the master system and saturn outfits could be anything.

That isn't necessarily because it was tacked-on, even though we know that they had a cd-less design as well.

It had its own processor and ram because back in 1994, it took quite a lot of cpu power to just read stuff from the CD. I mean, you needed the cpu to continuously tell the drive to read sector x, then have it fetch the incoming data, store it somewhere in memory, all the while you still want to run a game. It is part of the reason why some early drive extensions, like the C64 floppy drive, but even the Mega CD, had full independent processors of their own.

Sega had plenty of experience with that after the Mega CD, which is why they had hitachi design the entire drive system for them, that would work entirely independent, have nigh uncrackable copy protection, and was upgradable (mpeg card, but in also other ways).

Yes. The character designs are actually from the same designer of Hatsune Miku. Sega is involved with vocaloid stuff a lot too. There's a Virtual On Miku in Super Robot Wars. It explains a lot about this show really.
