1)They could have found someone else or their current stabilished franchises would be liscensed games[Popeye->Mario, Alien->Metroid, King Kong=DK, Star Wars->Star Fox, the list goes]
2)Alex Kidd or Ristar could be their mascot
3)Nintendo could be Sony's gaming branch

Atari produced more ET carts than there were Atari consoles on the market

Even if it was good and sold respectively well, it would have been a loss

Not to mention that there were many other reasons for the video game crash
