Can we get a Wario Land 1-3 thread up in here?

All the Smash bros. talk on /v/ is making me feel sad I need some proper Wario in my life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH70CwY__Ms
I played through the Wario Land series for the first time this year and holy hell, I really missed out the first time around. Being a Wario fan in the late 90's must have been so great, so many back-to-back releases of wonderful games.

Especially Wario Land 3, my undisputed favorite Wario Land, I always loved the ending especially. Wario goes out the way to get a shit ton of treasure and inadvertently saves a bunch of people by killing a clown who would have gotten away with his plan if not for betraying Wario at the last second.

Yeah. It's all a great game. And that music is feely, too. The music boxes were a great idea in the game, as was the little island in the glass.

There's a weird sense of loneliness at times, especially when you're the only human, non enemy there.

It's probably pointless comparing the first one to 2 and forward. SML3 was great on its own merits, at the very least sharing the peak of the original GB catalog; I remember I loved its slow and deliberate nearly zero-inertia controls; but as great as it may be, it's kind of a transitional title on the way to the actual Wario franchise.
WL2 I got with my Game Boy Color back then, and it blew my mind (hadn't read anything about it, and I thought it would be like the first one); it was the first deconstructive-ish platformer I'd ever played, years before just-add-gimmick examples started popping up everywhere. The third one was just bigger and better, and the fourth was... all right, though the visual supercharging overshadowed any big gameplay tweaks.

Never played the Virtual Boy one; wish they'd published it for the 3DS virtual console, but they probably just want to bury everything related to that thing.

I'm more concerned with how Wario has been inconsistent in his size. In SML2, it's implied that Wario was big thanks to a Super Mushroom, but in Mario & Wario, he's still Bane-sized. Some of the comics also draw him Xbox huge.

I guess Nintendo decided that having what's essentially a boss character (Mario needs to be hit 3 times to die and only two attacks, Wario has three times the endurance and many more methods of attacking) as a main character would be a bit much. Then again, it'd be really fun playing as a huge guy that destroys everything in his path.

Why Wario appearances have been reduced to Mario Party and Smash games?

>> No.1954615

>>1954609
Wario's like all the other mainline Mario characters. They are pretty much always in spinoffs but occaisonally have their own games here and there.
He did get a game on the Wii so its too early to say that the series is dead and spin off fodder.
However I think Wario is the only mainline Mario character that wasn't created by EAD and there's rumours that Miyamoto doesn't like this which is why Daisy and Waluigi get the short end of the stick.

>> No.1954623

>>1954609
If you mean why Wario doesn't appear in mainline Mario games, it's probably because Miyamoto sees most Mario characters that aren't Mario, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi and Bowser to be mostly fluff within the games' universe.
Even he had to take some time to warm up to Rosalina existing.
For a long time, Wario was very lucky to have been created by a separate dev group, who all loved the character. But that's waned in recent years after the death of R&D1 in 2004.
SPD1 would rather make WarioWare or Rhythm games.

After thinking for about a minute, I came up with an idea for a Wariovania based heavily on WL4:
- You have a lifebar and all your moves right from the start.
- Save rooms would be less frequent than in other games and you could heal only up to a certain point at them.
- Bosses are the only obstacles that limit your exploring. Before you can fight a boss, you need to find certain number of treasure, Mario 64 style.
- Treasures can be found by getting through hard platforming sections and solving puzzles, the latter being mostly monster transformations to reach new areas and breaking through special spots to find purple pipe rooms.
- Mini game rooms (not microgames from WarioWare, but more like WL4 with the right amount of simplicity yet some depth like the baseball game), where getting high enough score would you give a treasure.
- Regular coins and diamonds dropped from enemies would let you buy stuff from shop rooms (health, health upgrades and various maps, expensive ones showing more ares and treasure).
- Difficulty settings would change lot of things, most importantly enemy placement, location of treasures and shop prices. Bosses would also have more attack patterns at higher settings.
- After clearing the last boss, you take the big trophy sitting on a pedal and suddenly some switch goes off, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fihc2ONQ5v0 starts playing and you have to race through the whole castle to get out.

Wario Land 3 is an awesome metroidvania with puzzles and keys to find and cool transformations, the levels are big and nonlinear, day/night is cool, lots of treasures that are interesting and unlock shit, sense of progression with powers and levels unlocked and music boxes, replayability (music coins), great music and graphics, genuinely a great time exploring due to perfectly sized levels, the right amount of direction given, and just right difficulty. 10/10.

Wario Land 2 and 3 both have invincible Wario, but it doesn't make sense in 2 because 2 is a traditional platformer, so it just makes 2 feel dumb and easy. WL2 has lame level design and is just boring. The collectibles are a chore to get and make you have to hunt for shit in the walls or grind money, so you end up spending your time running into walls constantly. Nothing about 2 is memorable.

I dunno, Wario Land 2 is my second favorite after 3.

I like all the branching storylines, I like that you're actively collecting coins the whole game through, (unlike 3).
Personally, I really love how Wario handled in 2 (and 3), he wasn't as light and floaty feeling as did in 1 and 4.

I can agree that level design isn't that memorable, but I think the game does remedy this by having the player constantly do things, whether it be grabbing coins, or carrying and enemy around to throw it at pink blocks, and there's still Wario Reaction puzzles or just miscellaneous mechanics unique the level.

2 didn't take advantage of Wario's invincibility as much as it could have (and 3 fixed this).

Now personally, I have a really really difficult time liking 4, I picked it up recently and I've beaten every passage but Ruby and it just doesn't appeal to me at all.

I miss when Wario was good.

>> No.1967968

>Just got WL3 the other day, currently 1/3rd of the way through
I've played 1, part of 2, & 3/4 to 100%. 3 is by far my favorite GBC era game, & level wise I like it a lot more, but mechanically 4 just feels better to play. Especially with things like the head ram/charge & some of the reworked powers.
So I have a question about 3's level design, with the whole "Get chest 1, go to level X & Y, come back & get chest 2, come back 12 levels later for chest 3, 5 levels later for chest 4" thing. Did you like the back tracking & relative shortness of the levels? What about the "puzzles", platform challenges, or bosses presented?
I personally like the level design because the levels are fun & don't get very repetitive due to the fact that each chest takes a separate pathway, you rarely have to go down a previous path that lead to another chest. Most of the bosses I've faced/remember aren't too difficult, especially since you can keep trying until you win with no penalty, & their gimmicks are usually fun to figure out the first time fighting them.

Like half of Nintendo's franchises died once they divided their developers into the EAD's.

They could accomplish so much more with this model. But the divisions are so drastic that there is rarely anything unique or creative from Nintendo any more. For example, we will probably never see another Zelda with Koizumi involved again now that he is stuck with the Mario series.

A bit of a casual Wario player here. I'd say pretty well; often slower-paced and somewhat more strategic. Metroid meets Mario, in a way. They all have very strong personalities, but don't rely on graphical or musical charm to the detriment of gameplay.

The first Wario Land game, and VB Wario, use traditional Super Mario Bros. styled gameplay as a jump-off point. They're probably the fastest-paced and most linear. Wario Land 1 feels sorta like playing through Super Mario World with a wider range of attacks, and more emphasis on coin-grabbing.

On the other hand, Wario Lands 2 and 3 make Wario practically invincible, and remove time limits- while still challenging, these ones are based more around exploration and solving puzzles. The stages can be somewhat linear, although with really interesting puzzles; but Wario Land 2 has a branching path system that adds a lot of replay value, while Wario Land 3's world map encourages backtracking. The powerups were removed in favor of enemies giving empowering status effects. This is the source of a lot of puzzles- like, get an enemy to set you on fire to burn down some trees. It's definitely a lot slower.

Neither 4 nor Shake It are retro, but they give an interesting combination- very linear progression through levels with no alternate routes, no backtracking STRICTLY required, tons of alternate pathways and secrets, but a health bar. The timer returns, but only at the very end of the stage- so it feels like a long exploration before a dash to the finish.

All in all, pretty fun. At their best, it feels like Super Mario Bros. 3 with more power and strategy. At their worst, some puzzles can be sluggish.

Wario doesn't have a mustache, it just looks like one. It's actually nose hair. Pretty sure some WarioWare commercial shows Wario's face forming, his nose is a clove of garlic, and when it turns pink, nose hairs come out and then fuse into the lightning bolt shape.

Now here's a though. If I was ever in charge of a Wario game, you know what I'd want to to try?

Big, open levels. Think levels from Thief, that are massive, sprawling and incredibly open ended. Put an emphasis on treasure hunting (naturally), lots to loot, tons of secret areas to find. A good balance of exploration and beat-em-up, probably a more refined version of World.

Also, Shoulder Charge and no fart/random humor

In MUGEN, he seems to have three moves that reference the WL1 hats, the crouching punch becomes the horn hat, the fireball special uses the dragon hat, and his dash uses the bird hat. He also has an uppercut that's based on spring Wario, though he appears to have some custom moves. He doesn't quite have the shoulder bash, but it's part of a three hit combo, and it's more like a static slam than a charge. He does have the sprites for the shoulder bash, though it they don't look good. I could possibly make a customized Wario where his comboing could be improved (he's as stiff as a board, probably to offset his huge damage), but the shoulder bash would probably be similar to the sliding punch, itself being a copy of a move that the (original) base character had. Wario used to be a literal reskin of another character called Eli King, who appears to have been the self insert of his creator.

>> No.2004129

>>2003357
True, that is how Nintendo works. If they have trouble with an idea, they try slapping a character on it and see if that gives them new ideas. That's how Mario Kart and Smash Bros became what they were. I like that design method actually, even if it does lead to some strange games that just ride off of a series' popularity.

I maintain my previous statement that Sakurai is still annoyed that Wario Land is the superior platformer series. That is my opinion of course.

Speaking of Wario Land, I've been thinking about this for a few days as I've been replaying Wario Land 2, but given the six games in the series plus any other inspirations, how would you go about designing a new Wario Land game? Feel free to just submit a single idea or an entire concept. I ask only because it seems like a difficult act to follow without coming off as a rehash.

Personally, I think that the ideal format would be an exploration one like in WL2, WL3, and VBWL, but that the action elements of WL4 and Shake It should be maintained for specific segments. Not as extreme as the race to the start after clearing a level, but maybe having small sections where those kinds of challenges appear.

Okay, I am going to say something incredibly stupid, and everyone is free to attack me for it.

While Wario Ware has nearly nothing to do with Wario Land, and Wario Land is the superior series by far, I feel they're more compatible than a lot of people give them credit for- including the people who make Wario Ware. If you look at Wario Land 4 and the original games, especially, they seem to share a bunch of assets. And let's not forget that R&D1 worked on the first Wario Wares.

I like the Wario Ware games, but they'd be much, MUCH better if they paid more attention to the original series. I hate how they steal the spotlight in Smash from the main series, because they don't actually seem to be out to change much about Wario at the core- he still goes out on treasure hunts, saves the world once or twice, and ends up sympathetic even when he scams people. (Except for the few times where he's le smelly fart man) They just show a different side to him. We've seen both of the series' gameplay styles, senses of humor, and aesthetics change with time, for better or worse; Wario's universe and gameplay are really flexible, and that's part of why I love him. He's a deep character that's suited to many situations, but exudes more personality than a typical everyman like Mario. He can be a villain, hero, businessman, or simple explorer, and do it all with style.

I wish they would continue both Wario Ware and Wario Land together. They could work apart, or together. I would probably play a game that could combine microgames with adventuring, exploration, treasure-hunting, money-grabbing and surreal powerups. Heck, forget the microgames- I almost have the sense that the Diamond City folks would work as NPCs or helpers or something without any changes to gameplay or visuals.

Wario Land is always #1, but I don't hate Wario Ware, or what they did with Wario. I hate that Wario Land stopped.

Okay, there. Sorry.

>> No.2011387

I agree that there should be a balance between exploration/puzzle-solving and action/platforming, but I feel like part of it should be up to the player. Each stage could have a straightforward path with some platforming and punching up enemies, which branches off into tons of secret routes that are more puzzle-oriented, leading to treasures and possibly alternate exits. You get rewards for speed, and different rewards for exploration- and maybe some other routes that open if you beat enough baddies.

I liked the branching stage paths in Wario Land 2, and I want more of that. I'm picturing the worlds are contained inside objects and stuff, and accessed through a hub world; you'd be making process on multiple worlds at a time, similar to Wario Land 4, but with stages arranged in a less linear order. Stages would be shorter, but wide, with a high concentration of secrets, allowing people to enter and leave a level without too much pain if they want to regain a treasure, but making coin-gathering and exploration challenging. One world could hold a key to solving a puzzle in another.

I love how Wario Land 3 took advantage of Wario's abilities, and the world felt really polished and strong- I feel it should take inspiration from that. I'm tempted to add in buyable powerups, but that was the source of a lot of backtracking and confusion, which doesn't work well without radically changing the stage design to something more Metroidvania-ish. I feel Wario's full arsenal should be available to begin with, and different stages explore different moves and their uses so the player slowly masters him. For instance, an early stage may have a treasure hidden by blocks, and a later stage demonstrates that a specific type of enemy can break the blocks if thrown precisely- so the player goes back to use the move on it.

While Wario's moveset should still be there, I feel he shouldn't be invincible. Getting thrown back instead of dying is annoying, IMO.

I can only imagine the kid who played through the "Stay asleep" story line first, and got upset at how short the game appeared to be.

There should be a Wario/Waluigi game where the world is taken over by cheaters, and the only way to save the world is for them to cheat even harder than the cheaters. Like, using save states against random chance, or using invincibility codes against unwinnable fights.

I did that line first in my most recent playthrough. Gets you to the full stage select menu in the fastest time.

I read somewhere that you aren't allowed to do that line first.

Hell, any game that included metagame content after the main storyline and postgame content would be amazing. If you could use something like cheat engine to get yourself outside of the map only to find more stuff that the developers left for you, and all the battles become unwinnable, requiring you to learn the addresses for things like HP, enemies who constantly dodge your attacks need 100% accuracy, a race that forces you to increase your walking speed, pretty much rewarding the player for figuring out the game mechanics beyond what's normally available to the player within the game.

Woo, finally finished it with all 100 treasures on my save file. Do music coins do anything important? I couldn't bring myself to collect all of them.

At least Wario still has Wario Land music for his victory theme

Brawl actually came out several months before Shake-It
It's more likely that the Shake It team went to Sakurai to ask about the music, meaning it originated in Smash.
At least the Stone Carving City music played during the recent direct so I guess there's something there.

I know this thread won't be around much longer, but thanks for such a lovely ode to the best platformer series ever, /vr/.

I think Super Mario Land 2 was when I started to notice some changes in the formula that were really to my liking, and that eponymous final boss- the mysterious Wario. He was fucking huge, that's for sure. But I was so happy to have the chance to play as him- but how did he play? Ten million times better than Mario, that's for sure.

Wario Land 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, and it solidified my love of the character. I wish, one of these days, we would get another game that the big guys deserves.

I think this has been a fun thread. Talking about Wario with you guys has been a real treat and Wario himself is still fucking great, I'd love to see another proper platformer starring that fat bastard.

The worst part of WarioWare being the series rep at this point in time is that that series has stagnated by now. It made sense in 2008, they had two good games, the third release was a great game, and they had Smooth Moves which was a good introduction to the Wii Remote. Now it's 2014, and they've since had a DSiWare game no one played, a DS game that was love or hate based on how much you liked creating content and playing fan-made content, and a WiiU game that was lackluster. The game's concept has become stale, and the series has fallen into the role of a hardware test turned into a game. I personally never saw anything wrong with the series or with it featuring Wario, but now that it's become so lackluster overall they should turn the focus back on the Wario Land series. It may not be as relevant, but at least it has a better track record.

The range is what I noticed. I could never hit anything with Wario's shoulder charge. I don't remember the super armor, probably because I didn't think him very good and didn't use him very often. Then again, I haven't really played much Brawl in the last 5 years, so I can't say I know or remember much about hte game.

I don't like Wario Land 3 it has too much backtracking with keys. 1 and 2 were better in my opinion.

WL3 is admittedly the only one I haven't yet finished, as it was my first ever non-linear game and my child brain couldn't comprehend such a thing. I'm not really a puzzle-oriented person though.

I also haven't yet beaten VB Wario Land, but that's because my VB's right eye goes to hell trying to play it.
