How do you fuck up this badly at translation? Who oversaw the western release for this and said "This is good"?

You know old games were translated by japanese people that had some english classes, right?
Look somewhere for the King of Fighters 96/97 endings, they have a lot of "cool" words that don't really make any sense where they are used. Things like "dweebenheimer".

Or Zero Wing.
Or Samurai Shodown. VICTOLY!

Localization wasn't really a thing back then. They just sloppily translated them and sent them out.

Some new games fuck up from time to time, too. When Guy is defeated in SF4, he yells "MUNEN!". They translated it literally into English, which gave us the hilarious "PROFOUND SADNESS!".

Imagine someone shouting PROFOUND SADNESS when dying.

Probably was overseen by someone who knew even less English than the translator did.

What I really want to know is why certain phrases are so common in Japanese. What's with the obsession over calling special punch moves '______ Upper' or '_______ Knuckle'? They sort of make sense, but not that much. Why not call it Uppercut, or any other complete fist-based move?

Similar one I noticed from Kingdhom Hearts 3D is calling sword attacks '_____ Edge'. Is that a common one?

That goes into the "awesome localization pile"

Or, they just didn't care, because asking for a correction would mean another 2 weeks of turnaround from Japan.

Ghostbuters on the NES. Yet as horrible as our Engrishy ending text was, Japanese players had it even worse for their version of that game. Their ending text was glitched so that it became just two random Japanese letters. Pic related is all you got after breaking your thumb climbing those staircases.

It's common practice to quote for emphasis in Japanese, because bold and italic fonts don't work too well with kanji, and underlining will make half the words into other fucking words.

Some of the early games were translated by the Japanese, who had asked, like, a nephew who had English at school to translate for them, if even that (half the time they just used a dictionary). Funnier are modern fan-translators, who believe that it's an element of style that should be preserved and have characters all speak ironically. So you are "my beloved"? I "love" you.
