Earthbound is a decent example. Only because that game is not rare just in demand. However, an early example from this thread stadium events is a perfect example of artificial price and an oligopoly. That game is bought and listed with high bin just to keep the artificial price high. Shill bidding is rampant also. The price of stadium events was reached solely by bin price and not actual market price. The price of stadium events should be much lower as few people want it. The few that do however will pay large sums for it and so you get the artificial price.

>> No.1990097

>>1990074
There is nothing artificial about any of that.
Oligopolies, monopolies, etc. all form naturally in the absence of regulation. Shill bidding, while dishonest and unethical, cannot truly make someone pay more than they are willing to pay, especially when talking about luxury goods.

You say it yourself, the few people who want a particular item are willing to pay a premium for it. That's not an artificial price, it's just the price.

As the other anon said, your opinion of whether it's "fine" or not to sell retro games and merch at "artificially inflated" prices doesn't matter. If people are willing to buy Earthbound, or Super Mario Bros NES for that matter, at $100 a cart, then the price IS set at $100 dollars.

Lets say a listing for SMB goes up. $100.
Doesn't sell the first time. Lister puts it up again. No takers. No takers for the next seven times. But on the tenth time, someone buys it at $100. It doesn't matter that it wasn't purchased the first ten times at $100, all that matters is it was purchased at $100. The market "value" of SMB is now $100.

It doesn't matter that it's unfair. It doesn't matter that you think it's bullshit, or that you think SMB is only "worth" x amount of money. What determines it's value of money is the avg of the amount it's bought at. And then you must consider that eBay essentially is a self-contained market. Though it's (technically) possible to find SMB at a flea market for $1 doesn't make the market value on ebay of SMB drop by half.
On eBay SMB is worth $100, at flea markets it's worth $1. Good luck finding that $1 game, too. There are hardly any grandmas selling their grown up son's old games anymore.

The thing is there is literally no "fair" or "real" value for old video games.

The thing is retro games have no standard value. They have no intrinsic worth, they have no value outside of what they subjectively mean to collectors. So what is a copy of Super Mario Bros. "worth"? Your guess is as good as mine, but saying it's worth $10 because you posit that as a 'fair' price for the game isn't any more legitimate than a reseller putting it up on ebay for $100. I'm more inclined to see the value of a particular game as what the the market determines it is worth, and that's by what it's sold at.

>> No.1990187

Artificial price is the same bullshit as "artificial difficulty", just made up tired buzzwords that carry no real weight. A big problem in the market is the sudden entry of uneducated buyers and people who likely spend beyond their means just to get something now. Sellers pick up on this, check what other sellers are selling for, and price the same. New uneducated buyers have no idea what games "should" be worth and price based on ebay asking prices or fluke sales at inflated prices. They don't wait, they don't research, they just buy. Some are likely convinced that they are getting in on the ground floor of a rare collectible market and pay out the ass for the appraisal of a supposedly educated third party (read: VGA graded games). There is no knowledgeable or otherwise veteran collector who would spend over $1k on some random VGA entombed prototype, but here we are. They know nothing of the market and allow the assurance of some nebulous but professional appearing "authority" to tell them what it is worth, and the more resellers who see this shit taking hold the more that will hop on the train (see: modern VGA graded games).

I think everyone should dread the day that VGA starts services for grading opened box games or cart only games. Just a matter of time now.

Just because I don't delude myself into fruitlessly praying for the price of retro games to go down, doesn't mean I'm the one buying $100 SMB carts off of eBay. I mostly buy my games at special thrift stores in my area. They are nonprofits for helping addicted folks and the homeless, so most of the staff and clientele don't really know/care about video games and just price every old game at $2.95. I'm quite lucky. Being aware of the market doesn't mean I buy into it.
>No, it's not. The one sucker who payed $100 now has his SMB, and isn't going to pay that again. The true instantaneous market value is unknowable.
No, you're presenting a scenario where only one copy of the game has ever been sold. Many copies of the game have been sold, at varying prices. Most of those SNES games are going to be what you all dub as "artifically inflated" prices at $50+. You have an average from the thousands of games that have been sold at those prices, and you take that figure as the market value of the game a given time. The price isn't going to suddenly drop overnight. No new copies of the game are going to flood stores and lower prices, so it's actually fairly stable. If anything, the only trend we'll see is a steady increase in price.

My story is this, I picked up a copy of Punisher for Genesis last year for $5. Forgot it was on the system, the arcade version was fun and I love my beat'em ups. It's a shoddy port and I always wonder what an SNES version would have been like.

Anyway, I looked it up on pricecharting and CIB was going for $190+. Cut to this year and CIB dropped to about $70-80 and within the last month or two it jumped up to $250+.

Not sure how many copies came out, but I hate seeing something go so low CIB and then jump immensely in price. If I were selling my copies it'd be less than $100, probably $75-80. I never liked games going above $100, especially cart only unless it was something like PDZ or Stadium Events where it is legit rare or had less than 50k copies sold.

No retard, Just no.
I get comics. The case actually helps protect them and with how comics ares collected and displayed it makes sense. A lot like preserving old books.
I get action figures. Again with how action figures are normally displayed it makes sense. You get the figure and all the parts nice and organized.

Toys. Hell no. No one displays toys like that. Throwing an old toy into a case kills its value.

Games. Supreme retardation. More harmful than good. I suspect collectors will smarten up for that reason and the reason that they're not bringing money.

If you support vga you may as well support throwing games into the trash. About all you accomplish when you neglect a game by locking it in a case.

>> No.1993871

>he thinks action figures aren't toys

Yes, it is I, not you, who is the retard.

>About all you accomplish when you neglect a game by locking it in a case.

Again, you don't have the mindset of a collector. They don't care about the gameplay or using it as intended. All they care about is getting a gem mint ten and keeping it that way forever, either for bragging rights or for a return on investment. You could argue with them til you're blue in the face but it'd be worthless because what they value is entirely different from what you do.

>> No.1993893

>There's a reason action figures are separated from toys.
And that reason is "protecting toy collectors' precious feelings." If anything, action figures make LESS sense to be put in boxes since a big part of their display appeal is the ability to pose them, which flies in the face of your earlier argument.

So you don't like VGA or their boxes. Good on you. But your reasons for disliking them, however valid, don't negate others' reasons for liking them. There's no right or wrong here, just different.

>a big part of their display appeal is the ability to pose them, which flies in the face of your earlier argument.
Depends on the figure entirely. Most of the graded stuff is boxed. The ones that aren't have the accessories displayed well so it's usually better for display purposes.
>Nothing lasts forever. Anything will degrade sooner or later, whether it's in a box or not. Putting it in a box protects it from other elements that aren't so inevitable.
It doesn't protect them from anything. The boxes are open to the elements and you can't maintain the game because it's in a damn box...

Its one thing to sit and post a game, in whatever condition and try and sell it for 125% of fair market value., its an entire other thing to ship your game, get it "graded" and "cased" by some neckbeard who grades it completely based on his opinion and feelings, and charges you anywhere from 25-50 bucks, artificially inflating your price, because you now have to add the cost of the case and to and from shipping.

There's your answer.

There is definitely something fishy going on. Just look at her other auctions. So many random things with a completely irrelevant photo of a Mickey pin or a Mario pin or whatever it is. The description in some of these items even explicitly tell the buyer to check photos, despite the photo having nothing to do with the item. The only non-"seller is up to no good" explanation for the games is that the seller is exploiting the make offer system and asking an exorbitant price and selling entirely on offers.

-If the seller falls of the face of the earth then ebay atomically sides with you.

He's got some cd box set that's listed in "good condition", but it looks better than that to me, maybe because I was on mobile. In any case, these are the types of things I look for when I deal with new sellers. If everything is across the board "very good" "excellent", "like new", that's kind of sketch. Dat iPod though... Gotcha Force is one I never understood how it went up in price so high. I remember seeing it in chain stores (EB/GS, etc) all the time. It's not even super popular like Chrono Trigger

>All Saturn games seem to be going throuigh the roof.

Son of a bitch. For the longest time the Saturn was in a really good zone where it was not too expensive for owners to collect for but also too expensive to scare new people aware. Oh well at least I got mine modded.
