Can we agree this was the best of the trilogy?
DKC1 was too short and DKC2 was boring.

I'll agree that it's better than DKC1.

It always seems to be that the opinions on this game are so decisive, either the best or the worst of the trilogy. Can't it just be inbetween?

this. they're way too simple.

>> No.1899786

The game has a pretty boring soundtrack (while the previous two was among gaming's best) and generally feel a bit lacking in soul... I can't really explain why though. Feels like a product of "this shit sells" rather than "we really want to make another Donkey Kong".

Grew up loving DKC3 the most. Now I feel subjectively and objectively it's

DKC2 > DKC3 = DKC1

>> No.1900130

Is it just me or is DKC3 a little bit lacking in terms of enemies? Nothing really dangerous you'd want a barrel to throw at like the hook throwers, sword guys, or blue cats in DKC2. Just loads and loads of robot buzzsaw bees.

I think it was the most interesting in terms of environmental differences. DKC2 was kind of really drab. I also loved the bonuses in DKC3

I always thought DKC3 was the worst of the three. Like it's not a shit game or anything but it was the weakest title. I love DKC1's music the most, but I like DKC2's gameplay more.

DKC3 is to DKC2 like DK64 is to Banjo Kazooie.

>> No.1900589

I liked the environment best (Canada basically) with the best level themes (mills, boardwalks over water, tree levels, factory levels, waterfalls, cliffs, factories, snow, pipes) and the best graphics in the trilogy (especially the water levels). Best minecart levels, all the levels have interesting gimmicks at times (stupid other times). I liked the bear fetch quests and freely exploring the map.

The level design is unfortunately a step down and the game's design revolves around gimmicks that don't mesh. Kiddy can fuck himself, he can't beat Diddy or DK. Enemy design is worst in series and music is not quite as good as Wise's music in 2 (but not bad at all its just holy shit what an act to follow).

Overall 2>1>3, but all are great

Honestly I consider it the worst of the trilogy. Relied far too much on gimmicks for each level to artificially make it challenging, like that pipeline level where your controls are reversed.

I always really liked 3, it had a lot of unique level mechanics to keep things fresh. Unlike DKC1 which starts to rehash things early on. 2 is my favourite game of all time though, I just love the setting and music.

I rented the shit out of DKC1 and was bought DKC3 one xmas, never played DKC2 until I discovered emulation. Only thing I can really say bad about dkc3 is that some (not all) of the art was more cartoony and not in keeping with the other games (the green bees, the underwater levels etc). Music was fantastic (not as catchy as DKC1's themes but more atmospheric). I'd have to say if you played the first world and quit i'd understand why you thought it was shit.

3 was alright in terms of gameplay but the soundtrack just wasn't the same without David Wise

Err... No. Just no. The minecart levels in 3 were a HUGE step up.

3 also had some lousy level design - the mill levels are a fucking cancer -, but the minecart stages were basically perfect.
>>1904701
This. DKC 3's soundtrack is fantastic. And David Wise's version for the GBA is just... Owww. So bad.

Overall, I'd say...

>Level Design 3 > 2 > 1
>Enemies 2 > 1 ~ 3
>Kongs 2 > 3 > 1
>Animal Buddies 2 ~ 3 > 1
>Art 3 > 2 > 1
>Music 3 ~ 2 > 1
>Bosses 3 ~ 2 > 1

3 & 2 about equal for me overall, with 1 pretty clearly behind them.

It was so unnecessary to replace all those songs. I love the more subtle ambient nature of Fischer's work. It fit the game well, where as the stuff Wise did for the port felt really half assed. Especially that Frosty Frolics. Disgusting.

It's personal preference. I agree about most of the port's OST being half-assed, which is what makes me wonder why he wasn't working on the main game. Maybe he couldn't get his creative juices flowing. I also realized the port didn't come out until 2005, nearly a decade later

DKC3's soundtrack just didn't feel much like the first 2 games to me. It's a similar complaint I see from fans regarding the Sonic and Streets of Rage trilogies. They changed too much

It disappointed me at the time, but in hindsight it's nice that Fischer fans got DKC3 and Wise fans, Tropical Freeze

I never understand people hating on 3's music.

My personal preference is 2>3>1

1 really suffers from lacking a proper bonus room system and no secret world

was pretty meh with 3, and despised 64

i had heard that rare went into hyper-busy mode due to the upcoming launch of the 64 during DKC3's development, so i always just figured they split up the team that made DKC2 so good and sent them to work on other projects

Genius bait, mate. This is a DKC trilogy thread now. DKC2 is one of my favorite SNES games of all time, but I recently decided to give DKC3 a second chance and it ain't that bad. I guess I really like all three of them.

3's music wasn't bad at all. In fact, it's better that most of the games of the era, but it was a huge departure from 2's epic score. It's a cool soundtrack, but it simply can't compete with Wise's work on DKC2.

I like them all and if I get the urge to play one I have to play all of them in chronological order.

Similar to what I do with Zelda and the 2d Metroid games, I play them as if they are one long game.
