Is it time to stop pretending that the sms is a good system ? There's a few gems but the majority of games are just severely downgraded arcade/megadrive ports, pretty much all of the european exclusives are shitty US gold conversions ,zillion can't hold a candle to metroid ,golden axe warrior is no zelda killer, the brazilian tectoy games weren't very good either though I applaud their efforts,it's just a system I've always wanted to like because it's sega but I've yet to find more than maybe 5 games I enjoy,it's not even in the same league as the nes and there's no way that can be debated.

Thoughts?

I don't know, OP. I liked the NES better but there were plenty of good SMS games.
Also, I'll take the SMS Shinobi, Fantasy Zone, Space Harrier, Choplifter, and Ghostbusters, over the NES versions any day.

Wonderboy in Monster Land
Shinobi
Golvellius

now yes it certainly doesn't have as many good games as the NES but the games it does have are very good too. It doesn't have the ratio of bad games the NES has either though since most were programmed by sega themselves and they knew how to code better than micronics or tose.

The SMS Double Dragon fucked up the combat system completely. In the AC and NES versions, you could stun enemies with a couple of punches or a single kick and then follow it up with an uppercut, roundhouse kick or a hair pull. This option was removed in the SMS version, forcing you to rely on hit and run strategies.

It's not on the same league as the NES, true few systems in gaming history can compete with the NES, SNES, or PS2.

It does when every enemy (from the typical Williams and Rowper to Machine Gun Willy) has to be fought the same way. The AC and NES versions both allowed you to mix in your techniques. That's not even mentioning the constant flickering, bland level designs, crappier soundtrack. The only thing the SMS version has going for is the 2P mode.

The best SMS games for me:
- Black Belt
- Ninja Gaiden (this is almost completely different from the NES and Arcade versions)
- Phantasy Star
- Kenseiden (the Master System's Castlevania)
- The Lucky Dime Caper (Donald Duck game)
- Alladdin
- Asterix
- Master of Darkness/Vampire (another Castlevania)
- Castle of Illusion (Mickey Mouse)
- Sagaia
- Shinobi
- Alex Kidd in Miracle World
- E-Swat
- Wonderboy/Monica's Gang games
- Forgotten Worlds
- Fantasy Zone
- Cloud Master

SMS is a good system to be aware of for anyone interested in retro gaming. It's successes are worth celebrating, but they are outshone by the incredible failures, especially at the beginning of the system's lifespan.

I think it's fascinating how they decided to put the marketing of the system in the hands of Tonka. Connecting that up with my early impressions of both systems certainly makes a lot of sense. I still remember the NES demo machine in Woolworth that hooked me the summer of it's release - even at that time the NES library seemed superior. Mostly just smoke and mirrors.

But that's what I mean. Half the charm is seeing whats different and embracing those differences as part of history. You can say, "a bulk of the games are outdated ports", and it might be an accurate statement, but in the land of anonymity does one really want to exclude potentially good games based on someone else's interpretation of what is or isn't worth the time to play? At least playing them provides context as a matter of personal experience as opposed to taking someone's word for it.

Why the fuck did they put the pause button on the console itself instead of the controller. Who thought that was a good idea.

Other than that I like the system, it's library isn't up to the standard of the NES, but it's still got a decent selection of great titles. I'm in the market for one atm but all I ever see around are model 2s.

>brazilian tectoy games weren't very good

Agreed in parts. The Wonderboy hacks with Monica's gang characters were pretty fun, as hardly someone here could imagine seeing a game with those characters outside some LCD games, considering Brazil never had a great tradition developing games, it was a funny thing to see (even today I can't unsee Monica's plush bunny instead Shion's sword). But about the rest, you're not so wrong, you only talk as you are the only one who knows the truth. Although I grew up playing SMS, I feel it lacks "that title", like Castlevania (Master of Darkness is a nice ripoff though), Megaman games, Super Mario 3, Metroid and some others. It's a shame for a console with good titles like Psychic World, Shinobi, Sonic 2, Castle of Illusion, VF Animation and some nice arcade ports like Sagaia and Bonanza Bros.

Anyway, I'll let a music that always makes me happy about SMS:

I had such a great time playing that game, just finding all the hidden gold, the secret passages, learning how to fight some of the bosses twice for extra money. Stick with original SMS games and you should be fine. Once you start playing ports of games from better systems the quality meddles.

I'll be quite frank with this but I don't have a lot of favorite SMS/NES games because the bar for how good a game should be was low during that era in my opinion. Then again, your favorite genre and tolerance of certain things may be different from the next person.
