Any good JRPGs like the Mother saga, or chrono trigger?

Mother is kind of unique, I haven't played a game that gives the same feel.

The thing is that I'm quite tired of the ff saga, and I was looking for someone different, like "fresh". By far, the only one I found was the mother saga, but that's exactly what I was looking for; something that gives me a different feel.

Try SMT.

Lufia II
Phantasy Star (anything other than IV may be too old school though)
Robotrek
Live A Live for sure.

And if you're game for action rpgs, anything by Quintet.

You might like Lunar.
Also, far from what you're asking for, but I never get to rec this. Action RPG with weirdo fighting game elements.

Has anyone else ever beaten a game and felt empty afterward?

I recently beat Earthbound and looking at this screenshot fills me with a great melancholy. I wish it never had to end. I fucking loved that game.

I can only hope that the other Mother games are just as good. Hold me, /vr/

Pokemon Red and Blue give a similar feel to Earthbound, in a way. If you've never played them, I recommend giving either one of them a try. Then move on to Crystal.

PS1 and 2 are alright. Its just a bit grindy (in 1 you can't even think about fighting more than one battle before healing until level 4). And going through dungeons is a bit annoying (1 being a first person dungeon crawler and 2 just being insanely complex).

3 on the other hand tried to do different things but never really seem to get it right. Pitty since the story has a nice twist.

As for a non traditional RPG setting Soul Blazer Trilogy are pretty good. They aren't really connected but all made by the same company and all have the same idea of death and rebirth.

Pokemon Red/Blue gives me sort of the same feel and Animal Crossing. But those may a good answer to OP's question.

Pokemon Red/Blue gives me the same feel as Mother. I'm not sure if their remakes would give that same feeling as well as the originals. Not Vr but Animal Crossing sort of does too.

It got political at some point (it clearly suggested that leftist means progress and is "good", while conservative means lack of progress and is "bad"), which isn't necessarily what RPGs should be about.

The humor is very similar to Earthbound and overall it's a pretty fun game.

The encounter rate is very high though, be warned.

It's not a complete and total lack progress. It's a lack of progress for the sake of progress alone, and a lack of superficial progress that might prove detrimental in the long run. And it certainly isn't by definition "bad" or inferior to leftist attitiudes as the game tries to imply.

>> No.2001003

someone in this thread mentioned SMT. I started that franchise with persona 4 and I think that game came very close to the 'mother' feel. Like a very modernized mother feel.

I hate when people say this about Earthbound. Most people on the the internet did NOT play Earthbound as children

>> No.2001105

>>2000901
are you kidding? Several NPCs in the game clearly show displeasure at how fast things have changed and "progressed"

>I don't think progress is always good for a town. Once people start looking up, they know no bounds.

Hell the opening text outright states that rapid progress taking root IS what summons Dark Gaia.

The game pretty seems to imply that a middle ground is what's best.

I liked all three of them for different reasons. It's hard to compare them, especially Earthbound and Mother 3 because they are both so different.

Some of the staff that worked on Mother also worked on Pokemon. The more you know.

>> No.2001301

Doesn't matter. I played the series pretty much in reverse.
Mother 1 is a bit different than 2; the world is more open, dungeons are labyrinths and the encounter rate is very high (unless you use the hacked-in Easy Ring).
Though you might pick up more references that way and perhaps you'll appreciate Mother 2 a bit more.

>> No.2001372

You miss half the game if you elect the drunken commie, how is that leftist?

>> No.2001373

>>2001283
Unless you're planning on using the Easy Mode ring for Mother, I'd definitely play EarthBound first.

Knowing Mother would help you appreciate EarthBound more, but the game is a bit of a serious grind and you have to be pretty forgiving of stupid Dragon Quest 2 style crap to get through it, so this is a case in which EarthBound would actually help you appreciate the first one more.

>> No.2001471

If you want to play MOTHER 1, just wait a week or two, there's a great romhack coming out that makes the game more balanced and look much nicer.

It's called MOTHER 25th anniversary or something, and it's currently in beta testing.

>> No.2001497

>>2001373
>serious grind
Unless you're going to use guide and know exactly where you need to go all the time, you won't need to grind whatsoever and always will be at comfortable level just by finding the right routes in dungeons and overworld.

Okage: Shadow King (PS2) is somewhat earthbound-like in the sense that it's really quirky, and with a lot of well-written and humorous dialogue. Definitely play that one more for the dialogue, likable characters and general style over the gameplay though, which is rather mediocre and run-of-the-mill.

As someone earlier said, Live A Live is really good if you want something different from the norm. The combat is unique, and unlike any other RPG I've played (closest would be a turn-based strategy RPG, but even that isn't quite alike), plus the game is divided into a lot of different scenarios, which aside from taking place in different time periods (which means the game mostly avoids the cliche medieval setting), they also have some unique gameplay element, like he Bakumatsu chapter focusing in stealthily infiltrating a castle, or the Prehistoric chapter having communication purely through actions.

Linda Cube: Again, Moon Remix RPG and Gokinjo Boukentai (game >>2000996 mentioned) all seem like pretty awesome and unique JRPGs as well, but those all have no translations currently, so may be tougher to play if you don't know Japanese.

>MOTHER 25th anniversary

Just looked it up and it is pretty nice looking. I actually start Mother 1 on the GBA earlier today just to see it myself, and I've been really enjoying it - it plays a lot like old DQ games - but that romhack is very tempting. I might hold off and try that instead.

>> No.2002412

I hate playing fan hacks with "improved" graphics.
I'd rather play the game the way it originally came out
