I'm currently just in a total shmup mania. I just downloaded whatever I could get for free and plan to buy stuff on Steam too. I think it came after playing R-Type Final and Thunderforce IV again, and then someone recently posted this link on /v/:

Contains two mame emulators, the larger of which, shmupmame, has about 70 roms including some classics such as 194x, Dodonpachi, Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider, Mars Matrix, and a bunch of others. Kamui is pretty good and not too difficult. Crimzon Clover is fantastic, but it should be noted that the version in this is not the steam version. Hellsinker in here is apparently a demo, not my doing.

Currently I'm having fun with too many shmups at once. I'm also surprised how many cool shmups pc actually has. Hydorah for example is a shmup I play atm, which is really cool for a modern indie shmup in 80s style.

Play as Shin. Which stage are you stuck on, the first air force stage? My advice is to memorize the level layouts and develop a plan on where you will use the special weapons. Save the megacrush for the bosses. It wrecks multi-part bosses, and the invincibility frames are very useful for defense.

>> No.2006268

>>2006263

You have to have the patience to git gud at shmups, its mostly just playing them over and over til you have most of the game memorized.

People can have natural talent for them insofar that they have good reflexes, but the genre is still mostly based on experience and memorization.

>> No.2006269

>>2006268
I dont think memorization is really that important.
I often can memorize parts of the level, but I still die there.
I think reflexes and a good overview is much more important.

How do people which are good at lets say Gradius III and IV for example, how did these people played Gradius V for example?
I could imagine many already were really really good at it, without memorizing everything.

>> No.2006271

>>2006269

Reflexes are important but that comes with playing the game more, you'll develop muscle memory, which develops off memorization to an extent, it helps to know how shitty bullet patterns are going to come at you.

Some shmups require more memorization than others though, such as R-type for example.

>> No.2006301

>>2006271
But the thing is, I dont really have that much problems with seeing behind bullet patterns or whatever, but rather just with being able to dodge all this shit on the screen.
When you play on hard, then often the whole screen is just full of bullets and shit flying everywhere around.
How does this have to do with memorization? This just clearly a question of trained reflexes, good sense for overview and a huge amount of sensitiveness.

That's at least how I feel about this. Just memorization alone is far from being enough. This is more about being able to concentrae yourself so good, that you are able to dodge all this shit and still keep a clear head.

Because it's patterns.

Bullets don't fly any which way. Certain enemies follow patterns and shoot in patterns.

You'll see this as you get better. At my level, yes I can use muscle memory and just shoot from the hip. But it's pointless. I know the patterns I know the enemy waves for most of my games.

Bullet hella are especially about memory. There's so many bullets u won't make it if you don't know the patterns they come in. Trust me. 1cc a newer cave game and tell me you don't need memorization .

I wasn't even talking about danmaku games, I was just talking about regular shmups like Gradius, but on hard difficulties.
When you play bullethells, then yes, you really often need memorization to survive, because often the whole screen is just suddenly full of bullet patterns and you need your save spots, but when you play games like Gradius, there also often is a whole lot of shit going on on the screen, but its less about patterns, but just rather about being sensitive enough to be able to dodge this shit.

When you look at real pros in Gradius, there of course you also can see that they know their patterns and how to attack bosses, etc, but whats much more impressive is, how qicukly and precise they can dodge shit even when the whole screen is full of bullets. And these bullets don't have real patterns. Not as much as in bullet hell games at least. They don't provide some spot on the screen, where you tha you just have to go there and then you are save, but they rather just pop up much more dynamic.

But even in bullet hell games, its sometimes just unbelievable how people are able to dodge stuff. Not because they know their save spots where they have to go, but just because they controll their ship so damn precise that even when the whole screen is full of bullets spraying around, they just still dont get it. Being to controll this ship so damn precise, is whats really impressive about this, imo.

There is also a "conscious" aspect of twitch skill that slowly develops over time. I notice this mostly with hard bullet patterns that require lots of practice. What happens is that "getting better" involves figuring out which parts of the screen and/or how far in front of your character is optimal to focus on (even when shit is coming from all over the place in a mostly random fashion). Likewise, you become aware through experimentation that some paths through the bullets and/or dodging patterns are less risky than others, even though it'd be very hard to truly explain why by analyzing the pattern directly.
