Alright, so I've wanted to try the original SMT game for a while. The ps1 version is obviously the best. but it has no fucking english translation, so I have to settle for some other shit. Here's the question. Which version is actually the next best thing?

Also, which Silent Hill should I start with and how should I play it? I've heard emulation doesn't treat SH games well. I tried the first one, though. It's controls are far too god-awful. So I guess what I'm asking is, which one's the first one that doesn't control like ass?

for SMT, probably the GBA version. it looks a good deal better than the SNES one. might have to translate it though. with a patch

GBA is untranslated as far as I remember, so you're stuck with the SNES version which isn't as bad as you might think.

Just make sure to get the fixed translation and probably the patch that maps the automap key to the triggers.

It isn't that bad? I dunno, when I saw the screenshot comparisons, it seems to be at least marginally inferior. What about Silent Hill? Any advice?

It's still SMT and it's, as far as I can tell, the only translated version. You're pretty much stuck with it, but it's not like it's the end of the world. I don't think the difference looks that great. Definitely not worth slogging through the game with a translation pulled up or anything.

I didn't get into Silent Hill, so I can't offer you any advice there...

Silent Hill and good controls are mutually exclusive. 3's a straight sequel to 1, so you should probably get the PC version of 2, or try emulating.

How does this stack up to the later games?

Start with SH 1 with a psx emulator, you shouldn't have any problem, don't be discouraged by the dated graphics since they help heighten the horror setting. There are pc versions of SH 2 and 3.

I can't really recomend the rest of the games since Team silent disbanded shortly after the third one and the quality dipped quite badly.

So Silent Hill never has good controls? I mean, the thing that bothered me in the first one was that "direction is always oriented to the character" thing, where, even if he's facing the camera, you still have to use forward to run...

The iOS version is literally just the GBA version ported/running in an emulator. You can pirate it pretty easily.

There are no downsides to this? I mean, the game doesn't suffer ay for being on iOS?

Someone is working on it, if I'm not mistaken. Check out the SMT General.

Start with Silent Hill 1, and just play it. Games like SH aren't meant to be mastered or played perfectly on the first play through. You're meant to play the fucking thing, learn how it works, make up your own mind and either complete the game or die trying.

It's fucking September, yet still so summer in here...

Just because someone doesn't want to play something that is mechanically bad doesn't make them a newfag. If you have to *endure* the fucking controls of the game, maybe it was a shit game to begin with. I'm asking what the first one is that ISN'T shit, okay? So if you don't have any answer for that, then please just go.

It's called tank controls. Get used to them if you want to really play survival horror games.

Its at the par with SJ and SMT II.

The Ios translations is fucking awful.

They're inexperienced controls that developers only emplyed early on in transitioning into the 3d-era of gaming, because they weren't sure of what controls would be most intuitive or easy to use. It isn't something anyone EVER puts in a game now because it's considered unacceptable.

If people are bitching about having the SNES version in English, then their only other options are to translate the games themselves or play the iOS version.

Eeeeh. I've seen the screencaps of your character's mother in that version. That was enough to deter me.
I made this for comparison.

Is it better in some way other than graphics? I would say the Playstation looks better.

>> No.1916503

Since you can't read runes, you're stuck with the translated SNES roms for SMT 1 and 2. They're both very much worth a playthrough though. From what I know, the PS versions have (arguably) better graphics, but the soundtrack isn't as enjoyable. I'm about to give Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei a go since a translation patch was released recently (Thanks for the heads up /vr/!). I really, really love the Megaten series.

To Silent Hill: 1 through 4 are fantastic and all worth playing repeatedly. Origins is fine for a go or two just as a change of pace but weapons with durability is a fun crusher for some people. Everything else after that is just terrible.

As regards the controls, most older survival horror games controlled like that. It's not bad, it's just different and it takes a bit of time to adjust to if you've never played anything with tank controls before. In short: Git gud, because it's worth it.
