Not /vr/, but like a year ago I loaned a friend my copy of of Persona 3: FES. Hadn't even finished it yet, but I had other stuff I was working on. Then he dropped out of regular classes to just take online courses, so I haven't seen him since.
I spent like $15 on that game ;_;

He's not worth dealing with, to be honest. He started taking online courses because he was so antisocial that he just hated dealing with people at all. He got into anime and decided being an otaku shut-in was cool (partially my fault, since I got him into the shit in like ninth grade). P3 is kind of a shit game anyways, so it's no great loss. 4 is better and has actual characters and pacing, and I held onto that shit for dear life.

Nearly happened to me with my GB copy of Mega Man IV. Lent it to some shithead friend in 5th grade who promised he'd return it in two weeks. Two weeks later, I invite him over and he promises to give it back when he's brought home. When we bring him home, he makes up some lame excuse. Same thing happened again the next time I invited him. He made every goddamn excuse to keep it from me until a year later when I got his teacher involved. Then I finally got it back.

Thankfully, I've only had the complete reverse happen. Friend of mine would loan me a game, I'd keep it for a while, he'd forget about it since he actually doesn't care about stuff he's not going to play again. I got a WWE game for the N64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Dungeon Siege 1, and Chaos Legion for the PS2 this way. And it's not like I moved away either, he was the one who went off to college a long ways away and made no attempt to reclaim his old stuff (Or even say goodbye).

On the flip side though, for a while I had to start watching my games because stuff we didn't really play when he came over would go missing. For instance, he walked off with my Ogre Battle 64 once, and had a terrible habit of stealing manuals from things as well.

to my sister's friend... dunno why I did it.

A few months later they are no longer friends and the friend moves in with her new boyfriend somewhere unknown. I never saw my games again.

Last I heard, the friend became a drug addict and most likely sold off my games.

A breakup resulted in my ex never giving back my Wii, my 3DS, my DS Lite, my Supercard DSTWO, my Xbox 360, my N64, about 15 Wii games, around 5 3DS games, around 20 Gamecube games, around 40 DS games, around 30 Gameboy Advanced games, about 20 Xbox 360 games, and about 20 N64 games.
I quit playing video games for about two years after that, and still have trouble playing games even today.

anyways back to retro stuff, here's a pretty common story

I lended my copy of Super Mario World in 3rd grade (when this game was new) to this one Mexican kid. Pretty nice kid, friendly, but a bit perverted.

So, after the week deadline was up, I asked him where it was. He kept on delaying, and I asked and I asked again and again.

Turns out the little fucker gave it to the 6th grade big bad bully at elementary school because he needed lunch money. I found out because I had put my name on it, and then I see the guy showing it off to everyone at school.

It happened twice, and both because of my older brother. He lend Dr Mario to some friends of him that I only remember that they were twins, and apparently they lost it, they gave us Jurassic Park for the SNES in return but I know those fuckers had a plan that my brother didn't saw.

And the other was with Doom for SNES, my brother lend it to another friend of him and his little brother went to the USA to visit some family and he took the game with him for some reason and forgot it there.

Good thing I already got both for cheap on flea markets.

And don't make me start talking about my ex, that bitch stole my entire NES collection and I still have games to recover. And then she gave them to another friend of her.

Mario Party 2 is self explanatory, but with Animal Crossing occasionally if one of us got some kind of item that the other person wanted we would wait till the other person wasn't playing and then log on to their character, take the item from their house, drop the item outside and then we'd go back on our own character and pick the item up.

What's funny about that is my mom initially only bought one copy of Animal Crossing Wild World for me, my sister, and brother (who was now playing games) when it came out. Misadventures of tron bonne got stolen when I hosted a party. Whoever it was left to case, just took the disc.

Megaman legends was lent out and never returned. Later tried to get it back and found out he sold it.

Lent Lunar 2 to a friend and he kept it for 4 years, but thats normal between us. I had his Valkyrie Profile for just as long. We always return each others shit eventually.

Harsh life lesson I learned, broke up with my girlfriend, but forgot to get my N64 games back from her. When I called her about them she laughed and hung up on me. Went to her house and her sisters boyfriend beat the shit out of me. Wasnt worth any more effort to try and get them back.

A little bit of a different situation, two punks got drunk at my friends house party and got in a fistfight, then threw up on her N64. Got in the vents and shit. That was lovely.

A friend of mine who moved away a few years ago still has my copy of Brigandine; he actually called me about it a while back, and asked if he needed to send it back, but I told him to keep it.

I always thought Brigandine was kind of a shitty game, despite its value, but he seemed to enjoy it, so I'm cool with it.

My sister somehow lost our copy of Mario 3 when we were kids. To be fair, our NES wasn't working so well those days and games for that system were getting harder and harder to find for rent, so my parents ended up getting us a Genesis that Christmas anyway.

All the characters felt like bland anime stereotypes from what I could tell, and maybe they'd have grown on me if I'd gotten the chance to play more. Other than that, the load times between areas got on my nerves, although that's not really a valid argument, I'll admit, and the dungeon-crawling and combat just didn't speak to me.

P4 just feels like a better, more polished game, IMO.

Pokemon Red, and a Gameboy pocket... I'm the kind of faggot that gets really fucking excited when a friend of mine even thinks for a minute about playing a game that I enjoyed. Mostly because I've got shitty taste and play mostly Nintendo-esque games. So when my friend said he wanted to borrow pokemon, I told him he could as long as he didn't save over the game.

So I start getting nervous for a while, and he keeps forgetting to bring it. I tell him to give me his meowth plush as a shitty collateral. He agrees. Next day he says to give it back, I say give back the gameboy and the game. "I didn't bring it, anon, my parents are really mad I let you have the toy, give it back and I'll bring your stuff tommorow". Being a dumb fuck 11 year old, I have it to him.

Next day he didn't come to school... or the next day. I started asking teachers. I told them what's up. They told me he moves, and that was pretty much the end of that.

Never trusted anyone again.

I did end up being the faggot friend once, but it wasn't a game, it was a strategy guide for EarthBound. I still have it. It wasn't in very good condition, it was missing pages from the part I got stuck on too.

It wasn't so much me moving away, so much as him moving away and dropping all contact with me.

I played through that fucker... seven times. I had everything maxed. All stars for stats. All the best equips. Manually. All manual. I did that shit manual.

I loved that game.

I played through that save... seven times.

And he borrowed it. And I said, "Just don't delete the top save."
I had three saves, see. One at the end, after everything had been completed. One at the end, but before you'd done the last barrage of sidequests. And one at Zeal. So that I could go back any time I wanted, see? And I did that every time I played through, so that I knew that I could go back.

And I said, "Just don't delete the top save."

And he deleted every single one. And replaced them all with a single save at the Tyranno Lair. The same save three times.

And I asked him why. Why would he do that.

And he said, "It doesn't matter, you cheated anyway."

I never played it again.

He asked to borrow it again two years later, and I said sure, whatever. I didn't care anymore.
But I asked for it back, like four months after, and he said he'd already given it to another friend.
And then some time after that, he moved away.

But I didn't care anymore. I'd already lost that game long ago.

I almost became that friend in 1994. Me and my brother borrowed Mega Man 5 for NES from a friend of my brother's. We then proceed to play the game and have a blast with it, beat it several times. Suddenly we realize that almost a year has passed. My brother's friend has not shown any interest in asking the game back. Bro contacts him and reminds him that we still have something of his in our possession.

Turns out he didn't even remember the whole thing about borrowing said Mega Man 5 to us anymore. Had we not taken the initiative, he would've surely forgotten all about it. Anyway, me and my bro are above stealing other people's shit, so the game finally went back home after a pleasant year with it. But I was left wondering how some people can possibly be so carefree about their shit, it just doesn't make sense.

My first memory of Mario 3 is playing it in a hopsital bed. I must have been about 3 or 4 and was completely groggy and couldn't figure out how to get past the map screen. After that it's kind of a blur but I remember being upset when they took it away. It's nice that they still do that.

Comix Zone, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, FF Tactics, Diablo 2, Megaman Legends 2, Resident Evil 3.
Basically all my Xbox games and PS2 games too. Because not only were the games gone, but the systems were gone too :(

The falling out was made official after that so I never got my game back. I was never that angry about it though, I pretty much did all I possibly could with Virtual Springfield anyway.
