I don't know what it is or why, but I have become interested in owning a PC Engine or more specifically, a Duo.
I have never played a PCE game and I have only vague memories of even seeing a TG16 when I was young... Yet, its an urge.
Having looked at eBay I am saddened to see the price of these things, considering how well I have heard they sold in the day. What is the TRUE value of these units?
I signed up for PCEngineFX but, sticking with tradition, it is taking a long time to get admin approval...

The TRUE value of these units is whatever current market value is, you ding dong

The Duos are actually very unreliable due to capacitor rot. What you want is a Duo-R, the next model in the line that was only released in Japan. They’re much more reliable. Search eBay for a seller named doujindance. They sell Duo-Rs modded to play hu-card games from all regions. CD games are region free. Just be patient because once they put a unit up for sale they sell very quickly. Also, you'll need to source your own power supply.

This. Don't bother with a Duo unless you have a way of replacing the capacitors.

As a layman in all things electrical, what does capacitor rot actually entail?

>> No.1895797

>>1895784
Capacitors are like mini-batteries soldered onto circuit boards. Even opened up a TV remote with old corroded batteries in it? Same thing. The Duo's capacitors are very prone to rot are there are LOTS of them. It's a big job to re-cap a Duo even if you're handy with a soldering iron.

And everyone on this board knows that ebay prices are the highest market available. Period.

I feel I could replace bad caps, so thats not really an issue. Im sure it is time consuming but honestly it can't be much different than soldering a shit ton of tabbed batteries... (I do know the caps are surface mount)

The Duo R looks cooler, that's reason enough.

It's worth more because it's a later, less common model. Also because it's more reliable.

As for buying any Duo model, PCEFX is even more paranoid about resellers than /vr/ is so don't expect being able to score one too quickly. You could also check out some Japanese auction sites like Rakuten or Yahoo Japan, but you will most likely need some kind of proxy shipping service as most Japanese sellers do not ship internationally.

>>1895895
Am I missing something on Rakuten? Everything listed states "Not available" or zero items show up. I have never really looked around on it, though.
I did think of Yahoo Auctions JP - there are a few PCEs listed and a broken pair of duos but sellers will not ship to USA. Thanks for the ideas

I got my standard duo on ebay and in the listing it said overhauled in the listing and when I popped it open all brand new caps and I paid what they go for normally. So just read the listings to see if you can find one that is "overhauled" or "refurbished". As far as game collecting goes Im pretty much done collecting for the most part, pic related is what I have (plus gradius recently) am I missing anything super essential? Games like Darius 2 and Gradius 2 I already have on saturn. I got the PC engine gradius cause it has the extra level from the MSX version It's kind of an embarassment for a PC engine shooter though worse slowdown than any other game in 1990 too no excuse for that

Devil Crush/Crash MD is way better than Fury imo. The music is magical.

That's a nice set.
I just downloaded about 350 Roms to play around with...see if there's justification for this madness.
Kind of a lot going on in my life right now to drop $200+ on a console

Have you even been to a retailer that deals with retro systems? One one of those con-artists near me wanted $270 for a Panasonic FZ10 3DO. And some dumbfuck was actually going to buy it. You can get a superior Panasonic FZ1 3DO one on ebay for a $100.

>> No.1900597

Well, sat down and played a slew of pce games today on an emulator. Fun but not mind blowing enough for me to spend that kind of money. Maybe in time I'll learn to love these games and maybe then I'll get one.
Thanks guys

Have to admit, I checked out racketboy's reviews and a bunch of videos as well. Wasn't too impressed. Spriggen, Gates of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, and Star Soldier looked pretty awesome though. Would have been fucking brilliant to experience during the 90s.
