Picked this up on Club Nintendo a few days ago and holy god I could not stop playing, game was amazing. At first I was like, "hah! This game is nothing! I don't know why I used to think this was hard!" Then dungeons 5 and 6 rolled around and oh boy...

Anyways, thinking of playing Metroid 1 next, how's that game? Played Link to the Past and Super Metroid recently so that sorta inspired me to go on a Zelda/Metroid binge.

Metroid 1 was not so good in my opinion, I don't think the NES was ready for Metroid style exploration. But if you must play it, a map is a definite must.

If you absolutely loved TLoZ, graduate to Startropics. Beware that you cannot beat part of the game without looking up an FAQ, but you'll know when.

Exactly, and this shouldn't put anyone off of playing the game.

Yeah I'm not man enough for that.

Never heard of it. I'll look it up.

Or you can just tell him that when prompted for a 3-digit frequency in the submarine a few chapters in, the answer is 747.

I thought Zero Mission was fantastic remake of the first Metroid. It's got better controls and a map. If you can get ahold of that one, I'd recommend it.

Assuming you looked it up but for anyone who didn't:

StarTropics was a late NES game that was developed by some of Nintendo's brightest devs, but strangely never released or intended for release in Japan. It's an action/adventure game with quite vicious difficulty at times. I never actually passed it but I have fond memories of it.

If memory serves me, it was the highest-budget video game ever released, and it was the first game I can remember where the budget was touted to make people anticipate the game.

if you don't mind changing a bit of the experience of playing Metroid 1 you could try this hack that sets a mini map on start besides other changes, like a save system with three files instead of passwords:

The hardest dungeon is level nine in the first quest. Good luck with the second quest, that shit is a whole new world of pain.

I don't cheat so I'll be using a PDF of the manual. Cheater.

You mean step down. The controls and gameplay are even worse and more grid based.

Your way is noble and just but StarTropics came with a letter necessary to progress. It was not part of the manual.

Startropics is cool and all, but there is some definite bullshit in that game. Like, in the very first dungeon, you can walk into a room and just die, because you walked into that room. It's horseshit!

Obviously that Anon was talking about " highest-budget video game ever released *for its time". And even if not, do you believe that Shenmue still is today the highest budgeted video game? It's been trumped numerous times, even today most AAA games go above Shenmue's budget. And furthermore, it is now known that Shenmue's budget number was inflated for marketing reason, the actual budget was considerably lower, can't remember the figure though.

Shenmue 3 when

That room wasn't fair but it was fucking hilarious and I'd say that's a good trade. There's no excuse for the fork that leads to instant death in the volcano, though.

But those are isolated incidents in an otherwise fair and solid game.

Who cares what anyone else thinks. I absolutely think you should play it, but whether you like it or not is up to you.

> I don't think the NES was ready for Metroid style exploration.
Definitely was. They just didn't do it as well as it could have been done. If they organized the layout a bit better or used the larger ROM modules they could have redoubled the graphics and made it look better and the map more interesting.
