That's likely a troll but...

Yes, and people will buy things just because they are "rare". They don't want it because they want to play it, they want it because it's labelled as "rare" and they got an orgasm everytime they look at it on their shell or brag about it on retrogaming boards. That's why they accept to pay unreasonable prices for these things and are proud of it.

Is it stupid ? Yes I think it is, but a lot of unreasonable things also are. I say let them fill the bank accounts of opportunistic retrogaming entrepreneurs if that makes their life better... and let us making fun about their stupidity for thinking owning a "rare" game will make them happy or "special".

I don't know why the "collector" vs. "emulator" argument still exists.

Both sides are right.

Emulators are purists in the sense in that they prioritize the playing of the game above all else, so the medium they use for such is irrelevant. As long as they can play the game, they're satisfied. And that's fine.

Genuine collectors (who actually plan on playing the games rather than use them for shelf porn) are purists similar to emulators, but prefer to have a tangible connection to something that exists in physical space and actually has a living history. They appreciate the aesthetics of the cartridges, box art, and systems themselves. I understand this might bother emulators because they see those elements as superficial and materialistic, which have nothing to do with the actual "game" itself.

Collectors don't see that duality. For them, those "superficial and materialistic" elements are as part of the game as its code. And beyond that, collecting is simply fun in its own right (not necessarily buying from eBay auctions, but hunting as flea markets, yard sales, thrift stores, etc).

And again, neither side is wrong. Both sides just connect with the hobby in different ways.

That's not what people are upset about and you'd know this if you've been on this board for more than a week. Even during its early days people here always discouraged paying these assinine prices for a game, what is praised is if someone goes out and finds a rare game for a decent price in the wild. >> No.1921345

Why do people on /vr/ seem to hate collectors?
This board seems like it is mostly populated with people in their early 20s who think playing emulators is all retro gaming is about. They can't understand why someone would want to play a "real" copy of an old game, let alone pay for one. People who care about the real copies are generally people who grew up with them and want the experience to feel as authentic as possible. They know full well that an emulator can be indistinguishable from the real thing, but that's not the point.
It's about owning a game you could never get as a kid.

Of course... I can't think of many games from my youth that I would pay 250$ for. But, if that game really twists your tits then good job, OP. Hope you enjoy it.

I'm not a collector, but I certainly understand why someone would spend good money on old games. Collecting shit is always a money pit.

Just like the absurd insector onslaught at the end they threw into the Sega CD version "for the heck of it" (There are no shooting segments in Act 3 on any Japanese version of the game -- as soon as Metal leaves Gillian you enter the room with Jamie)

The Justifier isn't required, but it damn sure helps for the added difficulty of the Sega CD version.
