Just finished the movie now.

It wasn't great...
But it wasn't horrible either.

The practical effects were fun (especially Mecha mothesis)

Sound/Music was perfectly fine.

Acting was surprisingly good by everyone but James. James seems like a side character in his own movie actually.

I would not watch this again, besides maybe to listen to the lewd sex scene again. Will always watch his new web series episodes though.

If James wants to put a ten minute giant robot scene with an actual dude in a robot suit smashing a model city, everyone will throw money at him

If a studio was paying for it, they'd tell him to fuck off or at least use CGI

The film business is full of bullshit, there are scads of movies that couldn't get made because they had too small budgets so they just cranked up the asking price and it got made, but then the movie sucked ass because the studios got to hack it to bits

Make no mistake. This is the movie James wanted to make, through and through. The real problem will come if/when he decides to do his next feature length film and it isn't AVGN related at all

It's sad that these things were so much more popular overseas than in the USA, because it was American companies who produced all these things, but they couldn't find a broad enough audience at home.

But that's really their fault. In the 1980s, no parents thought they needed a digital budget, "BBS access to to world news and stocks," etc.

And more importantly, games consoles like the NES were sold at toy stores for a couple hundred bucks -- a cheap way to keep your kids entertained. I remember my old man (God rest his soul) back in the day saying that the NES Action Set was the best "babysitter I ever bought." Commodores, Apples, and IBMs were sold to adults.

AVGN and the others piss me off because thanks to them a CIB copy of FF2 costs $80+, Earthbound CIB costs $200+, so I'll never get to enjoy the games I had as a kid, flip through the manuals, thumb the box art, all of that, because I cannot afford to pay $1k for the 5 - 6 games that meant the most to me as a kid.

I guess I deserve to be called a loser for this, but I just don't like AVGN, Youtube k-rad Internet gamers, or all these other toilet-mouthed people.

I have a strict policy when it comes to rating movies.
Never go under 5, because no matter how much the movie sucked, someone tried really hard to make it and that counts. You mentioned a lot of films there to which I also gave 8s.
Indie movies & Hollywood productions are not the same, they might have the same rating from me, but Hollywood movies have no heart and what James did - has. James put a lot of effort into this and he does not deserve a bad rating even if the movie was as bad as The Room, which thankfully - isn't. It's a solid movie that I look forward to rewatch with friends every now and then which can't be said about Gladiator/Shawshank Redemption/Goodfellas, those movies grow old after 1 watch, no replay value to 'em.

That said I surprisingly enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting much (the web series is hit or miss) and I had only heard good things from the backers so I was cautiously optimistic.
I actually felt like the worst part was the 'review' at the end. It was unfunny and felt forced.

AVGN isn't too much of an issue there, he's been doing his crap for a long time, and you could still get Earthbound CIB for $60-70 in 2007. By the end of 2010, it was up to $100. 7/10. (5/10 is average) It's a little rough. If you're the kind of person that dwells on little mistakes in movies, then this is not the movie for you, but if you can look past that (this is an amateur production after all) then there are a lot of really great moments in the film. I've seen it twice already and am excited for it to be released in 1080p. Some funny/awesome moments from the film: "Go for the gun!" Conga line. "Don't be paranoid." "Take me to your leader." Any scene with Deathmwothics. The cameos. "I hid them in the game cartridges!" When the army girl imploded. "Nice to meet you too, babe." Carter's mom.

I honestly don't know what a lot of you guys are going on about the movie being terrible. It wasn't a AAA blockbuster but it wasn't particularly bad at all. Considering all the B-movies I've seen, it was a pretty solid B-movie. There weren't any times I laughed out loud but a good six or so times I chuckled.

The scene in the bar where the chick asked James to sign her tits was completely superfluous and should have been omitted completely.

The ET game being unplayable not because it was simply a bad game but because it was actually designed as the map to Area 51 was a good twist.

The McButter character was horribly written. Her dialogue was fucking atrocious half the time.

Cooper should have just been replaced with Mike. Given the fact that the movie fully acknowledges the Nerd episodes, having a token black guy replace Mike just felt out of place.

The military characters' uniforms and props were just plain bad. Just because they wore generic clothing camouflage did not keep them from looking like shit. That just looked like a sloppy shortcut they took in production.

The catfight dynamic, even if they got meta about it, was stupid and cliched and not funny.

The scene in the rural village where they kept smashing into crates and the Humvee got stopped by two guys carrying a pane of glass was a good gag.

The fan appearances all throughout the film got old very quickly. A lot of those short scenes seemed completely unnecessary like they were just throwing them in there to increase runtime.

James' acting in the snippets of the in-movie Nerd episodes people were watching was shit compared to the actual episodes. It came across as "lol he's being loud therefore funny xDxD" and killed any immersion.

6/10 wasn't bad, probably won't watch again but enjoyed it

The acting was very poor, even considering the budget and where it came from. James doesn't show his typical nerd touch for a second. Also, it never really was that funny. Upsides: some fun references to old games and consoles and a smoking hot female lead character

Well, the movie was shit. I couldn't even watch 10 minutes and I'm a fan of the episodes.

Why can't retro game "fans" make games that look like what they're trying to imitate? The opening montage was just so cringeworthy not because of the nerdy fans but because of the fake games he was reviewing due to copyright (I assume)

They looked like fucking indie flash games. Indie artists can't get their heads out of their ass for one second and have to try to make the "best" looking pixel art possible, so it took me right out of it straight away. Even the nerd being mad at them inbetween was no good, it's like he missed the point of his own show.

Then James shitty acting didn't mesh with the other character's relatively good acting. He never could write dialogue worth a shit either. And why did he feel like a side character to the random black guy?

I got as far as what I think was the girl from the trailers about to say hi to James in the club then I turned it off. The realization that this black-rimmed dyed-hair gamer girl was going to have more than a bit part in the movie just made me groan and delete it.

Well fuck. I honestly wanted to like it but had my hopes dashed in the first ten minutes.
