I believe that's because the game was a bit rushed. Rance was never a nukige.

There are a few remakes where the "modern" graphics consist of badly filter PC-98 CG.
A few games got new graphics or properly recolored CG.
Rance has several remakes. The first was 02 which is the only translated version of Rance 2, last year 01 came out and will get an OVA at the end of this year, a translation is in the works. Next year 03 will come out.
Yojuu Senki 2048, Raidy 1 and 2 were remade and released in English but they are kind of bad.
May Club, Runaway City, Season of Sakura, Three Sisters Story got the filter job.
A few Windows 9x games also got remakes that upped the resolution from 640x480 to 800x600. For instance Caste Fantasia 2.
Words Worth has a dubious translation for its Windows XP remake.

I was in the same boat as you a few months ago, I didn't want to play it because I thought it was just going to be a game pandering to horny teenagers, but it really is a great adventure game, easily one of the best stories in a video game I played in a long long time, and I ended up not minding the sex scenes (except like 2 of them that are really shoehorned in there), but they're for the most part done very tastefully.

The Windows PC version with the english patch is the definitive version. Not only does it have all the content from the PC-98 version, along with the same 16 color graphics, but it also has additional (optional) voice acting from the Saturn version with some extra scenes, and you can also patch in the original FM music from the PC-98 version. The only real complaint between the PC-98 and PC version is that the resolution is 4:3 letterboxed with black bars on top and bottom, other than that, it's virtually the same as the PC-98 version with more.

Yes I agree. It's best when it's not some simple reward for getting through the game but part of the characters and the story itself.

I just think it's admirable how they let us consider the characters in their entirety. Creators often keep sex hidden, locked away in the realm of the implied. Even if by necessity, a tradition of sexual content was born in VNs. I always thought it could be more, and VNs like YU-NO are incredible how they allow me to experience the story and characters in all their aspects. Sex adds to the character development.

Anything else feels like a repressed dream, like they're not letting things be what they could be because it's not proper. The way the game presents itself in your screenshot, it reminds me that besides everything I know about her she's an attractive woman.

To be quite honest I think the whole epilogue is a mess, it's boring and uninteresting, the big reveals end up turning into just long infodumps, and generally the whole mood of the game just turns from a detective story to a cheap sci-fi. None of the sex scenes make any sense, and very particularly the last one just tipped me over the edge. The expectation that it was supposed to be a smaller segment doesn't help either, it ends up being longer than any of the previous routes and it just drags on forever, introducing characters that are very hard to care about.

To boil it down it stops me from giving the game a 10/10, you can tell they were really trying to do something different with that epilogue but it really ends up failing in all regards. I guess that's what happens when a game continuously just keeps alluring to mystical elements but always shrouding them in mystery, and suddenly the cat just comes out of the bag and they explain everything, effectively destroying some of the magic the mystery had.

I find it weird that in most reviews everyone seems to praise that epilogue and yet here in /vr/ most people I've encountered seem to be very critical of it. I guess people are just trying to get the message across that Yu-No is really something special, which it is, but the epilogue really feels just like a completely different game.

You can skip text with CTR.
It's normal that you need to restart, the important part is effectively to complete your map.
Only use your saves when the crystal is blinking. Don't jump back after losing an item to advance as the item will remain lost until you pick it up again where you originally got it.

Because it is more secure. They provide encryption on every single point of the transfer; decryption is done fully on the user side. No unencrypted data is passed through the pipes at any point.

The downside is that they need user-side decryption which puts serious tax on the browsers: the entire data file is unencrypted via javascript and written to a HTML5 Local Storage (I think that is what it is called) buffer, and once this process is done, it offers the data for saving on your hdd.

This can be problematic because
- if browsers do not clear the local storage properly, it can swell into great size
- your download speed is limited by how fast the browser javascript engine can decrypt the incoming data
- since all data needs to be addressable, it can run into 32bit memory limitations. Hence the 1GB size limit. I don't know if 64bit browsers get the same bug or not - logically they should not, but I haven't tested it.

So we've had these retro Ero threads a few times and there's this series of games I've just recalled that I haven't seen mentioned here.

The title is something negative pertaining to the MCs job, something like "Bad Teacher" or "Lewd Sensei" or something like that and as that implies you're a teacher and have to tutor one girl per game and it ends up as you'd expect.

There were at least 2 episodes, the first with a brown haired girl, the second with a redhead that's into racing(?). They ran windowed in W98 and the gfx were really good quality and every episode had a handful of animations in addition to the stills. Both episodes (dunno if there were more) were in English although IIRC they weren't a part of JAST's lineup. Any ideas?

We're trying, we're trying. I can't do much when it's oddles of text and being the project lead as a non-translator person, it's hard to have them speed up the release to a reasonable pace given the circumstances but it's being done,

But I rather have the old classics translated like any of the mainline Tokimeki Memorial games, Sakura Wars 1-4, or even True Love Story be translated. But I guess the curse of the horror that these games' have in terms of its code and programming almost makes them impossible to hack for the most part. I've heard that all of the Tokimeki Memorial games in the mainline story are a bitch to hack. We got extremely lucky with Amagami for 90% of in terms of being able to technically put English in the game and have it look decent but the remaining 10 percent of problems is still a bitch to figure out.

Although it isn't much better, our reverse engineering allows someone to translate Kimikiss too, although it's a bit worst than Amagami and we won't get around to translating it on a reasonable time unless someone else picks it up.

But in any case, I doubt my skills would work here as the curse of bad/eccentric code that is almost impossible to reverse engineer for dating sims will apply here. You would have to kinda hit a huge jackpot and be very extremely lucky with how things are internally constructed to have a inkling of a chance to hack it open.

We got extremely extremely lucky with how Amagami/Kimikiss works but it's still difficult to work with. I doubt that this game will be any easier or the same to hack open and knowing what other people have said about Tokimeki Memorial having some of the worst code in existence to reverse, I wouldn't put my money on it being different for this game.

Sengoku Rance is a lot of people's starting point because it takes place off the main continent and you can get an introduction to the characters and a general feel for the rance universe without being dropped into something that you were expected to know 3 games ago.

I would highly recommend reading the digest versions of 1 and 2 if you're at all concerned with the plot, although they're mainly self-contained and not related to the overall story. I know this is a board for retro games and as such, outdated mechanics might be less annoying to the people who visit here but I wouldn't call rance 1 and 2 good retro games.

Rance 3 is where most of the kingdoms and concepts and recurring characters who are really important through the future games are introduced. It's also playable, if not perfect.

Rance 4 is translated, although 5 and 6 are not. KR is officially non-canon.

Rance 2 is pretty playable if you get the later ports, particularly 02 as that's what translated. There are worse dungeon crawlers out there and it's not a big investment.

Rance 1 is certainly not a good game. The art is amateurish and the gameplay extremely lacking. The translation is also shoddy so it's only interesting for historic reasons. In which case you can also play Little Princess if you want even more archaic adventures.
