I love when you get to put in a name. makes the game seem more personal since i use my own name.

So what kinda name do you go for? Keep it as is? Make yourself the hero? Have fun with a name like "Ass Face"? What about your party members, what do you do about them?

I used to give characters my name and my friend's names, but once I started browsing the internet it became hard to discuss games because I didn't remember the character's original names, so I decided to leave it as is.

I usually go with the given name.

It's funny that you posted a pic of Sabin on the enter a name screen because I always name him after myself whenever I go on with another play through of FF III.

I used to name the main character after myself. Not in FF6, but something like Chrono Trigger, yeah.

I stopped doing this when I got to Persona 3 since I was playing in a college dorm and didn't want my roommate/floormates to walk in on anime girls getting wet over some long haired dude that shared my name.

This was the turning point for me. I just can't rename the characters after me anymore. I go back and play games that allow you to rename the character and I just can't do it anymore. I mean, fuck, I fire up Harvest Moon SNES and I just can't do it because it would be weird as fuck explaining why virtual women want to fuck me.

Though I do have an exception. Dragon Quest and Zelda. Dragon Quest because...well, I don't know. It just feels right. And Zelda because it was the way I used to differentiate files with other people.

And as an aside, I fucking love that Bahumut Lagoon encouraged you to name the characters after yourself and a girl you had a crush on. I discovered the game a bit after my revelation and laughed for about 5 minutes straight. They fucking knew, and I love it.

Never was nuts about the feature. In a game with established characters, why not use the established names?

When forced by Moon games, I usually just name the hero Eiyuu, Yuusha, or sometimes Shujinko or Shu if that's too long. Which is really dumb and unimaginative, but whatever.

Usually if characters have names I just leave them as is, unless I'm feeling weird. One time I did a playthrough of FFIX with most of the characters renamed as people from the three musketeers

When I'm playing something where the hero has no canonical name or anything, like Dragon Quest, my usual go-to is "Alex" for some reason.

We had this one kid who always gave his characters his own original names and that's fine however you want to play is cool

but whenever we talked about the games he would insist on his names in the conversation. So we'd be talking about where to find this or that and he'd chime in, "Where do you get Cindy's best weapon" and we're all who the fuck is Cindy

Cindy was Yuffie if you where curious

I think, I only renamed a character once or twice. I didn't like the sound of Levant so I changed it to my name. Obviously, Harvest Moon also gets to have my name (if it fits, if not I shorten it a bit), every game else I respected the default name because that's what the developer had in mind to use otherwise they wouldn't put it in there.

I keep the names of actual characters and name player stand-ins.

In Zelda, I always rename the main character. I also do in Dragon Quest. In all Final Fantasy games sans the first one I keep the names, although when i first played FFVII as a 12 year old, I renamed everyone and had a blast.

I refrain from female character naming sometimes cause it'd be weird if someone noticed a correlation at college.

The only character I really change from the default name in games is Link, depending on the iteration.

Lately, if the game doesn't give a name for the character I'll usually hop over to Google Translate and plug in descriptions of the character until something that sounds good comes out. For instance, I've been calling DQ hero's "Shujinko", and I named a recent Monster Rancher mon "Conejito".

this got especially interesting when i started playing roguelikes... i tend to spend a week on a RL at a time or so, and i'll generally keep the main character named after the same ninja, just with a generational suffix attached

so my typical high score table would look something like this:

Ghostface IX
RZA the Rad
GZA XIV

I don't get people who name themselves joke shit. They're usually the normal people who are scared to engage in a game and really immerse themselves in it so they break the ice with lowbrow humor. Like as if you ever been to the theater and people chuckle louder than they normal would if a serious drama includes the slightest hint of comic relief because they would feel safer with the film disarming itself than to bare any teeth. Its casuals being unable to cope with earnestly engaging in something.
