The best Mario Kart game to date

>> No.1942243

Best roster, shit gameplay.

Very different to every other MK game, since they used MK64 as the prototype for all the rest; even on GBA. It's far more of a classic racer than the rest, I think.

Why is it that Super Mario Kart had 2-player but F-Zero didn't? I thought it was because the 3D is really mode 7, but then how does it work for SMK?

>>1942226
I always liked double dash

>> No.1942309

>>1942251
SMK wasn't a launch title.

Yeah but how, on a technical level, did they do it? Mode 7 is for background only, I thought. SMK has P1 and P2's background scaling independently, so how did they do it? Apparently it had a DSP-1 chip for "advanced mode 7", but that still doesn't sound like it would let them do it. Anyone know?

the best one to get motion sickness? yeah no doubts

Quite definitely, yes.

That soundtrack tho. So fuckin' rad.

I love that game, but I prefer super circuit for the GBA.

In my experience the 64 version has the best multiplayer. Falling between areas of the track on levels like Choco Mountain and Wario Stadium really elevated it.

>> No.1942862

double dash has the best mechanics and engine imo. but thats not retro enough.

super mario kart has the best tracks between itself and 64

>> No.1942889

SMK was the most fun, but Mario Kart 64 had the best multiplayer.

Super Mario Kart
Mario Kart 64
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart Super Circuit
Mario Kart DS
Mario Kart Wii
Mario Kart Double Dash

Never played 8.

Yep. I really don't know why so many people prefer MK64.

>> No.1942897

Super Mario Kart has the best mechanics in the series by far.

Because it's better you silly autist.

Because their parents wouldn't let them have a PSX or Saturn because uuuuuuhhh blood and violence, and they were too young for a Super NES.

>> No.1942909

MK64 doesn't even have coins. Coins that make you go faster makes perfect sense for a Mario racing game and removing them does nothing but take away from the gameplay.

>> No.1942917

Whatever SMK has over SM64 mechanics-wise is nullified by SM64 simply being on better hardware. The world is so much more satisfying to drive around in than SMK's flat imitation of 3D space.

>removing them does nothing but take away from the gameplay.
no it actually adds to it since you don't have to worry about coin collecting and focus on actually racing especially for the heavyweights since the characters with higher acceleration snatch up all the coins first boosting their speed while everyone else is still gimped

>> No.1942940

I don't want to get too non-retro here, but is anybody else bothered by the really enclosed feeling of the more modern Mario Karts?

Any minor deviation from the course means Lakitu is instantly grabbing you. The game seems designed with preventing glitches in mind above basically anything else. You can no longer jump between segments of the track in the way you could with Super or 64. It makes the games feel very sterile.

My guess is the DSP-1 "hijacks" the SNES's mode 7 hardware registers so they're loaded with new values every scanline. On an old CRT, the TV draws the top row of pixels first and works its way down. (Every horizontal row of pixels is called a scanline). If you time your code properly, you can change graphical registers every scanline to pull off some serious visual trickery (you know those "wavy" effects you tend to see in retro games? That's generally how they're done). The DSP-1 might simply aid in timing it.

>> No.1943435

It's pretty good but 8 is the best. I grew up with all of em too.

>implying double dash was worse
>implying only 2 p co op is better
>implying having only half the screen is better in single player
