Most console RPGs are one-shot deals. Once you beat the end boss, that's it. No going back and completing side-quests now that the world is saved, no using those saved up left over mega-elixirs, no beating those uber-end-game bosses *after* beating the main big baddie... This abrupt end to 40+ hours of gameplay makes me not even want to complete the game sometimes.

What are some console-based RPGs that allow you to continue after completing the main story? Bonus points for games that allow you to defeat the end boss in different ways and have it make a difference!

The Tales series does this in certain ways.

It isn't outright new game+, but you can purchase things for your new playthrough with bonus points, including all your old equipment and abilities, or 10x EXP Bonuses or things of that sort.

Even things like this can be a nice incentive to keep going. I wonder though, is it just the same game over again, or can things be significantly different on another playthrough? I have never played any of The Tales series.

Depends on the game. Some of them only offer certain things on a New Game+, and some...don't.

Chrono Cross's replayability relies on doing the same things, but with different party members. Mostly in the acquisition of those party members. The different skills, weapons, dialogue, element grids, and minor quest variations make for interesting new game+ replays. Unfortunately, I have played it to death at this point.

Doing some googling shows Lufia II as having a New Game + mode that is similar to Chrono Trigger. Checking out some videos on YouTube, it definitely seems like something I could get into.

There are some major story variations in Chrono Cross, I mean two places can drastically change depending on how you go thorugh it. That plus the ususal NG+ variety with 40+ characters makes it the most replayable RPG I can think of.

Lufia II (and FoD and TLR for that matter) have a "Retry" mode after beating the game once. It just increases how much EXP and money you get after a battle (either 2x or 4x more, I believe).

What Lufia II does different is that after beating Retry you get a GIFT mode, which locks you in the Ancient Cave but lets you customize your party however you choose, essentially turning a new file into an endless RPG roguelike.
