Favorite /vr/ JRPG? Probably Soul Hackers, like you, or maybe Earthbound/Mother 2.
Favorite JRPG of all time is SMT: Strange Journey, I just got sucked into it for some reason.

Soul Hackers is awesome, probably my favorite retro Megaten.

But my favorite overall I think would be Dragon Quest III.

Soul Hackers shouldn't count because it was only released recently overseas.

That doesn't make any sense though.

We have threads about games that weren't even released outside of Japan.

Come on it's still retro, most people that aren't into retro jRPGs didn't like it so much.

Ever since I was a kid.

Super Mario RPG would be second because that shit is just so fun.

Speaking of JRPGs, doesn't the Megami Tensei translation get released soon?

Yeah I was compelled to finish that game as well, something that hasn't happened to me in a long time.

Anyway, since this is /vr/, my favourite JRPG is probably Lufia 2.

Yeah, and also if you never played an older game until recently it's not really retro and you aren't allowed to talk about it here.

why not just play retro WRPGs?

>> No.1933141

Maybe it's because it was the first RPG I ever played. Or maybe it's because it IS the best RPG of all time.

Either way this was my first, followed by CT. And the rest is history.

Probably one of the few modern RPGs I enjoyed so much to start a second playthrough right away. I very much hope we get another SMT in the same style (IE Westerner focused, Atlas did a great job creating a new backdrop for their series).

Favorite retro JRPG though is FF6, I love the characters and the setting of the game. Sadly, the gameplay is nothing to really write home about.

I did that with Person 4 Golden. Now all the SMT fans in this thread are gonna shit on me because that's my first SMT related game.

retro related I like Xenogears.

P4 was my first introduction to SMT (Well, actually it was the original SMT but I dropped it pretty quickly because I was getting my shit wrecked and didn't know what I was doing), but it was a long game I never bothered to play it again.

SJ just really struck the perfect note for me, all the characters, the story, the mystery, the combat and party building, all of it tied in really well. I was going to play 3, but it didn't really give me the same feeling as SJ.

What's the best way to play the original two now? I heard they got a phone port, but is it any different from a translated ROM?

>> No.1933601

>>1933486
It's just the GBA port with the original SNES music and a (arguably) better translation.

Like all GBA games, the palette is super-bright and it looks kind of shit, not to mention everything is stretched to fit the screen.

I'm not going to shit on you for liking Persona 4, I'm going to assume that you're one of the few sane ones. My problem with it is the fanbase who only ever talk about waifus, but to be honest you shouldn't let the fans ruin a game for you.

SJ is great, I need to start a second playthrough soon.
I'm actually playing the NG+ on Soul Hackers, I already found a dungeon I missed on my first playthrough, so far this second time is a lot better than the first.
I also haven't played a RPG twice in a long time.

>> No.1933746

Mother 3. I usually hate non-action JRPGs but used to have a few exceptions to that rule. Mother 3 is so good though that none of the exceptions are valid any longer. Mother 3 is the only JRPG I've played which delivers something close to divinity. I have yet to dive into Earthbound and am worried it cannot match the cleverness and density of Mother 3.

Soul Hackers is pretty cool though until it turns too easy. The style and OST it has carry it pretty far but after that it needs at least challenge or great writing (plot is interesting, but the writing doesn't carry it well enough). Shin Megami Tensei III is great on hard mode but unfortunately not retro because this board is retardedly against acknowledging the aging of console generations.

If we go into ARPGs, King's Field is absolutely dope with that map design and Ys IV: Dawn of Ys perfects the pre-Windows Ys formula and has the sweetest retro dungeon track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTA3hkzIE5I

Got to be lines somewhere, amigo. As much as I'd like to see the GBA available for discussion and open up topics on PC past the 1999 date, that all comes with its own slew of problems.

Also, at least SMT3 can be discussed on /v/ and /vg/ with fairly lively threads, a lot of just past retro games get about four posts before 404.
