2014815 No.2014815 [Reply] [Original]

After seeing this solution as the best alternative to retro home consoles (versus that paid emulator that requires cartridges), I decided to soft mod my wii for retro goodness. I was shocked with how easy it was, but now I'm pretty overwhelmed with my options. Keeping in mind that I play all and any retro, what emulators for wii does /vr/ recommend?

>> No.2014845

Retroarch for just about anything before 5th gen.
Nintendon't for GC games.
Wii64 (Not64 now) and WiiSX are sort of flaky but some games do work, i would recommend using official VC wads for N64 games over emulation, but your options are still limited for N64.

>> No.2014910

>>2014845
Where do I get offial wads? I mean, other than the obvious. Do emulation sites tend to have them?

>> No.2014921

>>2014845
Wad injection also works fairly well.

>> No.2014923

>>2014910
yes. also google.

>> No.2014928

That site is really all you need OP.

>> No.2014931

>>2014921
I don't recommend doing this as it's possible to brick a console through injection.

>>2014928
That's pretty outdated despite having new entries, most homebrew apps should be downloaded from a direct source of the author or through GBAtemp.

I hate to be a needy faggot, but how does one run a wad file? Do they run natively or do you need a wad manager

You have to install wads with a wad manager ( you could also use emunand but in my opinion it isn't worth it), i recommend Yet Another Wad Manager, it's a german app but there's an english mod if you google it.

I also forgot to mention that with Retroarch you will be compromising IR detected emulation for the pros of overall better emulation and far more options.

When i say IR detected emulation i mean Zapper/Superscope games, don't know if Retroarch will ever have them.

>> No.2014964

I like that with the Wii, you can still very easily use a CRT so it looks good. Output options like s-video, SCART and Component are much easier to obtain on the Wii also.

If you have Bootmii/Boot2 or Priiloader, banner bricks aren't a problem.

>>2015017

It... Well, it works. It's a hacky way of using Nintendo's own VC emulators.

>> No.2015136

Op here. Is it worth it to download the homebrew browser? Will this allow direct download for some of these programs as opposed to transferring from a PC? Sorry to ask so many questions, and fuck you google dude. I ask these questions so that when I get out of class I can refine my own research.

>> No.2015145

>>2015136

I don't know if it still works but yeah, that was a pretty cool app. You could also use Wii Xplorer for FTP IIRC.
Now that you have the Homebrew Channel installed you don't need an SD card, you can use a USB drive for all your apps. If you prefer.

I stopped using Retroarch because I absolutely could not stand its terrible barebones "90s hacker" style interface, its lack of Zapper/SS support, and the fact that it NEVER would configure controllers how I wanted. I installed the individual emulators--which are EXACTLY the same under the hood but have none of the problems--and I never looked back.

>> No.2015152

>>2015136
I wouldn't use homebrew browser, the apps they offer are out of date and it is generally a shity interface. Just put them on SD card from your PC and run that way.

Dig into the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx 16 library. You'll be amazing to play this "3rd" console with a totally different feel to it.

>> No.2015160

Also OP, take this opportunity to grab some of WiiWare's better games. Though not technically retro there is plenty that feels right at home (Mega Man 9 & 10, Castlevania Rebirth)

Yes they are.
Do you have Bootmii as Boot2 installed or Priiloader?

>> No.2015180

I have bootmii installed.

>> No.2015182

As an IOS or as Boot2?
Does it show you the Bootmii menu when you turn on your Wii, or must you select it from the Homebrew Channel?

>> No.2015185

>>2015182
I installed both honestly. Should I have not done that?

>> No.2015191

>>2015185

That's fine, that's fine. The advantage of Boot2 is that if you brick your Wii, you can almost certainly recover it.
I'd advise taking a NAND backup immediately. Use the power/reset buttons to scroll to Bootmii's option menu, then select the Chip -> SD option. That'll create two files, key.bin and nand.bin IIRC, which can allow you to restore your Wii to this state if it gets bricked somehow.

You should also install Priiloader. This is a system menu modification which adds tweaks like region free, which may be important if you're using Wiiware.

Good looking out! I'll certainly get priiloader up.

The boot.elf file can be deleted. The private folder can be deleted and the privateold folder (if it exists) renamed back.

Another question I can't seem to get answered via Google is how do .bin .cue files work? How to I emulate ps1 games??

dios mios is better than nintendon't for booting gamecube games off usb

>> No.2015656

>>2015653

It's more accurate but you don't get audio streaming, disc swapping and choice of memory/controller

>>2015652

Use WiiSX. There should be included instructions. You need only the bin files and the PSX bios.
WiiSX isn't very good. I'd advise you to use something else to emulate PS1.

dios mios has supported disc swapping for a while.

also dios mios is getting audio streaming support very soon

it's apparently already been implemented, and the next revision that comes out will include it

I personally don't give a shit about any of the games that utilize audio streaming though so it never bothered me that DM lacked it

It is? I thought that was something they couldn't get around. Wasn't that half the reason Nintendont and Devolution exist?

It's been fixed for a while, but hasn't been released yet for some reason.

You'd probably spend way more than that collecting all the consoles+games you can emulate

I've yet to see any negative effects from "hacking up" my driver with CRT_emudriver

It's possible to brick a console through many ways if you don't know what you're doing. There are also ways to unbrick a Wii but if you managed to brick it you're probably too retarded to use them.

Finally contacted Nintendo Support. Apparently I only have to send them the power supply and the Wii, and after they see the problem I can either accept their prize or deny it and get my Wii back.

Either way, its 20€ to send.. hope I don't get ripped off.
