CRT filters are far from perfect, but they're about the only decent filters out there. At least it's just trying to emulate a certain kind of display rather than trying to make the game look like something it's not.

It's like when people add a ton of post-processing to Skyrim to try and make it look good. Blurring and distorting the image isn't going to change what the game actually looks like, it just makes the image blurred and distorted.

The only way I killed him my first time was he got too close and I meatbone slash'd him as a samurai, instantly killing him. Metal Gear has the most embarrassing casual filters:
>pit traps
>gas rooms
>claymores
>torture
>snare traps
>mantis
>getting stomped by Metal Gear

But still, Kojima, how can you do that to a badass?! ._.

The problem isn't learning the pattern.
The problem is, getting to the part where you have to learn the pattern is so fucking difficult, by the time you get there, you're probably low on health and extra lives. You get thrown in there in a part where you need to know the pattern to survive, but if you make a mistake you have to go back and to the previous parts of the stage all over again, and they are pretty fucking hard. This part comes AFTER a boss fight, if you remember well. By the time you had enough time to learn the pattern well, you probably have spent hours retrying the previous part of the stage.

I agree. Also note that from 240->1080 is 4.5x scale, it's just that rounding error shits on the parade, putting moire patterns into the filter when you fill the screen. I can get a very nice looking filter going at 1920x1440 on my CRT monitor.

There was nowhere else in the game that had you hold up and down to move platforms in that manner.

Add to this the fact that you can VERY NEARLY make it solely with jumping alone, and it's no wonder that the barrel stumped a lot of people.

It requires you to do something that it has never asked you to do before and will never ask you to do again, with no prompting that its doing so. Hell, when I ran into it as a kid I thought I had fallen into one of Robotnik's diabolical speed traps.
