SiN: The Movie is more like a vignette than a movie being it is only an hour long. Typical of the anime of the time, it puts action over substance and delivers nonstop explosions past the setup. It is a thrill of a ride and a lot better than some of the other crap they were pushing at the time. Also, it was on DVD, which was a treat.
For a PC gamer who was curious about anime, it was a way to test the waters and see what the fuss was about without dropping any serious dosh.

Okay, so the main characters have destroyed bit by bit the Romalian War Machine, freed most if not all of their puppet states, and have conquered its capital. Out of nowhere, the king of Romalia breaks the seal of the Dark One.
The Dark One then proceeds to kill the King of Romalia, Kukuru, and unleashes the apocalypse over the world.
After that, you see a scene of the cities explored by the heroes being flooded and burned down, while most of the world's population dies. Not only were all the good deeds of Arc, Elc & co for nothing, but you are at the end of the game. No opportunity to fix anything, and if this was not enough, Arc commits a heroic sacrifice after the last battle.

After you defeat the Dark One, the camera shows all the towns that he destroyed, as well as the villagers' dead bodies (including some familiar faces).

Elc: "It makes me wonder what we were fighting for. Arc died, and for what? So we could inherit this desolate and hopeless future? We didn't stop the world from ending, we survived it. And now we are left with nothing".

Truly a depressing ending.

The world seems all right in ATL3 though? At least for the few hours I played it, really long ago. I guess it couldn't have been that bad?

Most continents completely vanished, and a great part of the world is innabitable.
But yeah, it's been 10 years since The Great Disaster (as they call it in ATL3), and people eventually resumed their lives.
ATL3 starts very light-hearted compared to both previous games but turns dark really fast...poor Chongara, man.

Everything about Alien Soldier features something I want to see more of, be it a sequel, an OVA or something else.

Pic related to thread, the fabled Ultima Anime.
