Though MinSon and Unlimited aren't retro.
Not like anyone except me liked Unlimited anyway.

I tried to like this game and its concepts, I think it would have been better if the battles themselves didn't have that shitty slot system.

The board game concept I could live with.

I actually didn't like the Reel system out of battles, using like, 30 reels just to open a chest was madness at the beginning of the game, if you know how to play though, Reels are insignificant.

What I didn't like was that there was no classic map exploration anymore, the board game interface in the map really killed me.
All the rest was great, though you really need to know your shit.

Not him but MinSon has A LOT of missing text compared to the original RomaSaGa, the gameplay is also very different.

Do you remember the Geckling quest in Oapu? In MinSon you only get the dialogue with the attendant whereas in SNES RomaSaGa Hawke discovers that it was a slavery business set up by the Butcher and swears he'll make him pay for that too.

I do agree that RomaSaGa 2 would be more important, Gideon Zhi is working on that though, so maybe you'll see something in 2020 if you're lucky. The game's easy enough if you know basic moonrunes, and believe me, it's amazing.
I think I restarted it for the fourth time because it's so damn good.

I didn't say it's good, just different.

The games are actually very different they only have some things in common like characters and general settings, you might as well consider them different games altogether.
>I heard it was hella buggy and incomplete in general
I don't know about that, I know there are the usual bugs regarding battles but frankly all of the SaGa games until Frontier had a few bugs, that doesn't stop them from being good though.

I do think that SNES RomaSaGa explains some minor lore things better than MinSon but I don't think people would play it just for that, I too didn't do all the characters' quests anyway. It has a few things that are quite interesting though, you can decide a character's parents profession to establish his stats and class for instance which is pretty cool, the battle system is kinda dynamic and more reliant on positions than MinSon though there are not LPs and so on, there's a lot to talk about really.
>>1989261
I prefer Kujinshi's theme because it had a great build up in Gerald's story and I liked the whole Gerard story arc, a shame it's used as a common boss battle theme later on.
The Last Battle theme is also amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgKHB_pfi7Q

There's this thing about RomaSaGa II, it's more emotional and sad compared to the other games in the series, and it's reflected very well in the soundtrack.
While the other games have a more upbeat and adventurous style, RomaSaGa II has more of a tragic tone, the whole story about the seven Heroes is perhaps the biggest drama in the game and one of the most memorable in the series. It's my favorite title in the SNES trilogy, even though RomaSaGa III is much more polished.

Yup, unless you use a gameshark, that is.
He'll leave permanently once you reach EP 20 if I'm not mistaken, he's needed to trigger a special quest.

Also, he's not that great compared to others, especially Silver or Barbara so you would want to have better party members until you got a firm grasp of the game.

Same here, RomaSaGa 3 feels more polished but there isn't nearly as much freedom as 2.
I also like the character designs more.
>any cool RS2 mods?
There isn't much afaik, I think there are a few patches for character sprites that make them look like the artworks but nobody made a patch for the new contents from the mobile version.
Anyway if it isn't on the atwiki I doubt anyone has made anything as that's the hub of the JP SaGa modders.

I've been thinking about doing something myself since there are those neat edit tools but I don't have enough time to put some serious effort into it, not to mention that right now I can only do the graphical part, I didn't learn anything about coding patches so it would take me even more time.

As far as I know there was some pottery with Red on it but I didn't see any Alkaiser stuff, maybe Itoken played the theme during one of the concerts but it was mainly about Romancing SaGa rather than the other games, even the website only had RomaSaGa cameos.

I think you can find something on Ebay since scalpers went crazy with that stuff.
After all most of them were all unique handmade pieces of art done by some Saga prefecture traditional potters and handpainted by Tomomi Kobayashi, if you're a collectionist they're worth quite a lot, not to menton the inherent artistic value.
There were even some lovely sake sets that had printed sprites form the games.

Well, I'd say SaGa Frontier since it retains the classes from the old SaGa games, so you still have Human/Mecha/Monsters/Mystic characters, the class system is a bit different but it's the most similar to those, of course the general system is also much more expanded compared to the old GB games, if you're a /m/an you'll appreciate it even more because there's a classic Sentai protagonist and even a Mecha protagonist with really good storylines, it's also a great introduction to the rest of the series imho since it's a bit easy and more relaxed compared to the other titles.

It's also the only SaGa out of the first trilogy with Mecha in it, except RomaSaGa II which has a mecha character which is more comedic than anything, her LP is no joke though.

I'd really like to have enough time to seriously work on a script translation but right now it's impossible.
The game doesn't even have many actors, the problem is that many things will change as it's extremely non linear, so the same character may have up to 3 or 4 different lines for a story event, I could do all the Gerald's generation script in a few weeks if I had enough time as that is more linear than the rest of the game, from there on though...

The text is really dry and a clear sign of "direct translation" and the translator made some basic flubs like translating the word "Amai" in the wrong context as "Sweet!"

But it's certainly enough to play the game I suppose

This and some status graphics are untranslated. SaGa for me has always been about the battling instead of story and dialogue for the most part anyway, and for that it gets the job done.

...Well, SaGa Frontier 2 is an exception to that rule, but that was the point.

Be sure to kill the Stone, Tree and Flame lords, it becomes much easier, if you feel badass you can also try to go for a full run, but you'll definitely need all the Quells you can find and a good skillset.

The beginning is kinda rough but one you get to good quests like any of the seven wonders you can get strong really fast, given that you know how to train your characters, how to build your panels, how to smith, how to get magic tablets etc.

Nice to see the thread is still up.

Huh, how weird.

Outside of the named characters, I always thought of most of the characters in RS2 as "recruitable generics" with snazzy naming schemes rather than actual characters.

Not really, I'm probably going to blow your mind but all the classes have a set of name that refers particular things.

>All the female Court Mages are named after precious stones
>All male Court Mages are named after Zodiac signs
>All Heavy Infantry dudes are named after big/shelled animales except Ferdinand
>Light Infantry males are named after American Presidents while females are named after actresses
>Male and Female Rangers are named after European Kings/Queens/Rulers
>Male and Female Free Fighters are named after Greek Heroes
>Male Free Mages are named after Stars while Female Free Mages are named after Flowers or Herbs
>Male Imperial Guards are named after famous Generals while Female Imperial Guards are named after Roman Goddesses
>All Tacticians are named after Chinese/Japanese strategists
>All Eastern Guards are named after japanese swordsmen
>All Desert Guards are named after characters from The Arabian Nights
>All Amazons are named after various Heroines
>Male Nomads are named after Mongolian Rulers while Female Nomads are named after middle eastern female literary figures/legends
>Male and Female Holy Orders are named after Catholic Saints
>Ocean women are named after famous Singers
>Privateers are named after seafarers or pirates
>All martial artists are named after Wrestlers
>All Male thieves are named after birds while Female Thieves are named after swift little animals
>All Salamanders are named after Volcanoes
>All Nereids are named after Greek Nymphs
>All Irises have named reminiscent of the sky or atmospheric phenomenons

Regarding Herders, hunters and Molemen I don't really get the references, but I'm sure there's a pattern there too.

RomaSaGa 2 is DEEPer than you'd think, oh and the Seven Heroes' names are anagrams of some of Tokyo's metro stations.

And yes, some of those have some unique roles, but they're mostly the ones that start a generation, Emerald was the one that taught magic to Gerard while Sofia was the leader of Cumberland's resistance, Karl was the monk that destroyed the demons in the cave, etc.

Most of them have a definite role in the games' story, and the there are others that become legendary in their own generic right, like Hannibal who was the most popular RomaSaGa 2 Character in the last polls despite being a super generic Imperial Guard.
So famous they even gave him his own desing in Emperor's SaGa.

Herders: Nordic names (e.g Olaf, Erik, Snorri)
Hunters: Seems to be names of indigenous tribes
Molemen: Types of soil, usually removing the really obvious "sol" particle from the end (e.g グライ = Gley, from "Gleysol")

Funny since the herders live in the south.
>Hunters: Seems to be names of indigenous tribes
Idon't know about that one, I've always wondered about this but never did some research

Now this is interesting, but how about the poster Moleman Cielo, it means Sky in a few languages...
>>2001761
Funnily enough, the official romaji don't reflect that as Kujinshi is called Kzinssie, but it was supposed to be an anagram of Shinjuku...

The 11s don't seem to know what most of the Hunters are named after either, they could only figure out 3

I got this info from a Korean page but...
クワワ (Canada Kwakiutl tribe)
オセイ (USA Osage tribe)
ケチェワ (Peruvian Quechua tribe)

As for Cielo? Well, that's kind of a mistranslation, I suppose... so what's it supposed to be?

http://global.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/543321/sierozem

Also the "official" Kzinssie" spelling is hilarious in a wtf kind of way.

Yeah, Cielo is a bit strange, I don't think we'll ever get a clear answer for that.

And yeah, poor Kujinshi has to suffer even for his name, I remember I saw the romaji first in an advertisement for Lord of Vermilion 2 when they made a SaGa collab and it sounded too retarded to be true, turns out even in the last Itoken Album they refer to him as Kzinssie.

Though to be fair, it still is better than Bokuohn being retconned from old puppetmaster to glam rock youngster, at least Kujinshi's design remained pretty consistent through the years.

Umm... that link right there...

("Siero"zem, low, gray-brown soils, and the word "Siero" would probably be romanized in a similar way to "Cielo")

I did a search online and this seems to be the widely accepted answer amongst the JP community.

This seems like a cool resource for just about every name.

I read the stuff in the link, sorry I phrased my post a bit awkwardly.
What I was thinking about is the fact that Cielo is indeed a weird romanization, especially since there's no zem at all, but all the names intentionally miss the last part of the original quote anyway.

That last link was quite nice though, very accurate descriptions.

Saiva from the Romancing SaGa Ultimania; it's from her the 3 Dark Gods and Elore were Born. Elore before she was defeated and the 3 Dark Gods from her body after her defeat. Ironically it was Elore that helped bring about her downfall as she wanted to use him to defeat Marda. It was also because of Saiva that the Main Gauche (Left Hand Sword) even exists because that sword is the same "Needle" Saiva used to create Elore.

I remember that page, a shame that most of the lore doesn't make it in the games, just like it's a shame they cut most of the stuff regarding Johan in SaGa Frontier 2, you have to read the novel to truly appreciate an already great character.

Not the Anon you're responding to but the fan patch does have a lot of parts that aren't really well translated and most of the characters don't really convey their personality well, Mikhail and Harid are perhaps the ones who suffered most regarding protagonists, some parts are good though, like Robin's event, the Professor etc.
