I'm a musician by trade, and I make all my "normal" music with FL Studio/Fruity Loops. Which, it turns out, has complete regular-ass MIDI output and can even render to MIDI files. The bad thing is that most megawads expects you to play on UV or get fucked and don't even bother to implement difficulty settings. IMO I think the difficulty should also expand beyond enemy/item placement; on one of my maps I give a player on UV a shotgun but an SSG on NTR. I think it would add replayability somewhat and help reward a player who has the patience to play your wad at different difficulties

Often I think I should run through a wad first on NTR-ITYTD just to learn the routes and architecture so the UV run can be fully focused on combat, but that takes a while...

I usually play ultra violence. Played on too young to die recently to complete scythe 2 because I was getting crazy frame drops on the last level due to using a mod. Easier difficulties are fun to see how fast you can run through a level.

I'm pretty much the opposite of vanilla when it comes to playing doom. Mouselook, OpenGL, and I use gameplay mods like 95% of the time (Mostly Demonsteele and Project MSX lately).

I loved Pirate Doom, personally. Very fun, they did a good job of capturing the Monkey Island vibe.

It is pretty weak compared to plasma gun and harder to use than SSG. It's nearly useless in closed areas(and that means %80 percent of Doom 1). The only solution to make RL useful again is to increase it's damage.

On the flipside it's much better at handling groups of enemies than both the Plasma Rifle and SSG.

It will clear out packs of Revenants and Hell Knights much faster than the other two choices.

I never really felt the Rocket Launcher was useless or weak, it seems pretty capable.

The problem with making the spread wider is that doesn't address the issue of the gun at all.
Doom is a close to mid range game in deathmatch and when fighting monsters.
So the spread is not really that much of an issue.

And if you look at the firing rate it would be kind of invalidated by the regular shotgun if it's only doing 2x damage.

It would be better to upgrade the single barrel shotgun AND the chaingun than to nerf the SSG.

I think it would work. It would become a weapon that you'd use in certain conditions and would make the player switch between weapons more. In Doom II, you'll be using the SSG 80-85% of the time, with only 2x dmg it would even things out.

I want to piece together a gameplay mod to my personal taste from other existing gameplay mods.

Without knowing any code and having no experience whatsoever, how many hours would it take to read up on Doom modding and fuck around enough to be capable to do something like that?

Just pasting together bits and pieces that already exist without actually creating any new content. How difficult or easy would that be and where do I start?

Best way to learn is to open up other mods, poke at them, change values, and learn by doing.

I got it thanks to a walkthrough. There was a switch in one of the corridors, except you have to wait a few seconds an THEN the stairs BEHIND you come down, so I never noticed what it did before.
I'm in the next map now. Cool game, but there are a couple of shitty stuff progression wise. Also I'm pretty sure I sequence broke the first level, after wandering for a while I made a jump that I thought I wasn't supposed to do (because the ground showed that steps were supposed to go up but I never found the way to make them go up)

So, I've been doing a Project MSX mod for personal use, but I guess I'll release it eventually, when I sort things such as credits, and more polishing.

It's mixed with Brutal Doom. (this is the most messy part right now)

There are some changes to the MSX weapons, mainly the Nail Shotgun, which has 2 more shells and it's now a Dragon's Breath shotgun, dealing half fire, half shotgun damage.

There are 3 more weapons, and deployable minigun turrets.
There also enhaced version of the monsters (taken sensibly from the bestiary, so they fit the rest) that can randomly replace corresponding monsters of their race.

There's also zombieman snipers with the MSX Gauss Rifle, which fucks you up. They are sneaky, sometimes you need to be clever or take cover.

Pic is flaregun revolver, replacing the standard pistol.
Primary allows you to blow bodyparts out of monsters with explosive rounds.
Secondary is like TF2's detonator. You launch a flare which emits light and gets attached to enemies. Clicking again blows it up and makes weak monsters to catch on fire.

Here's the Indra Cannon, which uses Suit Energy as ammo.
Primary is a lightning beam, you can regain energy if you keep the enemy tracked in your sight while shooting.
Secondary is a repulsion effect.

Keep in mind this mod is something I've been cooking up for my personal enjoyment, not some kind of professional mod, or even balanced for multiplayer.)
But I guess I'll release it eventually for the lulz

Well if it's just one bit of rebalancing on Doom's weapons then I guess I would beef up the pistol a bit. It doesn't have to become strong but it's quite obviously the weakest weapon by far in Doom. The best way to make it stronger is probably upping the fire rate and damage a bit.

I mean, I love how the game goes away from the classic FPS formula with this exploration, puzzles and levels connected with a hub. Also it's fucking beautiful and the enemy design is excellent. I however feel that it doesn't have enough weapons, I would rather have 1 character with 6-7 weapons than 3 characters stuck with the same 3 weapons most of the time.

The problem is that as far as the puzzles are concerned, there is at least one bullshit per episode (1 episode = 1 world consisting of hub + several other maps), like a hidden switch or not being clear on what you're supposed to do or what the switch you just pressed did. it gets really aggravating, but then again; when you finally fullfil a puzzle and reach a new world it feels very rewarding.

It's been said before, but the best way to do a hexen mod imo is zelda style open world. Dungeons with powerups/weapons that are needed to access other dungeons (changing the flight inv item to have a cooldown rather than be single use for instance), monsters that respawn (or new ones that take their place) as the game goes on. Collectables/npcs for lore exposition and side quests (though I'd keep an item shop/money out of it). Hell you could keep the same story, or expand upon it, so long as you fleshed the world out better.

And yeah, naturally, more weapons per class. A full 8 would be nice, but even just 6 per class would suffice...

Most complaint I've heard suggest the contrary actually. I don't particularly care a lot either way.
It's alright. Can lag some older computers a bit, specially on Intel cards because they can't into OpenGL apparently. Faster weapon switching is pretty good. Modified chaingun looks kind of bad. New plasma gun sprite is alright but nothing spectacular. Sounds vary in quality (and volume too, blood falling on water can be pretty loud).
Other mods you should check out that are similar in scope to Beautiful Doom are Particle Fire Enhancer and Smooth Doom.
Special mention to eriguns that while doesn't change monsters or decorations, the new weapons sprites are glorious and the sounds are bretty gud too.

That was one aspect that I never quite liked about the original game.

I mean, I understand why it was done, it's efficient to render, and on old hardware with low resolution, it worked fine, you didn't really see the stuff off in the distance as well so it being made darker didn't quite matter as much.
Problem is, with higher resolutions, this becomes rather glaring, I don't like how things and textures bleed out into palette messes at a distance, or in the dark for that matter (while things remained somewhat bright when close in the dark).

It feels like the beautiful sprites and textures don't quite get to fully shine in software mode, with OpenGL, you get unlimited colors, the game can display things in the dark without the colors bleeding into a vague mess (which, if you want to get picky, can be considered more realistic as it gets harder to distinguish colors the darker it is, but shut up), I feel that the game looks so much better, I love the textures and sprites of the original game, they have a certain charm to them so many games lack these days, and I love being able to see them better.

Also, true freelook without warping or autoaim is the shit, it really makes the game feel free.

I think zdoom has different physics from vanilla Doom. Aside from that, there seems to be enough compatibility options to make it behave pretty close to Vanilla.

He could be cross-dominant. Prefers left hand and right eye, which could be why he holds shouldered weapons on his right side and onehanded ones with his left.

Just one change? I couldn't pick one.

Make punching air not wake up monsters.
Make pistol more accurate.
Increase damage of pistol and cg, so the chaingun would be the firepower option, and the pistol would be the accuracy option.
Make SSG shoot 14 pellets, but tighten the spread and speed up reload to compensate so overall it does more damage than the normal sg over time, but not as accurate and eats shells faster. That's messing with a classic weapon, though, probably wouldn't be well recieved.
Speed up rockets a little.

this combination leads to a sudden abundance of maps that all have a similar style, and become a victim to fashion.

I used to make maps back in the 90's, and had to round things off by hand, I remember.

The overused gothic textures were mostly because of Quake, but I think CC4, though used often can't really be more overused than vanilla. If you stop thinking about it as a novelty and more as an expansion it's more natural. Personally I just like the texture set. It's nice to have textures that fit most occasions.

As for the art, I think a balance between detail and form is best. Too many maps these days are over-gilded, and it ends up being distracting or obstructive. Putrifier might be pretty as hell, but it's not any more fun than a well thought out vanilla style map. I try not to get too hung up on ever wall being unique to the point of clutter, and keep the detail in out of reach areas, or non-invasive.

I don't feel singled out, I get what you're saying. I just think vanilla style maps are one way of doing things and modern texture/techniques are another. If I get sick of one I return to the other.

It's difficult to create a perfect mapset. Hell, even Ribbiks in my eyes made some major mistakes on particular maps in stardate/SWTW whether is was fight design or music choice.

BTSX E2 looks very pretty imo but can be difficult to navigate at times and I think it plays very safe with fights. They aren't terrible in any form but the overall variety is lower than most mapsets I've come across.

I would still consider it a top tier mapset and crazy fun to simply explore if nothing else. Music is top notch as usual. The doomworld folks seem to have some crazy vendetta against some of the mapmakers making it hard to take the reviews seriously.

Smooth Doom probably. Smooths out weapon and monster animations and enhances sounds with the actual original sounds, along with some other stuff that you can turn off if you want, like new decorations, alternate monsters, doom64 weapons, etc.
Beautiful Doom is pretty too, and has some minor balance changes.
Polished Skull changes somewhat heavily gameplay aspects but you can turn them all off. Enhances sounds and animations and adds some nice effects.

I am about 1/3 done with my angled vanilla weapons wad. I've collected various sprites to start off of in various states of completion--the only thing I still need is a Plasmagun sprite. It's "Extreme edition" 14 pk3s and they're ordered by numbers. I couldn't find regular sperg edition so I got this. Fuck doing command line, now that I know there is a regular sperglord that actually comes in one pk3 instead of this gay shit. 250 mbs of "high def skins" and other things that might actually good but the problem is that you can't load them seperatly and I usually mess up with command lines when it comes to games. I'm playing without y axis because I never played DooM when I was younger, so I figured I should play it traditional before I start manipulating it for further fun. Not sure yet. I'm not especially picky with it at the moment, though, since the sprites are widescreen now and don't especially stand out much. While I'm not 100% happy with how they're Duke Nukem 64 sprites, which is probably the most recognizable source of sprites in the Doom scene, replacing it has become a bit of a low priority now since the sprites technically work as it is.

If it does get replaced, though, I would definitely like a drum-fed sawed-off grenade launcher. Something one-handed and stubby, without a scope.
The Duke 64 launcher already sort-of-kind-of fills this role, though, so I guess it'd just need a little editing to polish up and make look cool.

At the moment, I'm currently working on replacing the last two non-demonic enemies (the spiders) and currently fiddling around more with death sprites. Since I don't have explicit permission to use the Brutal Doom sprites, I'll be phasing them out a little bit at a time--I'd rather not re-use stuff from other wads unless the author specifically says "yeah it's okay" either in their readme/in a forum post/personal contact.
This will, however, also include Iron-Maiden-specific death sequences. Meatier punch-gibbing, ho!

1. oops, tried to suicide into the exit damage sector. didn't work.
2. one quick resurrection later. this was my only death, it was otherwise a UV max run. despite now being familiar with this map and being able to beat it without saves, it seems i still spent much time running around in empty space.

also one can reach the exit without either of the keys, which i find interesting. it seems the keys are only needed to access the hidden area adjacent to the start position, which i am now sure is intended to have a BFG or something in it. but there's nothing there besides an extra 100 cells.
