I'm actually getting tired of seeing this every time something about Doom 2 is posted. We know. Level design is bad and SSG is overpowered (though wouldn't be if the levels were better designed - so really it's just some kinda shitty level design). Don't need to see it every time, or treat it like some black sheep we mustn't speak of. It's added a lot to keep the community alive and that's good enough. And the new monsters more than made up for any of its shortcomings.

well in the HUD you could probably just add a white/blue aura thing, and are you sure you can't attach a small light to the projectile (a bit like the megasphere one) as you're using GZdoom anyway

>>1976690

You mean like a GLDef? cus yeah I could do that, but I feel that'd be inconsistent seeing as nothing else uses lights, plus that'd take a bit of a hit on performance, AND I doubt it'd be that strikingly noticeable.

I already got the HUD element planned though, you can see in the webms I posted above there's a POW icon next to subweapons

I might have to bite the bullet and do without a visual effect. I'm thinking of a POW effect for the hatchet right now anyway, and I was thinking of you throw two hatchets, and one of them is bigger and rebounds off monsters whereas the normal size one doesn't

Doom 1 was a better horror game, because it had actual atmosphere. You could tell what a room was supposed to be.
Doom 2 felt like an arcade game more than anything, with a cheap, high-power weapon that you'd probably get after dying if you could pump extra coins in to resurrect. Instead of using the enemy variety to build tension just like the last game, they used it to make the first slaughtermaps.

Reposting this on the off chance the map author didn't see this the first time:
I played through it. They're nice maps, and detailed enough that it felt like I was playing a build engine game instead of idtech1, but not overly detailed like some maps are. I didn't mind the gameplay tweaks, except for the lost souls dodging rockets like they're fucking Neo. I wouldn't mind playing a couple more maps like this.

There are a few mis-aligned textures on the second map, as well as the exit on the first. See attached images 1-3 for examples. The circled imp in pic 4 is too close to the torch and can't move (UV difficulty), so you might want to move him just a little bit. The 5th image show a texture oddity when you raise the nukage after the archvile appears - you might want to change that to nukage fall texture or else alter the geometry to add a lip or slightly raised pipe or something to separate the red area from the green. Finally, the last picture (6) shows how the fence texture just cuts off. This looks odd, and would look better with a small post attached to it. Overall, a pretty solid pair of maps.

Also, the sliding glass doors on the first map make a silly sounding dripping sound that doesn't quite fit the tone of the map. I think a change might be an improvement.

>>1977296
No, the "weapon" on slot 8 is for healing your buddies in co-op. You heal by using the medikits and stimpacks in your inventory. Use medikits to stop bleeding, then stimpacks to restore lost HP. Do not use stimpacks when bleeding, or you'll just make things worse. You can also use berserk packs to recover a lot of health very quickly, but when it wears off you'll probably have a whole lot more wounds than you started with. Don't use a second berserk pack until the first one wears off, or you'll kill yourself.

Alright.

Aeons of Death basically throws together most non-military FPS weapons and enemies into one wad. If you ever wanted to destroy giant sumo wrestling demons with pump-action energy rocket launchers and kill Nazi cultists with a volcano cannon, this is the wad for you.

Russian Overkill offers 20+ cuhraaazy weapons. It's mostly for stress relief or beating up hard-ass wads.

As for level wads:

Winter's Fury really pushes the limits of GZDooM. It's beautiful and very arcade-y.

Unloved is like nearly every surreal/psychological horror film + DooM. People who say action + horror isn't a good fit are morons. It's super atmospheric and creepy, while offering you tons of demons to blast.

>I didn't mind the gameplay tweaks, except for the lost souls dodging rockets like they're fucking Neo.

They also have a lot less health to make up for it, makes fighting Pain Elementals a lot more fun imo. I'll try to make their movement a bit less spastic though.

>Also, the sliding glass doors on the first map make a silly sounding dripping sound that doesn't quite fit the tone of the map. I think a change might be an improvement.

At risk of falling for bait:

I am new here. This is my first post in a Doom thread. And you are automatically new if you can't punctuate correctly. "We have doom not quality" - that's a little difficult to understand.

The reason that people are angry at you amounts to a few things:

1: Why post "continued"? Why not just put your whole argument in one post? It honestly makes you look like you sorta sent the reply without really thinking about it - which doesn't really reflect well on you.

2. The character has an American accent because the game was made in America, presumably. Casablanca, despite being set in France, had no french accents, because it would've been grating to the ears.

3. Asian accents never sound good unless you're trying to create a stupid stereotype. There are good dubs, and - I say this as an idiotic weeaboo - none of them use thick Asian accents. Your argument might be valid if you suggested she spoke in Japanese; but the only work that were everyone had Asian accents was Mega Man 8. And that dub sucked.

3. Voice actors with any degree of talent are pretty hard to get. I would agree that we shouldn't accept bad things because refusing any content is bad; but this isn't actually objectively bad. That's just an opinion.

4. What makes you think /vr/ accepts this "because doom has bad things"? /vr/ has called out tons of wads on bullshit. When /vr/ sees a bad wad, they tear it apart. The fact that they're not doing that for this implies that most people probably like it to some degree.

5. Nobody wants this again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phitdexy3YI

In conclusion: if it annoys you so much, ask for an option to turn voices off, and please try to use better grammar.

My personal opinion is that it looks great, and the voices are entertaining, but I can understand how some people might not like them. To ask for a full re-dub? To imply /vr/ and the Doom community accepts bad things "because it's Doom"? See image.

UE4 guy, what exploration pieces were you expecting?

What I remember from the original Unreal was being amazed at the huge waterfall and wide open expanses......sometimes you really don't need to spice them up with monsters, in fact monsters can sometimes detract because they're a distraction.

>> No.1978141

That's the idea.

To make this all more Doom related, another plan is to make the bodies "crackle" like dooms. With ribs sticking out and some ragdoll physics on the body to make it flop about a bit. As opposed to just gibbing like Quake or Unreal. So it still has some semblance of anatomy rather than just being a flying torso/leg...

That's the idea. In the beginning it'd be less monsters more "this is so alien" and large vistas with nooks and crannies to explore... Sometimes with monsters in them to keep you on edge. Sometimes with items/journal... logs to keep you interested.

Later areas would likely have more monsters to plow through, but with larger monsters/better items/more interesting story bits in the nooks and crannies. Sort of an escalation that never hits sluaghterfest in the slighests.

they go 20 units per tic.

tics are well defined: they are 1/35 of a second, giving a conversion factor from tics to hours of 35*60*60. but the "real world" size of map units is up to interpretation.

my own is: the player can fit through gaps >=32 units wide. my bedroom door is two feet wide, and i estimate a large man carrying an outrageous amount of heavy ordnance would just about fit through it. therefore 32 units is 2 feet.

therefore, the conversion factor from units to miles is 16*3*1760. therefore the speed of a rocket in miles per hour is:

20 * (35*60*60) / (16*3*1760) ~= 29.8.

(incidentally the conversion factor seems very close to 1.5, i shall have to remember this instead of going through the derivation in my head every time this comes up...)

Also really fun fighting.

Dropped down the sludge pit, and then saw a bunch of revenants heading for me. I couldn't jump back up, so my instinct was to simply run through them for another place of cover, at which point I ran into a number of Mancubi, Zombies, Cacos and a Vore (arch-vile replacement), which had me promptly NOPE and turn back, choosing rather to try and drop the skellingtons with the rocketlauncher without getting to much splash damage on my clothes. They're placeholders, aye, and so is the pickup sprite. I threw them together at the last minute before releasing, and I'm really hoping I can get replacements for them down the line. Maybe something much more armored and bulky, to add to the weight of the punches (and emphasize that you're in armor).
I was hoping to use the RTC-3057 punching sprites (pic related), but there's only a small set of them, the readme very explicitly forbids their use, and I wasn't able to get in contact with the creators for permission. Oh well!

And yes, it was buffed quite dramatically. The energy consumed on usage was reduced, the soul reduction over time is reduced, the damage on both the attacks was buffed, the damage resistance on the armor was buffed, and all landed punches are guaranteed stuns.

I'm still not 100% happy with the defensive capabilities, but I'll have to figure something out later.

>>1979714

It will. And yeah, I'm quite proud of that as well--it took quite a bit of finagling, but I think it really sets things apart right away and lets you know what kind of ride you're in for.

>>1979723

The pistol is supposed to be the sniper weapon of the batch. Nearly-pinpoint accuracy and decent punch, for fighting enemies at a great distance away, but you're not the only one that's saying it's not too remarkable.

>> No.1979746

Another guy about the pistol here. The damage is probably at least high enough, but I wish I could fire as fast as I could click.

>> No.1979754

Well on the subject of the pistol I feel the accurate guns should be heavy hitters.

Like if that pistol was a magnum or something that would be cool.

It doesn't have to fire too fast(Sword's for rapid slashes anyways) but I think damage would be cool.

And I noticed the Iron Maiden mode being upgraded because I claimed it was useless recently and the changes are really nice.

What were you thinking for defensive capabiities though?
Just taking hits better?
Armor gauge going up?
Put up barriers at the cost of extra energy, cementing it with a defensive role by giving it a defensive ability?
Punch powers instead of slash powers?

>> No.1979783

>>1979746
>>1979754

Well, I'll see what I can do with the pistol.

As for defensive capabilities, one of the big things I wanted is for the player to have a slight cushion--considering the sheer aggression the Iron Maiden encourages, taking hits is going to be inevitable. So I wanted to have a system where the armor can take X amount of damage before the player starts getting hurt. Likewise, this will really help in slaughter scenarios, since there's always those massive fucking hordes of enemies where you're gonna need some shielding from damage.

I initially tried an expansion of the token system, where the Iron Maiden would have two spare "over-armor" tokens in the vein of over-life tokens, but testers quickly would get damaged twice, hop back and wait for the tokens to return, and then come back.
The problem with this regenerating armor system is...the complete opposite.
There's no real indication of when an attack is going to go through and damage you, and at the moment there's a whole shit-ton of attacks that can take off your armor and then damage you as well--plus, the constant regenerating doesn't fare as well in a slaughter environment when enemies keep constantly pounding at you, carving at you through the armor.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do just yet, but I'll think of an alternative method to do that cushion.

You know those soul orbs that fly from Kharon kills?
Make it boost armor a bit.

The bigger your target the bigger the armor meter gain.

Allow overcharging(Maybe 20-30% bonus) if you kill enough without losing the armor meter.

This would encourage bashing the shit out of everything and you get some armor repair for doing so.

Dad found this for me at a thrift store or something. Doom hackers guide from 1995, it even still has the included CD, looks like it was never really used. Of course, a lot of the book is pretty outdated now, but they have an interesting little chapter on good level design.

"Avoiding the 'Things Everywhere' Syndrome"

"I do not know why it happens, but immediately after finding out how to place monsters in a level, people learning to make new levels throw in 500 demons in episode 1, mission 1, and start playing. I did it, you have probably already one it, and I'm sure the guys at id did it when they finally got doom working.

The next question is usually 'But why not?' The answer is very simple. No Doom player in the world enjoys walking into a room with 50 monsters in it."

Suicide bombers are boring.
They're a dude holding a bomb, with a recycled Serious Sam voice-clip from a more notable and interesting enemy.

Revenants, on the other hand, hit numerous key notes at once.
4chan has long had a thing with skeletons, and the Revenant being a skeleton obviously carries over to that. One point.
The Revenant isn't just a demon, he's a cybernetic demon--a wired (and fucking giant) skeleton soaking in blood with twin rocket launchers. Instantly visually striking, and thus instantly memorable. Another point.
The Revenant is also a gigantic piece of shit in gameplay, thanks to its homing rockets that aim only to impregnate bitches and you're the closest thing around. They're gigantic fuckers, and with that they stay long cemented in the player's memory. Another point.
Finally, they're the slaughtermap's enemy of choice, and so the player often engages tons upon tons of them at once. Ohhhhhhhhh, and that builds a deep resentment for them very quickly. They very fast become the enemy you love to hate. Another point.

he was a well-regarded mapper around the turn of the century, when i first started following doom sites and forums online

Yeah, use UDMF and ACS, it's not that hard. Create an explosion in DECORATE (very easy, just get some graphics and make an actor that dies immediately and calls A_Explode) and then use ACS to spawn that around whatever you're blowing up. Then in the same thing use ACS to change the world how you want it changed.

If you've never used ACS before, my recommendation is to first use it to recreate some simple Doom tricks--make a script where a switch makes a lift work, or opens a door in the room or something. I'm following the directions for compiling zdoom for GNU/Linux from the zdoom wiki. I'm on a 64-bit machine, am using a build directory, and I have fmod inside of the source directory.

I used
cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DFMOD_LIBRARY=~/zdoom-2.7.1-src/fmodapi42636linux64/api/lib/libfmodex-4.26.36.so -DFMOD_INCLUDE_DIR=~/zdoom-2.7.1-src/fmodapi42636linux64/api/inc ..
to get the prepared files.

I'm having problems with fmod. This is the output from make.

Doom 1 and 2 kickstarted a massive FPS craze and generated a shitload of clones.
It's engine was revolutionary for the time and it was the defining FPS until Quake.

Doom 3 didn't do any of this and it didn't push the way forward for the genre.
It's just Half Life with monster closets and screens you can interact with.

Fair warning in advance, it's an unfinished map. I'm posting it up to test the "flow" of it over the details, so when that's good, then I can get into the serious details. No point in making an area look all nice and then people say it plays poorly.

Doom is great in it's standard form (even the gimped ports are fun), but it just keeps on giving, the core gameplay mechanics are solid and basic enough, and the modding & mapping is basic enough, that a large community is regularly providing good content for decades after it's release.

Maybe it will just stagnate like classic rock, playing the same songs on the radio for years.
Maybe today's retro stuff will become classic games, while today's modern will be retro.
I don't know.

At least Doom has made it this far. I can't think of any other game that's lasted this long. It gives me some hope that it will live on through the ages.

You got, what?

20 years?
Shit son if you're concerned about things that far off then maybe you need to reevaluate or just just enjoy things as they are now since it probably won't be around in the future

I prefer when you obtain the BFG in situations when you really need it
For example, in Hellbound's Map 13, when you get the BFG is a badass moment since after that, you get raided by a lot of demons, Hellbound with MSX is a much better experience

Not by this board's standards. Hopefully the mods aren't dumb enough that they're actually going to allow 6th gen and later discussion here. 5th gen was a stretch, and I'm still not entirely sure I agree with the Dreamcast being allowed. Remember that screencap of a mod saying that the reason 5th gen wasn't allowed originally was due to fear of Sony fanboys shitting the board up? Imagine what'll happen once PS2 and Xbox kids are allowed in.

I mean it's survived for 11 years and is practically mainstream now, I don't think 4chan will be going away for a long time.

Also I need that monster to happen.

the whole concept of this board doesn't scale

you can't lump together 1985, 1993, 2001 era stuff and call it all "retro", they're completely different

>> No.1984324

>>1984304
I dunno, the more time passes the more I look back on early 2000's stuff as being in sync with earlier games and being a natural outgrowth of 1990's video games. I really don't see it as a problem.
