What do you think about brandish?

>> No.1974050

It's not quite my cup of tea and the only reason why is because of the weird rotating. Even after you "get used" to it, it's still very jarring and I don't even know why they did it.

That much being said, I can't find much fault with the rest of the game's design. I find the combat and exploration to be solid. Also, I think the blonde on the cover is really hot and wish I knew her name so I could search boorus for her.

Scratch that. I just realized that I had played it before.

As >>1974050 said. The rotating is very odd, and can be a real pain in the ass to get used to because when it rotates, it acts as if you just entered a whole new screen, which can be disorienting and confusing.

>> No.1974063

Bizarre perspective kills it for me.
I can put up with a lot of weird shit in games but this one is just too much.

>> No.1974069

I could never get into it, and even though its not retro, the PSP remake is getting localized and I hear its better.

The perspective changing is just jarring as all hell though.

Great game marred by jarring view changes, that even after playing for awhile you don't ever really get used to.

It still commands a heavy pricetag too, despite its flaws at around 50 bucks. I've been considering buying a copy. Hows the second? Theres a dude in Canada selling Brandish, Brainlord and Brandish 2 (I'm going out on a limb here that its a repro since its NTSC-UC) for like 120 total.. a bit steep, but brandish is 50, and I've never seen a copy of brandish 2.

>> No.1974113

I never had any problems with the way the view rotate (it's just predictable 90 degree turns) and the fact that you have to look at things from multiple angles makes exploration more interesting.
It's a good game with plain graphics, a few meh bosses and sometimes tedious inventory management.

I've only played 2.

I can't even make it out of the starting dungeon, I'm convinced that doing it is impossible. You either die to traps or an enemy because they're significantly more powerful than you.

Also, the room rotating is horrible just like the other people have said.

I love what I've played on PC98 emulators. Wish they would get fantranslations. I'd rather not understand a word than play the SNES abominations. On PC98 with all the interface conveniences and map the rotating thing isn't that bad, hell, I even find it kind of charming.

In the US, one of my friends got a degree in animation and wants to be a children's animator. She's broke, so I told her, "do furry porn commissions, nobody has disposable income for weird shit like those people" but she's terrified if it ever got attached to her real name, she'd never be able to get work.

Like, I believe her, but that's fucking absurd!

I don't really entirely disagree, but the SNES had a much better sound-chip. That alone makes those Brandish ports better, considering you're listening to the same looping tune for ten levels straight. I actually prefer to SNES versions over all others simply because dat OST.

Yeah, I feel the same way about genesis tunes for the same reason. Ys III, for instance, was way better than it's SNES counterpart in that regard.

Also, that dude's youtube channel is a goldmine. Thanks.

I *love* Brandish! It's my favorite Falcom series up right there with Ys. It's pure, fun gameplay, and a direct feed to the old era of Falcom - where gameplay and dungeon-crawling were so well done they were their own reward. Brandish is such a beautifully-designed game. Seriously, there's almost nothing I dislike about it.

Brandish 1 is nowhere near as good as the second and third games, but it's still extremely great. I recall my initial reaction to the first Brandish game was something like "what the hell is that?", but once you get accustomed to the controls it becomes quite addictive. Perhaps the biggest problem with Brandish 1 is that the dungeon graphics are kind of dull and don't change very often - the fun, however, comes from exploring the maps (painting on your mini-map to mark pitfalls, hidden doors, etc), collecting items, and simply surviving to get to the next floor.

The SNES version of Brandish 1 had some problems, though - you need to switch to the map and back a lot due to the lack of an on-screen mini-map (every single other Brandish game has an on-screen mini-map), and the original games were developed for use with a mouse+keyboard, which caused some problems in the console versions (when managing your items for example, but it's still doable). Thankfully Koei learned from that mistake for the SNES port of Brandish 2, given that that game does have an on-screen mini-map (and therefore making it a bit more bearable than its prequel on the SNES). I have to say Falcom adapted Brandish very well to a console interface with the PSP remake of 1, which is simply excellent and I wholeheartedly recommend to pretty much everyone (yes, even the ones who couldn't "connect" with the PC-98/SNES/PC Engine CD version). You guys better support XSEED's English version when it comes out!

It is certainly an aquired taste, but once you get it - you can never get enough.

>>1977959

I also happen to be that channel's owner. Thanks for the words, Anon ;)

Oh, man. So much this. By maybe Ruins level 4 or 5 I was completely hooked. But the first couple of levels had me wondering what the crap I was doing with my life.

Also, was listening to some PC-98 versions of fav tunes, and holy shit does that version of Bleak Horizon blow the SNES counterpart away. Just strong. Overall made me realize how weak the drum lines are on the SNES, too. Damn, I may just be a convert after all.

>> No.1981115

I want to start with the PC-98 version myself, as having a minimap and other interface conveniences should help me learn better. Funny how both this and Koei's own games seem to play better on PC.

Gotta have the FM sound, too.

>> No.1982902

Just finished it yesterday. It's nice and simple in its mechanics. Also, the last boss has so much shit in the screen that the game goes to a crawl, in the SNES version. I'm beginning the second one and, boy, does it feel a lot quicker and less clunky. I don't really dig the interface though, one thing I have liked in the first one was the lack of menus on the screen, now I have to walk around with a bigass item menu and a minimap all the time.

Also, just a little correction here: both the hentai series that happens to share the same name and this game series (the artwork at the OP was done by Nobuteru Yūki, for instance) have nothing to do with each other. Heck, Alto Seneka - the creator of the H-manga - is a woman.

Brandish also happens to be one of my favorite H-manga series of all time. Still really disappointed with the disaster that were the H-OVAs.

>>1979686

The SNES soundtrack not only it sounds lame for SNES standards, it also sounds overall worse than the original PC-98 version. Brandish 2 SNES? Now THAT sounds SWEET for a SNES game! Some tracks are even better on that port (like Wood and Nucleus, the synth solo in Battle Point Version C is also hot), while there's some tracks wherein I still prefer the PC-98 originals (such as MASTER NINJA (in all caps) and Gadobadorrer).

Now everyone go listen to this metal arrangement of Nucleus. RULES. http://youtu.be/IsaTcA4eQRI

Also: have you heard the PSP arrange of Cave (i.e. the real name of "Bleak Horizon" - I have no idea from where those names actually emerged from)? It's a bit of a departure from the original, but my god it sounds GLORIOUS. http://youtu.be/FZnyXSwSwC0

>>1982902

They actually made the final boss battle harder and WAY more interesting in the PSP remake. And dat Gado Bistalle arrange with Tradition being incorporated into the track, jesus christ that was fucking PERFECT.

Enjoy Brandish 2, Anon, even though you're playing the SFC version*. Such a fantastic game!

*I don't blame you for that, though - I've already played Brandish 2 SFC TWICE and plan to play the original PC-98 one of these days! It's just that the PC-98 has more areas (Koei removed about 18 floors from the original game), so I'm supremely excited to play that one.

Her Japanese name is definitely "Dora Doran" (ドーラ・ドロン), albeit for some weird reason Falcom transliterates it as "Dela Delon". XSEED will use Dela Delon for the English release of the PSP remake - totally fine by me, as I think it sounds *sexier* in English than "Dora Doran".

I haven't played much of it, but what I did play felt exactly like Brandish should - just in an isometric view. The game itself is actually pretty cool - here's a gameplay video I did (with sound!): http://youtu.be/bQoSGGQWxdk

The soundtrack is also pretty good too - just don't expect anything remotely on par with Brandish 2 and 3 levels of greatness in that regard. You can check the whole thing on my YouTube channel as well.

Regarding the Japanese fanbase's thoughts: from what I know, apparently Japanese fans really disliked the sudden change of Brandish VT - the visual style and camera were different, and there was no more Ares and Dela anymore. And without all of that, a lot of people just couldn't consider it a true Brandish game - much like some Japanese fans have trouble accepting Ys Origin as a real Ys game because of the lack of Adol as the protagonist (Japanese Ys fans didn't take kindly to an Ys game without him, and some have even went as far as to pretend the game doesn't even exist - not counting it as official canon).

The translation project has been resurrected this Summer: http://seldane.proboards.com/post/189137/thread - it is being translated by the guy who was working on The Dark Revenant, after XSEED announced the official release.
