2019407 No.2019407 [Reply] [Original]

After years of chilling in the backlog, I finally around to playing this game. I'm six hours in and having a lot of fun with it. Couple questions though: Did I make a mistake my playing the PS1 remake over the SCD original? And should I play the SCD or PS1 release of Lunar 2?

>> No.2019440

The remakes are arguably better / more polished.

You would also have to deal with an infuriating random encounter rate in the sega CD originals.

However both versions of each are worth playing, and the CD version of lunar 1 has an entirely different final dungeon, that makes it worth the play alone.

>> No.2019458

>>2019407
Play both. They have some differences, so it'll be fresh for you.
Doesn't matter which version you play first.
The Sega CD version has way better battle music.

Thanks for the info. I'll just play the PS1 version of 2 to keep things consistent since I'm in the middle of the PS1 version of 1.

>> No.2019465

Nah, you're good. Both versions are great, really.
I'd just go with the PS1 version for consistency.

>> No.2020969

sega cd version is harder, so made the battles feel more worthwhile imo, though if you have problems with graphics the sega cd one may not appeal to you. Personally loved the last boss in the 2nd one on SCD; felt like the ps1 version didn't do it justice.

>> No.2021016

This is wrong. The Playstation version is harder.

Lunar 1 and 2 aren't the same game.

yes

All of them are pretty good. I think Lunar 2 on the Sega CD is the best of the bunch, followed by Lunar 1 on the Playstation.

In terms of difficulty Lunar 1 PSX > Lunar 2 SCD > Lunar 2 PSX > Lunar 1 SCD.

Someone decided that people don't want to play RPGs anymore, so we don't get AAA RPGs anymore. And when we do, they suck. There's still decent strategy RPGs and handheld RPGs, though. They won't look as good as Lunar 2, because modern anime style sucks (well, even the Playstation versions look ugly, the SCD games came out right before the fugly 90s took over)

Also its a relatively short game. But I had just come off of playing Legend of Dragoon and Dragon Warrior 7 when I picked this up so it felt super short in comparison.

Too bad we never got the Saturn version of Mahou Gakuen Lunar (not surprisingly, though, the Saturn had a fuckton of great JRPGs we never got in the west).

Apparently, it uses Eternal Blue's system.

Even though I only discovered it about 2 years ago, Lunar 2 has weaseled its way up to the top of my favorites JRPGs. Everything about it just clicks. Part of the reason I decided to pick up a Sega CD, actually (that and wanting to get into Genesis stuff, I'd only played it casually up this point).

It does have "that part" though. Ghaleon's tower is very annoying. And you have to go back in the post-game.

Hmm okay thanks, I think I'll stick with it then. I did notice that takes a couple seconds going into houses and changing rooms and such. I found it a little annoying at first, but thankfully it's nothing like FFVI for PS (guess VI will have to wait :/ )
It does seem a little easy too. Maybe I can run past some of these enemies and continue with the story without being under leveled? (Earlier this bearded man kept insisting I should allow him to help me, but I told him "I got this" and 4 or five battles later, when I crushed all my enemies, he didn't even praise me!)

The original Lunar (which not all that many people have played because it is on a niche (albeit infamous) CD peripheral) is ridiculously easy. Lunar 2 is about middling in difficulty. Most people with complaints about the difficulty come from the Playstation version of 1, which is filled with one hit KO attacks and bosses that fully scale with level. I prefer that myself, but there's nothing inherently wrong or weird about the remake being easy given the source.

Its ok, but it is a ground up remake that is really slow, has long load times, and overproduced music (you can't really tell the difference if you are using the speakers though).

I actually had a Sega CD as a kid, I just didn't really know about this, I guess? I don't really know what my excuse is, maybe I didn't read GamePro that month, who knows. Luckily it came with Snatcher, but I wish I would've had some of these RPGs back then, cause I think I would've loved them.
I'm normally bothered by high encounter rates or the need to grind more than the actual difficulty, but I could see how this would be too easy for some. (I've been using the auto battle mode fairly often)

>> No.2024227

>>2024218
I'd argue with that, sure. Best versions of FF1 and 2 are on the Playstation. FF4 on GBA is bugged and the active battle system doesn't work right. FF6 on GBA has scaled down graphics and the music sounds like garbage coming out of a GBA speaker. That leaves you with FFV, which I guess IS better than the non-ps2 compatible Playstation version.

There's a remake of 7 on 3ds, many says that it's a pretty big improvement over the ps1 version.

>> No.2024283

Well, there you go. The thing about DQ 7 is that it has really bad graphics. So while the DS versions of FF3 and 4 look really ugly compared to the original NES and SNES games, I'd imagine 7's remake looks better. Though not necessarily, since the enemy sprites looked ok.

I don't have a DS (or any Nintendo console newer than a 64, for that matter). Played FF3 remake on my ipod. It was ok.

I started with 1 and persona 2 looks tame in comparison, i had to farm for 2 days and unlock two ultimate persona to beat the final boss.
And i didn't even like the story.

Persona 2 on the other hand has sympathetic characters and a more interesting story, so the farming is more bearable.
