nearly attacks the kid. I'll have to give this game another try.I remember rage quitting fairly early on because I died at some random miniboss after a long and annoying platforming section because I didn't quite have a hang of the battle system. It didn't help that fights were so rare and that save points were miles apart (I was playing on a modded Saturn, so no savescumming here)

>>2105574>Am I the only one here who supports Garian x Kay?yes. kay was a cunt who deserved to be anally raped by bilan in parallel 1
>>2106697Okay, so far from what I've played there's one part where it kinda messes up: in the scene early in Parallel 1 where you see Drizzit-Bilan march into the prison gate when Garian tries to chase after him, it kinda semi-freezes. I'm talking each frame taking 10-15 seconds to progress and you'd have to wait 2-3 minutes for the whole sequence to finish. Older versions of SSF (or at least whatever was current in 2009) will have no problems though: there's an LP by UnPlayedAThing made back in 2009 that runs the game in SSF with no problems.

Most will be rating lists or cheats/guides even but you can check the text on whether or not it's a preview/review and then see it in detail. I played this as a kid, still didn't understand English, but I did manage to beat it, I think.(If the ending is in a tall tower, in a greenish zone and you fight the green viscous dude, I mean)Is SS emulatable yet? I would play this again out of nostalgia. I loved the world.
>>2139271>(If the ending is in a tall tower, in a greenish zone and you fight the green viscous dude, I mean)you played about a third of the game. I did the same when I didnt knew english>Is SS emulatable yet? I would play this again out of nostalgia. I loved the world.Yes. there might be one or two hiccups depending on which version you use but it's fully playable.

>>2143453it should make you happy since you get hipster cred for knowing and liking it
>>2145709Whatever you say bro
>>2145709that or you just get acused of nostalgiafagging because your childhood game isnt as good as you think
>>2032603You can rotate the camera all over the place (NiGHTS 3D pad may or may not be required, can't remember) although it doesn't necessarily make it easier. It's really cool though. Personally I think a ton of the game's appeal comes from the aesthetics of these little 3D diorama type environments.
>>2145709>>2147972Can't you say something that's not shitposting? Are you incapable of normal conversation?
