Does /vr/ have experience with Capture Cards? I'd like to record my retro-vidya gameplay, but I am not sure how to get the best possible image. How do I make it not look like shit?

spend lots and lots of money or just get really lucky with cheap shit.

for example the roxio gamecap (the one with hdmi and component) is over $100 and would still be considered cheap crap.

if you get a non-faulty one it can be a nice entry level point with half decent quality.

composite? good luck on that one as it is even more expensive though i found the enmvg to be alright for $30 though it has been discontinued and tends to make your video look like an old vhs tape.

pic related.

If I buy the cheapest chinese shit, how bad would it look like?

basicly double the artifacts.

i don't have any of my old recordings using the chinese knockoff "ezcap" but it was pretty bad, especially audio.

Fix your interlacing

That is all

Its way easier to just use an emulator and record with fraps or use something like OBS to stream depending on what you're trying to do.

I have a hauppauge colossus and I think its a peice of shit, mostly because OBS doesn't recognize it so I gotta do some ass backwards work arounds to stream ps1.

that is what a $30 composite cap card does, it cannot be fixed without upgrading.

You might want to invest into a DVD recorder if you're going to be capturing older systems

I've got a Dazzle USB dongle and it works alright. No automatic support for 480i/240p switching, but it works fine if you use the appropriate deinterlacer to pull the video apart into individual fields.

>it cannot be fixed
Yes, it can. Throw the video through a deinterlacing filter to retrieve the original fields before you do anything else to it. A simple bob + downsample will do the trick.

Not him but is there any tutorials on this?

I'm not too versed with video encoding

Depends on what you're using to capture the video.

The basics:
Your cheapass chinese video capture is probably expecting 480i video. So, it's capturing two 240-line fields (each 1/60 of a second) and weaving them into a single interlaced frame. You want to take the even/odd fields apart again and simply treat them as 2 individual 240-line frames. A "bob" derinterlacing filter will do this, but will offset each one by 1/480 of the picture height (emulating how a TV would scan them in 480i). If you use a bob filter but make it output in half-resolution (240 lines), you should get clean 240p fields.

>>1911081
Also, and this is VERY IMPORTANT:

NEVER treat weaved interlaced video like it's a progressive 30hz capture. The very first time you do that, you'll smudge out most of the fine interlacing pattern and you'll lose the motion quality forever. ALWAYS deinterlace FIRST.

What program are you using to capture the video? If it's mencoder or something, it's as simple as just using "-vf tfields".

My capture card is a piece of shit Avertech job that's out of production. I mean, it works well enough after a shitload of fucking with the drivers, but it refuses to allow me to play anything with MacroVision encoding; read: every goddamn VHS tape made since forever.

Perfectly. The only thing I haven't been able to run on it is the english patch of the Bubblegum Crash game. Just crashes on boot. The unpatched version is fine.

Also, here's goddamn Mega Man 2 for Turbo GrafX.

Also, to be fair, I just threw this through YADIF because I couldn't be arsed to set up the bob filter correctly. You can occasionally see some artifacts.

I remember the original thread that guy posted his receipt in on the PA forums. It was back in like 2006 or 7 and was already a joke by then. I kind of regret that the game ever did come out. It was inherently funny.

lrn2. There's not one magical secret but you've been given good advice such as matching the source signal and applying filters in the correct order. You can get good quality with a cheap Chinese clone card if you know what your doing. If you don't know what you're doing then yeah it will look like the shit posted here.
