that thing is a damn useful weapon all around
explosions slightly go through walls, awesome rocketjumping, deflects shots, has a massive spread, good rate of fire
complete lack of impact damage and no combo on kill really hurts it though

I don't really mind the lack of combo on kill/damage, it's a great utility weapon and good for offense in general.

I've also been using the Hammer/Mace a lot and that's been really useful for just general hordes of enemies while saving special meter.

The only gun I don't really touch is the SMG, just doesn't feel as useful as the shotgun and since it's in the Plasma Rifle pickup slot it's not too common.

Also I have to say, the Hammer/Mace doesn't really have much use until it's got at least 60 energy.

And I've never really found a use for the full 200% charge since it takes so long. I prefer to make a lightning field and just smack things around while things are painlocked.

I actually dance around Masterminds like nothing.

I forgot the girl's name moves fast enough to circlestrafe while hacking away really.

Same for Cyberdemons.

It's kind of like punching a Cyberdemon to death but easier since the sword has range.
Can also bop them with the Hammer once or twice to get pain going with the lightning field.

Demonsteele is fighting for the place of my favorite gameplay mod, holy shit

It's still too long to just charge it in the middle of any fight, but doesn't take as long to charge it up before one.

Nothing concrete, though there's quite a few "would be nice" ideas.
The very first build had the hwando separated into two distinct fighting styles, tentatively named Wild Gaijin Flailing (click button recieve melee) and Glorious Nippon Discipline (time your strikes to form beat-'em-up style combo chains).
Eventually Wild Gaijin Flailing became the mainstay and Glorious Nippon Discipline was cut, but I'd like to revisit that sometime and see if it can be done better.

If you have any other ideas, though, I'd be open to hearing them.

Well I like the sound of timing your strikes a lot.

How about a Power stance?
Big slow slashes with a little area effect but maybe you have to give up having a free right hand so no guns.

Although I'd have to know how the timed combos thing would be balanced out before a third stance there.

Barring that, how about have both the flailing style and the timing style then make it so the style meter add some extra little effects that would be different for the two stances.

Like say.. Frantic flailing lets you go a little faster as it ranks up(And makes more blood come out), timed strikes gives you more power or something.

I'm not sure if any of that is really feasible or particularly interesting though.

Chocolate Doom keeps crashing at the end of E1M2 for me and keeps hanging when I try to exit, forcing me to force quit. But ZDoom runs perfectly.

a BLOCKMAP mechanic that was "fixed" in ZDoom, and lets you kill stuff more easily with the BFG

For example, a mastermind will take some skill to be killed by a single BFG shot in vanilla ports, but you can just run directly in front of one and shoot the BFG and you can rest assured it will die in one hit

The only time I really have framerate issues is if I do Back Specials on huge hordes of Imps/Zombies or set off a series of barrel explosions.

Outside of that it surprisingly has little issues.
Not even with armies of Archviles calling their armies of flying flames spewing fireballs everywhere.

Open random WADs and look at their scripts. Once you feel like you're familiar with the syntax and the overall feel of ACS, copy some code snippets from the ZDoom Wiki. Study them and try to figure out which line does what, and how. If the code that you copied works, go ahead and customize it a tiny bit.

Learning from others' stuff helps a lot. Basing your first attempts off their work is also a great way to learn. Just don't forget to ask them first/give credit if you're planning to release your scripts

i can't get into doomrla, all the "normal" weapons are distinctly underpowered compared to their vanilla counterparts and it takes playing three or four maps of a megawad before you get enough modpacks to make some decent ones. sometimes you get a lucky drop but it's too rare to rely on. what do people use the technician's starting modpack on? is it worth immediately putting it on the pistol, or saving it?

Use the shotgun, it's the only weapon that's pretty much super close to vanilla still. It'll only go up in power, especially if you overload it with Technical mods.

All actors have rather straightforward names that conform to specific patterns, so it's pretty easy to work most of them out.
Just don't summon guns with Pickup on the end, or I'll make skeletons dance in your liver at night.

Well, let's see here.

11 tics for a pistol shot.
One bullet with 15 damage.
So since you can do three shots in a little under a second, its DPS is around 47.7272-repeating.
It takes about 28 tics for a full shotgun shot.
It fires 16 pellets with 13 damage each, and 16x13 = 208 damage on a full hit. (35/28)*208 = 267.43 DPS.
The SMG takes 3 tics for a shot, and can fire seven times in a second. Each bullet does 12 damage. So 7x12 = 84 DPS.
The grenade launcher fires in 16 tics, launches a grenade with all of 10 impact damage and 256 explosive damage--but good fucking luck hitting with all of that since it's all spread out, so it's more like 128. So (35/16)*128 = 280 DPS.

So we have DPS of:
Pistol = 47.7272
SMG = 84
Shotgun = 267.43
Grenade launcher = 280

...Huh. That's quite a disparity.

Here we go, I've done a few changes I'd like your opinions on, taking a little bit from a lot of people.
The Acacia pistol fires just a smidge faster and its damage has been doubled.
The Sabbath SMG's damage has not quite been doubled (from 12 damage to 20), but its accuracy has been tightened up dramatically and it has a high chance to inflict painchance on enemies--and when they're pained, they stay that way for 10/12 tics, recoiling back a bit. Even the Cyber/Spidermind have a higher painchance to it.

Oh and the Testament's been sped up by two tics just because.

The Gargoyles are the evil eye's replacement in Doom 64. I always found them much more sinister and cooler than the evil eye, but I will remove them on v20. Still gonna take months. The Baron of Hell already has the quintuple projectile attack, and a very special thing that I will only show up on v20's trailer, so, I don't think it needs more features to distinguish him from the Hell Knight.

My preferred spammed command of choice is actually A_SpawnItemEx. The A_SpawnDebris comes from Doom Radys, which is really kind of silly because it has pretty much no major points of customization--you can't even change the x or y location of the spawn point!
While normally I'd be incredibly appreciative for the code, I figure this is something I really need to learn how to do properly, so I think it'd be good if I experimented around with what would work and what doesn't instead of just getting something good from the getgo.

Yeah, learn how to use A_CustomMissile, and make your blood actors actual missiles instead just tossing them to the air and using A_CheckFloor to detect if they are touching the ground. This isn't just easier and more reliable, but also generates decals, and less shit to process.
One more thing: Make the blood spots have no translucency. Translucent actors are more expensive to render, and it will also make the blood look better, because blood is not translucent.

Fastest method is BFG. One good hit and it's dead. 40 tics, just a little more than a second. But you don't always have the BFG. In those cases, the second fastest weapon is the Rocket Launcher. Four rockets over 80 tics. Blocking with the sword seems to be the fallback option for when dodging has failed/there's no room to dodge. So the timing is when it's just about to hit you.

on the one hand its easier to get infighting going because the monsters blast constantly and you just have to line them up

on the other hand once a horde has been thinned out a single or a few remaining monsters can be a lot more annoying to manipulate because they turn into gun turrets when you are in their line of sight

I quite like the belt, initially, though I should point out that appear to be linked by absolutely nothing, you should draw a little gray patch over the bullets, and then some little gray pixels between the bullets. NATO forces today use disintegrating linked belts for machineguns, the belt link is broken off and thrown out (separately) with the empty casing, I think that would be a good thing to model it on.

They also seem to be defying gravity, by hanging stiffly in the air like that, which you wouldn't have to change, if you put them through a feed chute (basically a flexible chute that you run the belt through, it makes sure the belt feeds properly and doesn't twist, and it shields the belt from snagging on things).

But I really like where the minigun is heading, it's looking better than ever.

I like the idea of playing Doom on my phone, but apparently smartphones must be fucking pieces of shit or something, because even a Boom port runs at a fucking crawl (and it was also a buggy barrel of dogturds).

Touchscreens suck a million dicks per hour too, fucking impossible to play Doom with that, you'd need a gamepad attachment, something that attaches through the charger port, giving you two D-pads, four buttons on each side, select and start, as well as shoulder buttons.

So I guess my only portable option at this moment is still GBA Doom, sure, it's a butchered port, but it actually runs properly, that's more than what I can say about running it on a phone.

the more maps you play the more adept you will become at finding secrets. i've played thousands of maps and i rarely miss secrets now. there's only so many different ways they're hidden. this is doubly so if you are familiar with other work by the author of the map you're playing and already know how they like to hide secrets. for example in an alexander eternal map, if you see a freestanding switch in front of a wall, check the back of it, it's almost certainly pressable too. or check all corners because he likes to inset shootable switches in small tunnels in out-of-sight places.

There were times where both games would just throw SO MANY ENEMIES at you, it was fucking ridiculous. Quicksaving didn't even help. That's my only gripe with both of those games. Haven't played SS2 yet.

I played SS3BFE, and fighting the fuck hueg waves of enemies was pretty fun at first, but as I progressed it became so fucking boring because the enemies aren't really anymore advanced than the waves of aliens in Galaga. In some levels the waves would never end, and it just felt like they were artificially lengthening the levels.

I give up on all serious sam games at some point. They throw around this whole thing about being just like the old FPS games, but it's not. You just move from arena to arena blasting away at tedious hordes of bullshit, no real level design tailored for exploration. I don't mind that aspect too much, but there was one time in both FE and SE where there was a never-ending barrage of enemies getting spawned and you had to go through it to reach an area where the door would close, and even then you'd still have to kill the clever bastards that made it past the door. Those are the two parts where I turned down the difficulty in both games.

In the second encounter there were serious bombs at least.

But in that one, it kinda bothered me the amount of "gimmick rooms" that were actually hard.

I mean, in regular rooms that are challenging I can come up with strategies or switch between weapons to turn things into my favour. But in the bouncy floor room, for example, it boils down to luck and I can't even aim because everybody is flying all over the fucking place.

Basically, I have to quicksave whenever things are going well midfight. I get it is fun for coop or such, but they should tone down how they scale with harder diffuculties.
