Why is this game so hated and why they insist on bs fallacies such as "nostalgia googles" whenever someone defends it? Seriously, this game is kinda ahead of its time, has great graphics, memorable soundtrack and interesting gameplay.
I dont get why people praise a lot of 80s sidescrollers that were much more flawed than altered beast, yet they love to loath this game. Problably one of the most injusticed games of all time.

>> No.1903739

Because it controls horribly and is pretty shallow.

>> No.1903743

that game is beast

>> No.1903756

i remember thinking it was awesome as a kid. the last few times i've gone back to it though, i usually quit at around level 3. It's so incredibly simplistic and repetitive and slow-moving, without any of the conveniences of games following it to distract you from those facts

The movement is a bit clunky, and the camera pushing you is kinda annoying. But seriously, compare that to the cheap ass bullshit ninja gaiden trilogy puts you on the NES or even compare it with the ghost and goblins. That game has some of the most horrible jump controls in any game ever (which capcom still re-used even on the psp sequel and even on the sir arthur in mvc3). Yet, even the NES version of ghosts and goblins is remembered as a classic.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE

>> No.1903783

It's not a bad game per se, it's just generic and forgettable. The only reason anyone even remembers it is because it was the original pack-in game for the genesis.

If you're gonna pull the comparison card then let's just have a look at some arcade side scrollers that were released the same year as Altered Beast.

Yeah... Stop making excuses for the game, it was super slow and shallow even compared to contemporaries on release. I can't believe you would even attempt to compare NES Ninja Gaiden's super fast and fluid controls to it either.

Altered Beast. Splatterhouse. Final Fight. Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja. In retrospect, my childhood at the arcades was full of buff dudes punching shit.

>> No.1904169

It's a very simple, easy game to pickup so did pretty good in the arcades. I used to play the hell of it, along with Golden Axe, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and Aliens (the 1990 game by Konami).

And I never found a Rastan machine in the arcades, but I more than made up for it with MAME. Same thing with Black Tiger...

I think it's cheap and controls bad, but it's not that bad, it has good graphics and nice music. Not a bad game in my opinion, but not a top tier arcade or genesis game by any means.

I think it's cheap and controls bad, but it's not that bad, it has good graphics and nice music. Not a bad game in my opinion, but not a top tier arcade or genesis game by any means when you have games like Revenge of the Shinobi, Streets of Rage 2, Quackshot, E-Swat etc.

Ok, I have several questions about Genesis port.

Is there any tactic against boss 2, besides just spamming electricity? I always thought that was cheap, and tried fighting him the standard way: dodging eyeballs and shooting. But it doesn't seem like eyeballs were designed to be dodged.

What's the tactic to boss 3?

Is the game beatable on no damage? By the time I get to stage 5, I have 0 lives. Most of them are taken by boss 3 and boss 4 (which I have a tactic for, but he takes forever to beat, and still manages to hit me at random times). Then I die once and it's game over for me. All the youtube walkthroughs use the continue code. All the text walkthroughs say: "if you have game over use the continue code". I understand this is an arcade port, and that in arcades buying continues with money is legit. But using a cheat code for a home version doesn't seem legit. Did anyone actually beat this with just stock 2 lives?

I did, final boss is stupidly easy once you figure out what to do, so you won't even need any extra lives.

Ninja Gaiden is inherently fun to play. It is fast-paced, and the controls are super responsive.

As an arcade game it is pretty fantastic, but as a console game it wasn't that hot.

I personally love it, and I especially LOVE the sound design. As in when you defeat the first boss, and then that portal opens. THAT eerie sound that plays while that massive head appears...

Yes as other have said, there is not much to it except a basic beat em up experience. But honestly I will say it had better graphic design that Golden Axe.

I'm actually on the edge of getting the 3D Altered Beast for 3DS... but knowing how little replay value there is, I'd rather get something else.

this is pretty much the reason i agree with. i mean i played this a lot as a kid in hard mode and beat it, but years later out of practice just opened my eyes.

The arcade ending is funny too

I wish that this game's type of upgrade system was used more often.
