Are you the first or the second guy?
Because "requires help to jump" is not quite right, and "cannot carry as many weapons" is just outright wrong.

Anyways. HMG is mediocre, new announcer is pretty balls I agree, a lot of gamemodes are pretty unchanged and you can join classic without paying, respawn timers are ok because it's impossible to time shit with an uncoordinated team (a.k.a pubs)/clusterfuck like FFA (who picked up what and when? it's not like armors and health show in the model like the powerups).

They function the same, but GZDoom has an opengl renderer so things look better with mouselook when looking up or down. ZDoom looks closer to how the game originally looked. Some mods require GZDoom.

Honestly though for your first playthrough I would play in Chocolate Doom or PrBoom+. You can configure screen resolutions through the included chocolate-doom.cfg and prboom-plus.cfg, respectively. Both open as .txt files. You can configure controls and mouselook through chocolate-doom-setup.exe and in-game, respectively.

At the very least I would play through the original iwads for the first time with Doom compatibility settings in ZDoom and without vertical mouselook.

I don't understand, why would DPS matter in Deathmatch?

In Doom deathmatch the most useful weapon is the Super Shotgun, which has at least lower DPS than the rocket launcher.

I feel that burst is more important unless we're straight up talking about the Lightning Gun in Quake and pretty much only that.

Hell just having fast rockets is a lot for something like Doom.

Play in UV, look for textures that don't match the ones around them or otherwise have slight differences from ones around them. If there's an area you can't get to but there is obviously a way there (like an item sitting there) then check the walls near there or in other areas that border that area. Check alcoves--being inset from the surrounding area counts as being different from the surrounding area. Listen for noises of things raising or lowering when you walk past certain areas.

Is Plutonia the best wad ever made for Doom?

Last time I played this thing I was like 14 or 15, way back in 2000. I only ever played both episodes of Final Doom once and never returned. It seems I have forgotten how ridiculously awesome this fucking wad is. Doom II was my favourite but this blows it, and many other FPS's, out of the water.

The gameplay is just so ridiculously fucking good. The guy who made this shit really knows how to bring it out (I'm playing on UV, of course). Doom always felt sorta slow to me and I used the shotgun way too much but in Plutonia I'm using all the main weapons. Also my DEFAULT weapon whenever heading into a new area in this wad is the plasma rifle because of how unpredictable it is. At any given moment a fucktonne of monsters can be unleashed at you so to be ready for them I have the plasma equipped. That's so different to how I played Doom/Doom II which were just mostly shotgun gameplay and it hardly mattered what weapon you used for the most part.

Yeah, I really fucking love Plutonia. It's pure FPS sex. Are there any megawads better than this? I find it so unlikely based on the gameplay of how this guy uses his monsters along with the level design. It's fucking incredible!

I'm on Slayer now, not many maps to go but loving every step.

>> No.1971220

What difficulty do you guys play on? Do you have fast monsters on?

>> No.1971226

>>1971208
I personally think that Speed of Doom is the pinnacle of megawads. Difficulty progression pretty good, maps complex but not idiotically so, absolutely superb aesthetics especially that MAP31 goddamn and some pretty neat ideas in maps that don't come off as gimmicky like the Core and MAP30.
As for not megawads, Deus Vult 2 holds the crown for me, but over all wads SoD is my favourite.

>stick to your Shotgun at middle to close range, send Rockets and Chaingun bullets if they're middle to long range
>use your Chaingun to blast off barrels as you open doors or kill Cacodemons by abusing their pain chance
>learn to use plasma gun it's the best weapon you have against Barons and bigger things like Cyberdemon and Mastermind until you find BFG by luck
>taking cover and listening will get your ass saved from 90% of ambushes. save often.
>learn to run through gaps to drop down to the lower level platforms
>if you have the computer area map of a level read it often (default: tab button)

doom2:
>grab the Rocket Launcher at level1 from the secret door
>grab the Super Shotgun at level2 (biggest design mistake in game imo, SSG is something really powerful.)
>stick to your Super Shotgun and Rocket Launcher to kill everything and forget Plasma Gun ever existed.
>there are plenty of BFG pickups scattered around first one being in level8 (unless you cheat and find multiplayer exit of level7), second is at level13.

>you can grab the SSG in a secret at level2 with shitload of barons and hell knights around it, or you can grab it at the level3
>Game pace is nothing different than Doom2, guess you can find yourself using BFG abit more often that's it.

Why there arent more retro inspired shooters being made nowadays is beyond me and thats what brutal doom feels like to me. A new spin on my childhood favorite.

When I played doom as a kid I really did anticipate all enemies would be 2D for years and years to come and only get bigger, sharper and more detailed and they skipped over that whole idea as soon as it was technologically possible.

I feel like zdoom and brutal capture the FEEL of doom soley because it enhances the main aspects within the confines of the engine. Every other enhancement can go screw for all I care I just want the textures to be smooth.

I looked at it, but I don't know much about Doom, I was more of a Quake-HL1 guy. Was going to have the player play as a demonica soldier, demons would either be mobs in game or function as weapons when "equipped" by the player -- using one would simply use an ability innate to that demon, or give a passive ability based on which one it is (Such as an HP bonus or Void Fire, etc). Defeated demons would have a chance to surrender instead and join you, sort of dropping like a world item.

Of course, I think a lot of people would just be fine with replacing the base demons in doom with SMT ones.

The architecture is nothing remarkable, and enemy encounters almost strictly consist of monster closets and teleport ambushes. Sometimes it even arbitrarily teleports the player to put them in said ambushes.

BD still has some balance problems, I feel weapons above rocket launcher are too weak relative to the ssg, the visual occlusion effects while fightining mancubuses are too, too too annoying. Also I'd consider removing reloading from the plasma rifle. But whatever, I realize balancing isn't so easy. I fucking love all the new enemies abilities and behavior and increased speed

It's okay to put monsters in secrets as long as;
>it carries player to oversee a large view to be advantageous via teleport or elevators. Elevators (or simply pigeon holes around elevators), and timed triggers are a good way to hide important items in a map too.
>it gives player invulnerability sphere or megasphere. Hide it well, or balance it with some monster triggers
>it grants player a critic item like Backpack or Super Shotgun early. If you wanna make a secret related to Radiation Suit or Light Amplificator, be sure add some cover points.
>it allows player to skip a larger fight where he has small possibilities of hiding or take cover. Avoiding a big fight is cool but taking the path around and blasting the barrels behind them would be more fun
Doom2 level 10 comes to mind where we find a secret with a few demons inside and it teleports us to a small room with invulnerability inside with end of level Cyberdemon right front of us.
Doom2 level20 comes to mind where I always drop down from the right of the start climb the elevators and take white teleporter in a secret door at the end to telefrag the Pain Elemental.
TNT level2, requires us to backtrack to get a Soulsphere and gives us the Super Shotgun in a room with full of Barons and Knights.
or Plutonia level 22, where we open a secret with a teleport in but when we step in, it triggers the archvile on top of a pillar to elevate it down with a Megasphere behind it.

Just because it's secret doesn't mean that it should be a free reward.
Fighting for a BFG, or fighting after getting a BFG is fine as long as I get to keep said BFG and there's some cells and shit.

Applies to any gun really.

If there is a secret I hate because it has monsters then chances are the whole map suffers from such a problem.

It feels like it's just better to slash dudes with the sword or to shoot with regular guns.

The armor regeneration after it goes away entirely should be a little faster during the invincible period, otherwise it kind of loses it's purpose of being armor since it only takes one or two hits before you take real damage again.

Also the forward special while in Iron Maiden should be a huge ass punch with a big forward blast instead of a sword wave from an awkward looking forward round house kick. Or at least a spin like the side special

People who hate change hate Zandronum because it lets you jump, duck, and mouselook. Their one good point (and it's a very good point), is that those cool new features break the design flow of the original levels. So you basically have to exercise restraint if you want to play the game as intended.

People hate Brutal Doom because I guess the creator is a douchebag, but I'm not sure what he did to make people think so. I think he ripped off other peoples' work without giving due credit or something. Then other people hate Brutal because it's too violent, kinda like how soccer moms and politicians hated vanilla Doom in the 90s for being too violent. It also effects level flow, everything does more damage (to you and the enemies), making it feel like "Doom on fast-forward." It's too fast paced for some gamers.

Well, you're missing one thing on the reasons why people hate Brootal Duuuum.

Specifically, because a vast tidal wave of little edgefags have arrived, all on the shoulders of well-meaning friends who shared a copy of Z& and a batch script to play le BROOTAL DOOM with them.
Thus, all these newbs run around complaining that these mods don't work with their BRUDL DUUM, and act like BRUDL DUUM is the only available way to play Doom, or the best way to play Doom, or the way Doom was intended to be.
All of those statements are false. Brutal is not the "best" way to play because there is no "best" way. It is not the way Doom 1 or 2 was intended to be, no matter how much Doom 4 borrows from it. And it is not the only way to play the game, it's just the only way these newfags know of.

>Also, why do you guys hate Brutal Doom?
I for one don't. As far as I know, Mark didn't credit those people because he doesn't know anything about them, perhaps he got some of his sources from Realm667 or.. dunno there could be some extra struggle between Mark and those artists and it doesn't really affect me in the least.

In the end Mark put new things to his mod developed it without listening to his raving fans and it stood out as one solid doom mod. He credited everything like he promised but then people started to bash the mod for being "too violent ewww, too much of a clusterfuck in the code ewwww" and shit like that.
If I was Mark, I'd pick a "fuck all" option, and drop it from the development; but he chose to stay and tell them they're all jealous of his work, and... I do believe he was right up to a point.

Everytime he tried to fix something, people tried to stir up shit. Latest example of that he being asking Demonsteele's developer about his sprite work in Demonsteele, and /vr/doom filled with trolls who tried to stir up shit again and bash Brutal Doom again.

Well... I finished Doom 2 and TNT (and last 10 levels of Plutonia) in the second hardest skill and... it was not really a walk in the park.
Mouselook, that starter kit Assault Rifle and headshots give you a great punch but when you play it, you'll realize they come out from ambushes more quickly and evade your shots whenever they can (second hardest difficulty allows them to move faster) and that low damage is needed to give player a fighting chance.

Btw... I tried it just now, loaded the e2m8: Tower of Babel on the second hardest difficulty withOUT Sperg Edition on Broodl Doom. Cyberdemon shot me in the stomach and it took away 60 damage (brought me down to 140 from 200/200), if my eyes didn't wrong me. It takes like 10 or so rocket headshots to bring it down. Which is not really a hard task with 2 supercharges laying around.

I'm also a 1986 fag and grew up with Doom. I'm one of the people saying Brutal Doom is a really cool mod, I feel like it brings back the visceral "oh wow this is violent, I almost feel bad for playing it" feeling that I had when I first played Doom in the '90s. It also makes the game require better twitch reflexes that you would need in deathmatch games, but didn't need in Vanilla Doom IMO. It lets you make use of the fact that you've probably been playing competitive shooters for a couple decades.

Screams are annoying, I'll give you that. The gore is fun and satisfying.

>modern elements
Which you don't even have to use. I've never used ironsights in BD. I don't care that it has reloading, that only adds another element of ammo management to it.

I also enjoy its snappier feel. There is no more input lag in the weapon firing for instance. It's also faster and in general the gunplay feels tighter.

Truthfully, I don't think BD is objectively better or worse than the original. It's a good variation to it however and I enjoy playing it. You should grow up and not get upset that other people have different opinions to you on the internet. Accepting different viewpoints is a sign of maturity anon. Good luck.

What is it that makes some of Dukes levels so appealing?

I think other than the extra features and character of Build games, it's that the levels represent actual places.....not realistically made but give the sort of "impression" of one.

There are other factors too but I can't quite place them, they're on the tip of my tongue.

>> No.1974493

>>1974481
- the perfect balance between realism and the irrealistic conceptual level design of Doom-era FPS
- the interactivity
- the fact that the majority of levels are built to play well both in SP and DM, which result in interconnected level design with the right amount of exploration and often side paths and several ways to get from point A to point B (like vents, etc)
- the humour and other small details which give life to levels
- the secret places which often are whole rooms which are rewarding to find not just because they hold items but because they look good and are funny (like the Startrek ship or the shooting gallery for postmen to train against dogs, finding characters like Doomguy, Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker etc)
- all the cool effects like explosions, earthquakes, moving sectors; and of course Build's Sector Over Sector which give a real sense of 3D.
- the Duke quotes and ambiant sounds for the final touch of life to the levels

>> No.1974497

>>1974493
Also
- the fact that every level is playable from a pistol start (on skill Normal without having to find secret places and on Hard you need to know at least a few secret places, which you would if you played on hard so it makes sense) which means that you can just warp to any level and play it, so it contributes to the arcade orientation centered on pure fun

>> No.1974519

>>1974481
I was about to get a bit miffed at you but then I realized I read what you said wrong.

I thought you wrote appalling.

My favorite thing about Duke's levels is how the structure can change due to explosions or whatever.
I also like the vertical build to them.

And maybe something besides Tripmines.

>> No.1974525

>>1974520
The tripmine is very useful :
- in DM, especially with sloped grounds because if you place a tripmine while crouched on a sloped ground it will be invisible
- to explode cracks (if you want to save ammo for other explosives and if you're out of ammo)
- very useful in Damn I'm Good because you need to get rid of corpses so that enemies don't respawn

They are also often used to place traps in levels but that's not a player use.

and really against enemies they can be very useful, most people just never think about it.

>> No.1974526

>>1974525
I feel the first thing is a glitch and that was my primary use for it.

Never really had issues with lack of explosives.
After all, RPG/Devastator/Pipe Bombs should really be more than enough. A third of Duke's weaponry is explosives.

This isn't counting explosive shells if we're talking 64.

Didn't think of using it on Damn I'm Good like that. I just bumrushed to the end of levels as best as I could.

I still feel it's one of Duke's more lackluster weapons available.

>> No.1974527

>>1974493
>- the fact that the majority of levels are built to play well both in SP and DM

I don't think duke plays so well at all. Might be a controversial opinion but past the initial impact of the level design itself, the battles in duke are extremely lackluster compared to better fpses like doom, doom 2, quake, serious sam, and so on

>> No.1974530

Duke is some my favourite FPS DM. But whether or not it's good in DM isn't really my point, my point was that the fact that levels were built with both SP and DM in mind has a huge impact on SP. It's something that amateur mappers often forget, EVEN those that make 'classic style' maps.

but it's much easier to find the secret door in the back of the safe platform, which you will naturally blunder onto to get out of the lava (picture 2, left side).

Different Anon here:
>1) How old were you and what year did you first play Doom?
I was born 92', and I think I first played Doom when I was 6 or 7 years old.
I remember I thought it was the coolest shit, and also that it was the spookiest shit, it was dark and the monsters were photorealistic.
I think I liked it so much because of the same reason I liked Diablo, it was really dark and violent. I guess I was an edgy kid.

>2) What are your 10 favourite first person shooters of all time? (including both retro and non-retro)
Hm, I always had trouble outright ranking favorites like that, but I'll give it a shot, in alphabetical order:
Doom (from Doom 1 to Final Doom)
Doom 3 (despite it's flaws)
Fallout: New Vegas (also despite it's flaws)
Far Cry 3
Goldeneye 64
Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Quake 2
Return To Castle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein 09'

I still love Doom (obviously because I'm still here), and even though I've been spoiled rotten by fancy modern mods, I will never deny that classic vanilla Doom is still really fun, even if it's one of the shitty Gameboy Advance ports, or the BFG Edition for the PS3. Fags will say nostalgia goggles, but no, Doom was, and still is, genuinely a fun game.
I play mainly on UV and sometimes on HMP.

Holy shit the level design in duke e2m1 is fucking awful.

Lots of narrow passages, some linked to eachother, some not, no open areas, very poor flow

E1 was a gazillion times better, just looked up the designer and it was the same guy who did much of E1 so I guess this was just a bad day for him.

Blood has nothing and probably never will.

Shadow Warrior has two sourceports, SWP and Redux (the Steam version). Both have their pros and their cons. The makers of EDuke32 are currently making an "eduke" version of SW. No, other Build games don't directly run in EDuke32, because EDuke32 is based on Duke3D's sourcecode, and even though each Build game is based on Build (duh) their code is vastly different.
I personally use DOSbox because it's still the best way to play SW imo.

If you want improved mouse control, you can install and configure bMouse with the DOS versions. After proper configuration I found it works really well with both Blood and SW, however I found that it sucks with DN3D.

Don't even think about BloodCM and eRampage. They're not sourceports (even though eRampage claims to be... even though RR's sourcecode was never released...) they are recreations of the games using EDuke32, which means by definition tons of behaviour will be off even if the programmers do a good job (and they don't)

Fucking hell, Map 10 of Buttsex2 was fun as all hell, probably my favorite so far, it had an oppressive and... "moist" or... "wet" atmosphere? I don't know how to describe it, like the dark damp dungeon it was. Some clever ambushes, I was walking down a hallway, and the door in front of me slammed shut, out of the walls comes zombies, cacodemons and skeletons, I start fighting with the shotgun, drop the revenant after ducking his rocket, drop a caco, and most zombies before the shotgun is empty, no time to reload, I wheel around and lay down a swath of fire with my rifle, repeated short bursts into the remaining cacos, at which point the batteries in my mouse died.

This was in a somewhat cramped space so I had no option but to pause and then switch batteries.

And then later, another ambush, LOTS of cacodemons, another skeleton, a mancubus, the rifle doesn't cut it here, have to use the minigun, many close calls. At first I was "Shit this isn't fun!" but then I was "Wait a minute, YES IT IS!", the ambushes were really fun on this map, it was a large and sort of gloomy map, and it was barrels of fun!

In layman's terms, yes.
In more technical terms, what it does is does a roundabout check of everyone's latency, averages it out, and actually makes it a little bit lower. It puts everyone on an equal playing field.

Unfortunately it still boils down to "one person is lagging, let's nerf everyone else's connection to accommodate him".

I played through it. They're nice maps, and detailed enough that it felt like I was playing a build engine game instead of idtech1, but not overly detailed like some maps are. I didn't mind the gameplay tweaks, except for the lost souls dodging rockets like they're fucking Neo. I wouldn't mind playing a couple more maps like this.

There are a few mis-aligned textures on the second map, as well as the exit on the first. See attached images 1-3 for examples. The circled imp in pic 4 is too close to the torch and can't move (UV difficulty), so you might want to move him just a little bit. The 5th image show a texture oddity when you raise the nukage after the archvile appears - you might want to change that to nukage fall texture or else alter the geometry to add a lip or slightly raised pipe or something to separate the red area from the green. Finally, the last picture (6) shows how the fence texture just cuts off. This looks odd, and would look better with a small post attached to it. Overall, a pretty solid pair of maps.

Also, the sliding glass doors on the first map make a silly sounding dripping sound that doesn't quite fit the tone of the map. I think a change might be an improvement.

As for where they'll be, they'll be in:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Steam\SteamApps\common\Quake Live\<yoursteamID>\baseq3\demos for the Steam ver. or

1994, I was 7.

Doom (duh)
Unreal / UT99
Half Life 2 (and 1, but 2 had better gameplay imo)
Left 4 Dead 2
Battlefield BC2 / BF3 - though I don't play either much anymore
System Shock 2
Stalker
FEAR
Day of Defeat (or DoD:S)

Doom, obviously.
Duke Nukem 3D

System shock 1/2
Quake 2I just love the weapon designs.
