Are leap of faiths a good or bad thing in games?

>> No.1893149

>>1893139
They need to be indicated somehow. Randomly dropping secrets at the bottom of seemingly-lethal pits is not good. If it's hinted at, it can be fun though.

>> No.1893170

If it's anything like that one level from Tazmania, it's a horrible thing.

>> No.1893176

It's bad because it punishes playing well. In most games if you're good you'll never fall into a pit at all, and nobody wants to jump in to every pit on each level in the hopes of randomly finding a secret.

For bonus areas, sure.

Someone who cares about 100% games might disagree, though. I was fine with it in DKC.

That depends on your faith doesn't it.

These.

>> No.1893721

Whenever you jump down a pit at the bottom of the screen, you will end up in one of two places:

1 is at your respawn point (platformer rules)
2 is at the bottom of the pit (action-adventure "Metroid" rules)

A game should pick one of these and stick with it. Finding a secret at the bottom of an otherwise deadly hole is about as intuitive as insta-dying from a vertical room transition in SotN.

>> No.1893748

>>1893721
It's called a secret for a reason, duke nukem didn't have to make their secrets stand out in anyway to be found. If you retexture it kind of defeats the purpose of being secret.

>> No.1893756

>>1893748
And how many of the secrets in Duke Nukem are in places that would instakill you in normal circumstances?

Yeah this guy gets it. There needs to be something "off" to distinguish it from just normal falls

Agreed. Even if it's an optional secret, it shouldn't require you to do something counterintuitive. That's pretty much the definition of artificial difficulty.

I think most people agree that having random-ass pits be secrets is kind of stupid, but what about extremely convoluted bizarre secrets that involve a huge number of specific actions to unlock? I always loved those.

They're the very definition of artificial difficulty.

totally fair and not "muh artificial difficulty" as it was made by "muh nintendo" where my dad works.

I love them too I always wonder how people found out about those on their own, that room wasn't discovered till like 10 years after the game came out though, right?

I don't think it falls under the game's difficulty. Most of these secrets, while they give you some bonuses, are really pretty irrelevant to normal play, and even speedruns won't use them. They're more like easter eggs.

Pic related is another good one. In Divine Divinity you could, by way of an extremely convoluted series of specific actions, reach a secret zone where you could find the videogame programmers living in a pit and kill programming bugs

Leaps of Faith are generally bad game design. If you die without it "telling" you that it would kill you beforehand, that's the designer's fault.

This wasn't actually intentional.
After the contest was won and the room was to be included, some of the developers tried to block this from ever being accessible because they felt that it reflected poorly on the game's integrity. Another set of developers felt that it was unfair to Chris to not include the room, and put it back in. This went back and forth until the end of development.

The room is in the game, but inaccessible by normal means.

Chris must have been devastated.
