Are there any other games like D&D Shadow over Mystara, or Knights of the Round where it's like a sidescrolling beat em up with levelling and item inventories and shit? Co-op a must.

I really liked D&D:SoM, the spritework was well done and choosing paths and stuff was a lot of fun. But there's only so many times I can replay it. But yeah, any ideas for awesome Arcade games along those lines? Any system/region is fine, I have trouble emulating mame sometimes.

You may or may not enjoy King of Dragons

There's a few along with some with no level ups at all.
Dark Seal 1 and 2, being one such case.

I've been playing a lot of Gaiapolis lately, an arcade-exclusive beat-'em-up from Konami featuring character designs from Shuzilow HA (the TwinBee guy). It's actually overhead action game, so it's much closer to something like Legend of Valkyrie than Tower of Doom, but the combat system feels like a beat-'em-up.

>> No.1935673

Honestly, not /vr/ but you would LOVE Dragon's Crown for PS3/vita. It was made by one of the main dudes behind D&D arcade(George Kamitani) after he left Capcom and is sorta like his dream RPG beat em up he never got to make.

>> No.1935714

I'm gonna buck the trend a bit and try to give you some overlooked gems. I may be stretching things a bit as far as what you're looking for, as some of them, it's been so long since I've played, I can't remember if they EXACTLY fit the bill.

Gauntlet Legends is an obvious one, just thought I'd throw that out there.
Arabian Fight is a beat-em-up with Sinbad worked into the cast. Interesting setup, but it might not have inventory or leveling(hard to run on emulator...the video system is unique).
Arabian Magic does have an inventory, but not leveling. This time, it's generic Arabian trope, but the depth of combos lends it some replayability if you're into that sort of thing.
Dungeon Magic is TOTALLY your thing! Leveling, inventory, diverse party, the only real difference between it and D&D is the view(DM is angled top-down view). I'd say go with this first from my list.
Finally, not /vr/, but Crystal of the Kings is a nifty game you might want to look at.

Hope something satisfies your craving here...

>>1935637
Okay I had no idea what Dark Seal was until I found it was called Wizard Fire in NA. Will give it a shot!

>>1935671
This looks great! It doesn't have to be a side scroller or anything, just a good co-op game, I'm being bugged to find new shit since we've played everything we have to death.

>>1935673
I'd agree, but no PS3! We stop at PS2 except for nintendo consoles

>>1935714
Much appreciated anon!
We play the shit out of Gauntlet on the Dreamcast.
Never emulated the SS32 before [did want to try the trackball sonic game, is that even possible though?] Honestly, I'm not that great at emulating MAME either, but I've gotten a few games to work [Mega Man Power Battles/TMNT/Simpsons/KOTR/D&D etc] I just get jammed occasionally I guess I don't have the right CHDs or Bios' something.
>>1935754 Dungeon Magic does totally seem like something we'd dig, will be checking that out definitely!
And Crystal of the Kings despite the graphics does seem intriguing!

Seriously, thanks for all the recommendations guys, I've mostly been a console emulator, so I've yet to really crack into the MAME thing, bar a few SHMUPS for me, and the odd TMNT/Simpsons game my friends wanted to play. Looking forward to trying these!

If there are multiple versions of a ROM for each region you'll still have to download the parent ROM for the game to work. Think of them as language packs. This usually just applies to arcade games though

okay son you want to know about mame? there is always a parent rom that may have a completely different name like Dark Seal in japan is Gate of Doom in the US. so you need the parent rom dark seal and then to play the US version you need the gate of doom rom as well.

>>1935754
This is on taito legends 2 for PS2 which has TONS of awesome games on it. thanks for posting that though it reminded me of Dark Seal/Gate of Doom and Dark Seal 2/Wizard Fire both isometric action games similar to dungeon magic but not as beat em up. OP you should definitely try them too.

Other games I recommend
Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder (especially if you though SoM looked nice)
Night Slashers - just a regular beat em up with an awesome theme and great graphics though.
Tecmo Knight/WildFang - A beat em up where you control different monsters you can ride a tiger, a giant, or a dragon and switch between them sometimes. Super gory and lots of fun.

The game allows you to upgrade your spells and various stats. It has multiple endings. I think something like 45 unlockable characters for the Arena. They re-released it for XBLA with a bunch of cool upgrades too!
