Okay guys, i need your help, i got a lot of DOS games, the problem: i'm too much of a retard to use DOSBox.
Are there any good frontends or another DOS launcher that is easier to use?

What's the problem?
Launching the game? Just drag the game.exe into the dosbox.exe

MS-DOS master race here.

Never used the command line before, have you? This is quite easy. Let's say you have Wolfenstein 3D unpacked in folder WOLF3D, under c:\games. When you launch DOSBox, and have the black DOS command prompt open, type the following:

mount c c:\games <press Enter>
c: <press Enter>
cd wolf3d <press Enter>

Then launch Wolfenstein 3D by entering the name of the game .EXE, whic is usually WOLF3D.EXE. You can view a list of all files and folders inside the WOLF3D-folder by entering:

dir /p <press Enter>

This.

OP, believe me when I say I am a bigger retard than you at PC tinkering.

But even I got DOSBox to work all sorts of games I never expected I'd get to play.

This guide is pretty much everything, but you can also do >>2009164

Be aware that doesn't work for all games, yet for some games it's the ONLY way things will work. Tie Fighter for example - I can't get it to launch via command lines, but it works perfectly dropping the START batch on the DOSBox icon.

Also, the DOSBox wiki has some really fantastic, clear and concise guides on all the command lines you might need.

Some games for example, you might have to mount several isos for it, and mount the game itself. That's where the guides come in.

Godspeed dude and remember if I could do it, believe me you can.

Basically do what was said before, though I say also look into D-Fend Reloaded, you can have profiles/configs set up for each game and even have it so it'll auto-mount the CD for you if necessary, either mounting the image within dosbox or it'll ask which drive to use in your computer.

>> No.2009264

You don't deserve to play these old games if you can't even figure out how to change directories and launch executables in DOSBox. If you actually looked at the documentation or one of the many websites that explain DOS commands you'd figure it out in 5 minutes.

Anyone tried dosbox for android? I thought it might be fun to try cannon fodder with the touch screen instead of a mouse, then I though distinguishing between left and right clicks might not be so hot, but it couldn't hurt to try.

So I downloaded aDosBox, I can load up the game fine, but once I'm in I can't type. I can type fine in the dos part, but in the game keystrokes just don't seem to register. It's one of those games with the anti piracy screens where you have to type a word from the manual, so I just get stuck there and can't do anything.

I find the well commented and easy to understand conf file for Dosbox easier to use than some of the complicated DB frontends that emphasize profiles and cascading inheritance with individual game configs.

Once you get a decent generic config that works for a majority of games; you mostly never have to touch it again.

EXE, DOSBOX.CONF - that's it.

And once you know the basic DOS directory commands, then all games work roughly the same.

SETUP.EXE, SETSOUND.EXE - Sound, VESA mode, kb/joy.
GAME.BAT, GAME.EXE, GAME.COM - Guess :).

You generally use the same directory as your DOS C Drive and just install lots of games into it; so be sure to put the mount commands in your DOSBOX.CONF.

mount c x:\dosgames
mount d y:\ -t cdrom

this again. always this. most game EXE's can be dragged and dropped onto dosbox. just be sure to download latest version of dosbox.

unless you use some edgey linux with no GUI. in which case, you're a big faggit or trolling.

>> No.2010568

One thing I wish dosbox would do is split the config into a host and guest settings file (so dosbox becomes dosboxes), but I suppose there are ways to improvise it yourself

i remember trying one of those frontends years ago and finding that the available configs for each game also contained arbitrary host settings from who ever happened to create the file. kinda ruined the plugnplay aspect if you have to tinker with the settings each time before use.

>> No.2010571

I usually just drag the folder with the game to the dosbox.exe. That way the folder is mounted as C:
If a game needs a CD drive, add imgmount D "game.iso" -t iso to the bottom of the dosbox.conf

>> No.2010574

>>2010568
You can always download an individual copy of dosbox for each of your games, and set the config accordingly for each game. I haven't don't this myself technically, but for example I have my DOSbox with my preferred settings for most vidya, but I've got a few GoG / Steam DOS games that launch from their own DOSboxes.

>> No.2010651

>>2009180
You should really stick your mounts in the conf file so you don't have to type it when you start up.

Also if he needs he can try dir /? to find what the switches are. dir /w/ad/p is useful for listing directories. If you're in the middle of a pause and want to get out ctrl+c will break without having to finish.

You can use edit to modify text files in dos but it might be easier to just do it in windows and then ctrl+F4 to refresh the file system.

To move down one directory he can also use cd .. to move down two cd ../..

If he needs to know dos commands he just google dos commands and some of it will generally apply in dosbox pretty spot on.

>> No.2010659

>>2010574
You don't even technically need individual copies of dosbox, just make new configs and make a shortcut to the dosbox.exe with -conf "configname.conf" in the target. Optionally also -noconsole

I don't quite agree. Part of the appeal retro gaming has is to replicate as well as possible both the feel and the atmosphere from when you originally played your old games. People who hunt CRTs, or make arcade cabinets, console hunters, people who pick up old computers and set them up as gaming machines - they're all looking to make their experience as close as the original as possible. And having to deal with DOS/Windows 3.1/95, etc was pretty much integral to playing games. Like >>2010886 said, being booted to DOS or having to fiddle with your system files made it so much more... i dunno, intense. To me (and this is just me ok you can differ and it's alright) DOS will forever be one with 80's-90's PC gaming.

You want straight forward stuff, all the more power to you. And I think that being able to have it your way is radical as shit.

>> No.2010938

>>2010921
>People who hunt CRTs
To be fair, CRTs aren't a nostalgic way to play games, they're just a better way to play them, period. For old SD games CRT TV's are the reigning champ outright. For computers CRT monitors with older games and scaling is perfect and plus CRTs just look better than LCD for color, motion and image quality.

If there was a better display technology for the games many people would use that. But there's not. Sure some people do it for for originality, but most people do it because it's the premium experience.

In all fairness, DOS is pretty much the only platform that still requires some form of command line dickery to get games working. You don't even have to do that for C64 games anymore.

While it is a nice option to have, it's 2014 and it shouldn't be a necessity.

>> No.2011017

>>2011000
>You don't even have to do that for C64 games anymore.
It depends on the way you got the games in. Knowing how to get the floppy directory and being able to load more than just the first game is handy and be it for troubleshooting.
You can always try to get games preconfigured so you don't have to do anything special to run them but that can limit the games at your disposal and may end with a suboptimal configuration.

The crux of what he was saying is /vr/ is /v/ at least a statistically majority of what made /v/ worthwhile early on. /vr/ is distilled good /v/, /vg/ is distilled bad /v/ and current /v/ is neo/v/ full of people who were never in /v/. There's some seepage between the three, but pretty much that's it pretty much turned out. So, old /v/ is actually /vg/ and /vr/ put together. Of course that doesn't mean /vr/ is all rainbows for everything, it just means most of the people here were the least and lesser shitlords from old /v/. All the old meme's about /v/, the ground isn't hard enough, kicking everyone's ass, /v/ being angry, that's here that's this community. That's our response to the shitty part of old /v/ and modernization. You don't see it come out as much here because, here is where those things come to fruition, the ground is hard here and there's a significant portion of less retarded individuals here.

Yes, that's exactly what I do. It only takes like 5 minutes to set it up, because I only install a small handful of small programs + a web browser before I configure my web connection. I only use Puppy for Internet, because I got tired of all the bloated antivirus and firewall programs that plague Windows. I still have Windows installed, and I use it for all the serious work, plus emulators of course, but I no longer browse the web from the Windows side of things.

The whole point is security. I boot to an obscure, RAM-only system and let the whole thing expire when I'm done to ensure that a potential virus infection would not survive a reboot. Been doing this for 5 years now, and I've been virus free the whole time.

For many Amiga games, it was often just a matter of booting your machine with the game floppy in the first drive (DF0:) and then swapping disks if necessary. Occasionally you'd need to format a blank disk for saved games, but that was an easy point & click thing from Workbench.

It sometimes got a bit more messy and DOS-like if you happened to have a HD and wanted to install games. Not all of them, mind you. Some couldn't even be installed to HD, due to copy-protection. Others were easy to install because the game provided a "install to HD" icon... But other times you had to open up a CLI or Shell window and actually type some commands (ooooh scary commands!) that were given in the game manual, like manually copying the files to HD, and probably also adding an "assign" entry to your DH0:/s/startup-sequence script.

But generally it was easier than DOS, because you didn't have to worry about drivers and freeing up enough 640KB base memory. Amiga machines were advanced and from the future and all that! :-)

I can recommend these games:

>Battle Chess

>Commander Keen

>Command & Conquer
But I recommend Red Alert over C&C. RA is my favourite RTS of all time. In the Sobiet campaign you take orders from Stallin himself and are treated to these cheesy B-movie-esque cutscenes before the missions. Also highlighting soldiers and hearing their 'YES SIR? AFFARMATEEV' never gets old.

>Carmageddon
Must play car combat game. Fully awesome, kickass soundtrack. Great damage modeling and incredible physics to this day.

>Blood
Probably my single favourite game of all time. It's not the most polished game but its level design, atmosphere, distinctive character and ridiculously awesome gunplay/gameplay more than make up for it. I never get bored of Blood.

>Day of the Tentacle

>Descent/Descent II

>Doom/Doom II
Final Doom isn't mentioned but definitely check it out after these two as imo Plutonia is the best out of the original wads. Plutonia is fucking incredible.

>Duke Nukem 3D

>Full Throttle
One of my favourite three point and click adventure games along wth Leisure Suit Larry 7 and Blade Runner. Must play. Might be difficult to find in 2014 and not very well known anymore but everyone loved it back in the day. I guess you could consider it to be a 'gem' today.

>GTA
Also check out GTA 2.

>Jazz Jackrabbit

>King's Quest VI

>Leisure Suit Larry
I recommend 7 if you're only going to play one of the games. 7 is an absolute masterpiece and also comes with an inspiring jazz soundtrack.

>Quake
Another favourite of mine.

>Shadow Warrior
Another one of the 'Big 3' BUILD engine games.

>Tetris
Eh, play it on gameboy though.

>Monkey Island games

>Wolfenstein 3D
To be fair it's been completely overshadowed by its subsequently released shooters but would be a nice game to check out to see the historical progression of FPS.

Man DOS was great...

seconding DBGL - DosBox Game Launcher.

Just make a profile, set the machine to be a late 90s pc, set your .exe in the mounting tab, run the profile. done.

if the game needs installing, set the installer in the mounting tab, run setup.

My next step is to make batch files with for the shortcuts, turn those into exe, and use Steam as a launcher.

Depends on the game.

For some games that have CD based music, like Mechwarrior 2, you have to make a .bin and a .cue image, then imgmount the .cue, then mount like regular and run. This makes the EXE recognize the .CUE as a disk image, which lets you hear the music.

Playing Mechwarrior 2 without its music is blasphemy.
