sup /vr/? I am challenging you all to to explore the dungeons of telengard with me. We should all see who can make the strongest character. It's a simple D&D inspired rpg where you play a magical warrior on a quest to get as rich as possible. Really the only point of the game is to level up your character, we should see which one of us is the best. If you guys want to play against me I will give you some tips.

Try to roll your stats so all of them are at least double digits and above 12 if possible. Even charisma cause it keeps those fucking hobbits from stealing from you

name your character sv"anon" or else the game will delete your saves after you load them unless you want to play hardcore character.

The game has a timed mechanic so you have 5 seconds to make a decision or else it thinks you choose to do nothing.

Bring up inventory with H, cast spells outside of battle with C.

If you find an item that you already have with a lower + do not pick it up or it will replace your better one.

The game is freeware you can get from the authors website http://aquest.com/telen.htm
or play in browser http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Telengard.html

The graphics are quiet nice apart from the color palette, the demons look pretty bad ass actually? Good luck treasure hunting should you choose to partake on this quest

Does anyone know if you can switch CGA palletes on dosbox?

you gotta stay close to an inn until you get a few levels, I got this dope ass +4 sword now, I had a +1 elven cloak but a fuckin cocksucker hobbit stole it. I'm level 4 now though think I am going to start venturing out to find some serious gear.

Also another tip, ALWAYS give lots of gold at altars, do not be filthy pagan trash. You will be rewarded, on a previous character I had before I knew about the save trick a dragon gave me a +5 sword after I gave 2000 gold.

It's even older than that. It started in 1976/77 as a game for mainframe computers named DND, itself a derivate of another computer game also named dnd. The commercial home computer ports were renamed Telengard to avoid lawsuits with TSR and Mattel who held the Dungeons and Dragons license at the time.

holy shit, I just took a teleporter cube into some deep part of the dungeon with like level 15-20 baddies, I beat the shit out of a bunch of them, found some +7 boots, ran out of mana then ran into a level 17 dragon! I managed to evade and used a rescue scroll to peace the fuck out and the dragon had followed me back to the INN!!! I evaded again and snuck my way over to the next inn one screen over where I am waiting in safety for that dragon to go away.

Scrolls are very handy but you loose all the gold you are carrying.

DnD kept permanent level drain into modern time.
At least Telengard gives you a way to avoid it. In Wizardry it was a fate worse than death.

>> No.2034568

>>2034023
There were also spells to deal with those kinds of "problems". :-)

Sorry for the bad formatting, this is a straight copy & paste from the D&D Rules Cyclopedia (TSR, 1991). The spell in question is a 7th level clerical spell. Was probably published in earlier books such as D&D Companion or Masters sets (part of the "Basic D&D" line during the 80's) and AD&D 1st edition (back when it was just called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, because there was no 2nd edition yet). Maybe even one of the supplements for 1974 edition also? (never played with those rules so can't be sure...)

--------------------
Restore*
Range: Touch
Duration: Permanent
Effect: Restores 1 level lost to energy drain

This spell restores one full level of energy (ex-
perience) to any victim who has lost a level be-
cause of energy drain (for instance, from a
vampire's attack). It does not restore more than
one level, nor does it add a level if no level has
been lost. Furthermore, the cleric casting this
spell loses one level of experience, as if struck by
a wight when the spell is cast; however, the cler-
ic's loss is not permanent, and the cleric need on-
ly rest for 2dl0 (2-20) days to regain the lost
experience.
The reverse of this spell, life drain, drains one
level of experience from the victim touched, just
like the touch of a wight or wraith. Casting the
reversed spell causes no experience level loss to
the cleric, nor does it require any rest afterward,
but it is a Chaotic act, avoided by Lawful clerics.
--------------------

Btw, the asterix after the spell name means it can be "reversed" (you have to learn it backwards though), as in to inflict harm rather than heal.

Not everything in those old editions was recoverable though. In AD&D you had the concept of System Shock and Resurrection Survival rolls, so it wasn't a given your PC would be brought back to life even if you found a high-level cleric willing to cast the spell. Then there was the permanent CON loss...

>> No.2034596

I'm a bit bothered by the size. Each level is 200x200 and there's 50 of it.
I considered mapping it out but a normal sheet can only fit 40x60 so you'd need 20 of them for just one level and it would take endlessly to map out since you can only see one square into each direction. Finding your position on the map after a teleport would also take forever without coordinates and the limited landmarks.

>>2034638
Play it in his memory, it's still a really enjoyable game, having a shitload of a gold trying to find your way back to an INN is a lot of fun.

I ran into a high-level troll, escaped, found a +17 ring of protection and +25 shield on the same tile, took another step, got approached by a friendly dragon which gave me a +5 ring of protection, then I realized "oh man I would REALLY hate to die right now, better quit while I'm ahead", used a return scroll to escape and save my game.

After putting a few hours into this game, here are some things I've noted:

-The most evil and dangerous monster in the game isn't a vampire, ghoul, or even the dreaded dragon; it's motherfucking elves and hobbits.
-Altars are annoying money pits you're better off avoiding.
-Use the Light spell to see staircases and pits on adjacent tiles.
-Don't bother trying to map it out. Each floor is 200 by 200 tiles, and there are 50 floors. That's two million rooms!

I always try to keep (Continual) Light, Levitate and Protection from Evil up.
I got tons of Strength Potions so I gulp them when I'm on lower levels.
Detect Traps is useful on low levels where the traps could kill you.
I'm not sure how invisibility works. It may reduce the chance of enemy surprise or increase your chances to flee.
Fear probably shifts battles into your favor but it's expensive to keep it up.
Passwall seems pointless unless your are trapped somewhere. Astral Walk seems to be the same with a prolonged effect.
Teleport is incredibly useful to get up and down fast. You can go up to level floors so with just four castings you're can go from top to bottom and vice versa without losing your loot.
Time Stop doesn't cancel all encounter and I tend to survive on evasion alone anyway.
Raise Dead may be useful as a fail safe for some puzzles but otherwise it's too expensive to kee up.
Word of Recall costs you all your items so it's worse than scrolls of rescue in my eyes.
Restoration is a strong healing spell when your ring of regeneration doesn't cut it.
Of the combat spells I mainly use Turn Undead because it's cheap.

You can save with F4 even in the dungeon and kill yourself with Q.
I think I broke the game by solving one of the button puzzles on level 50. At least I can't progress past level 15.
