1994206 No.1994206 [Reply] [Original]

I want to check out the Lunar games and need to know which versions are best: the Sega CD or PS1? What are the differences? Why did Working Designs feel the need to remake the Sega CD versions?

>> No.1994217

Remade? I think they just raised the difficulty a bit compared to the original japanese.

I mean remade for the PS1. Why are the two versions different?

I guess it's because PS1 is a different hardware than the Saturn and they preferred to remake the game rather than make a port.

>Saturn

meant Sega CD

So which versions are the best?
Obviously from a collectible standpoint the PS1 versions are both very nice packages.
But should I just try both?

>> No.1994720

I thought the first game was a very generic rpg ,had the ps1 version and only bought it because the packaging was so nice

Okay, to calm OP cause he's been asking the same question over and over again.

Lunar 1
PS1 > CD
Lunar 2
CD > PS1

Lunar 1 on the PS1 had better graphics, better gameplay, and a more refined story that added some stuff the original CD release did not.
Lunar 2 had stuff removed. Dungeons were smaller and difficulty par from bosses were a absolute joke.

I thought there wasn't any consensus on a "best" version, some people don't like the PS1 graphics nor the music, and the final dungeon is much better on Sega CD version IMO. The only thing PS1 has over Sega CD version is the extra stuff.

also ,sprite based cutscenes > FMV.
It just feels more organic to me, FMVs are too generic nowdays.

Lunar 1 on Sega CD is harder, has random battles, an open explorable world (similar to oldschool RPGs like Final Fantasy), and a generally darker tone to the story. Lunar 1 on PSX has enhanced graphics and cut scenes that are just like watching anime and has several elaborated story elements with extra characters and sidequests, but is also easier, has visible enemies to run from (ala Lufia 2), has a simplified overworld and several story elements omited/changed (The issues with the black dragon, what happens to Burg and the trials of the Dragonmaster are not present). Generally, the PSX version is considered to be superior with the Sega CD version receiving honorable mention as being the original. The soundtracks are also completely different.

For Lunar 2, both the Sega CD and PSX versions are basically the same with minor differences. The Sega CD version has more elaborate dungeons, extra cut scenes, some extra side quests and is more challenging. Whereas the PSX version has slightly better visuals and animu quality cut scenes. You cant go wrong with either version but L2 on Sega CD is a slightly better game whereas PSX looks better.

The first game needed to be remade because Game Arts felt they didn't get to do everything they wanted to do in the first game. The second game was just remade because of the success of the other remake.

In any case, just be sure you play L1 before L2. There's a lot of story elements and surprises you won't notice or appreciate unless you played the first game.

Thanks for the information. Do you think the translations are noticeably better in either version?

I know that Working Designs can be a bit hit & miss sometimes. I'm playing through Albert Odyssey at the moment and some of the text seems like amateur hours, almost like a wayward fan translation. One NPC's line is: "May the force be... oh wait, wrong adventure". Way to break the immersion.

I know that they took so many liberties with Shining Wisdom's script that Sega re-commissioned it entirely to another studio to fix for the EU release.

Lunar Silver Star

PSX is far superior

Eternal Blue on the other hand aged pretty well as far as SCD games go and you can really make a good case for either it or the PSX version.

Id say playbe PSX just for consistency but Id also strongly reccomend both

if you play the games in order there's a certain point in 2 that will make you cry like a new borne baby

One thing the CD has over PSX of Lunar 1 is one of my favorite opening.

I've never played the Japanese versions so I don't know how accurate the translations are, but all Working Designs games have that style of humor.

The PSX versions however have a LOT more dialog. Even basic NPCs in towns will have entire conversations with the cast and their dialog will change completely each time something happens in the game. Lunar games on PSX are some of the most chatty classic JRPGs. Which is a pretty cool thing imo.

it's all pretty organic sounding and entertaining too. very little echo which is something that plagues a lot of JRPGs

Thanks guys.

I found a really nice condition PS1 version of Silver Star and bought it. Looking forward to playing it.
