My son's name is Link and he is almost exactly the same age as /vr/. I want for his first video game memory to be The Legend of Zelda, preferably on a rugged inexpensive mobile device that I can put ROMs on since I want it to have a no-damage Game Genie code always on so it's just about the mechanics and exploration.

He understood that the Wiimotes worked the TV though and when I switched us over to a little MCPC he quickly came to understand that it's the Logitech now. He's getting to be able to do some of the for-babby games on our smartphones so his first instinct is that everything is touch-screen but a few weeks ago he was watching me play Vagrant Story on my Xperia Play and even though he went for touch screen first I was able to get him to hold it right and move around, open and close menus and move the highlight up and down on them etc.

I don't know if I'm going to get him an X-Play of his own and just ruggedize it or if I'm going to try to get something like a Dingoo A320 or JXD A1000 instead. I WISH I could use some of those $50/dozen Chinese handhelds but it doesn't seem like any of the dirt-cheap ones can have their ROMs changed out.

Why do that to your kid?

Just get a modded Wii or something and put it on a TV. It'll play a ton of Nintendo games and you'll be able to have some quality co-op with Donkey Kong Country Returns. I played it with my 3yo cousin and it was quite fun - he'd hop on my back when he was scared of something, etc.

it's also significantly harder than the first quest. like, nasty mean "i'm not sure if this is fun anymore" harder. working your way through it will make you grow chest hair, but it will probably not add to your enjoyment of Zelda 2 in any way.

a lot of people don't care much for 2 at all - in some ways it's similar and in many ways it seems like a totally different kind of game. it's been said more than once that it would have been better received if they'd called it something else entirely and not tried to jam it into the Zelda storyline somehow.

I always find it funny that people think that "concept art" isn't what's used in the promo art of games from the 80s. Unless you mean the "art" used for the sprites drawn on grid paper. At which point, it would just be codes for colour written in.

Link's hair has always been Golden Brown. It's just that his hair is more golden than it its brown nowadays. If you're insistent on the concept art idea, for the original game, Link's hair was brown in shade and blonde in light.

That's like thinking that the art for FFIV in Nintendo Power is the REAL concept art and that what Yoshitaka Amano drew was just "for the ads".

Nintendo Power WAS used for promos and it WAS the official Nintendo magazine. Nintendo may not own it now, nor have they for years, but in the beginning they did.

And manuals rarely included concept art.

I recently played LoZ for the first time on an actual NES.
Game very much holds up till this day. Gameplay is fun and challenging.

But come on... The hyper secrets are ridiculous. Congratu-fucking-lations if you found them by dedicated burning and bombing everything, but that shit is not good game design. The game grinds to a halt those couple of times you need to find those secrets to progress.
I guess having the map would have helped, but it wouldn't change the fact that you'd have to systematically burn and bomb everything aimlessly.
And please don't go "modern gamers" either. This is the stuff we used to share in the school yard pre Internet-era. That or Nintendo-Power...

>> No.1897940

>but it wouldn't change the fact that you'd have to systematically burn and bomb everything aimlessly.

Video game "secrets" were huge in the mid 80s, especially in action-adventure games. Push random things, attack every object in the game, hidden doors, money, and shops... It was all just randomly placed without any hints and players were simply expected to try everything.

Druaga was far, far more cryptic than Zelda was, and it was an arcade game. Some floors are cleared like in zelda (kill all enemies in room) but some need a specific sequence of events.

>walking in certain patterns (for example, move to each corner of the room and then face south)
>only attacking one specific enemy on a floor, or killing them in a specific order
>deliberately walk into fire or some other enemy attack on a specific floor to make a chest or key appear
>fake chests that require trial and error, or a puzzle to reveal the real chest

It was a hard as fuck arcade game without a continue option. Amusingly enough there actually is a continue option but it is a secret as well.

Only trial and error and "local arcade tribal lore" made it possible to beat that game. Zelda was similar only it was "local schoolyard tribal lore" that helped spread secrets from kid to kid, school to school.

The original Legend of Zelda's not a bad game by any means. It just always felt bland to me, I thought that was it's biggest problem. It's not even hard, even on the second quest. You can immediately get the blue ring, get rich from the money making games, and get a couple of hearts at the start if you look around for a few minutes.

Being able to go anywhere from the start is cool in any game, but for the original LoZ, every area being a rectangle and all of the dungeons feeling like the same exact thing doesn't really do it any favors.

I'm not even comparing it to other games in the series, even for an NES game at the time, it feels bland.

I started replaying Adventure of Link though, and forgot how fun it could be. I don't know if I prefer it over the traditional style of Zelda games, but I'd definitely play a newer Zelda with it's style of gameplay. Maybe if the ever put one on the eShop.

for that matter it might be technically possible to beat level 8 without a sword but dear god it would be hard. clearing out all those rooms full of blue darknuts when nothing works on them but bombs? I mean yeah, technically possible, but it's also technically possible to win the lottery.

then again maybe i'm wrong...I've seen people do some shit on youtube that I would have sworn was impossible. I should probably research it.

also, is it possible to do a no-sword run in the second quest? the free 100 rupies guy isn't behind the trick wall anymore, so I don't think you can ever bootstrap yourself a blue candle to get started.

the blue and red rings are Zelda's equivalent of armor. unfortunately the red ring isn't available until you can get into level 9 at the end of the game.

the blue ring costs an absurd amount of rupees and is in a hidden shop. unless you've been diligent about exploring the Overworld, you're probably going to need a cheat guide to get it.

in this game you are expected to methodically explore every possible screen and examine it for secrets. in fact, by the time you have the candle, the bombs, and the whistle, you can find a cave entrance on almost every screen in the overworld. some will give you money, some will give you heart containers, some will penalize you...

In a sense, it's a remake, but the dungeons are completely different ( they spell out St. Gigas for some reason ), and the overworld is a bit smaller.

Also, there is a day and night system. Darknuts roam the field at night, and you are only able to fight Ganon at night. There is also a heart piece you can only collect a a certain time, and you can permanently miss it.

There are also clock based random power-ups, like ininite arrows, bombs, instant kills, permanent sword beam, ect.

I've been playing LoZ for the first time too without guides and only the included half finished map. But in order to beat the game you only have to burn one bush or bomb one part of a mountain. Even that specific bush is in a really obvious place.

Are you seriously complaining about the optional "It's a secret to everybody?" spots? Those are only useful for gaining a fast amount of rupees. There are parts in dungeons where you can bomb walls but there's only 4 directions to bomb in and if you have the dun map it's pretty easy to tell what walls you have to bomb.

The game is filled with a lot of hints and easy to figure out things. Like the Lost Woods has an old lady you have to bribe in order for her to tell the secret same for the lost hills. Or the occasional old men that give hints for free.

The original story I read was that Zelda, form the first game, fell into a magic-induced slumber.

I think this story makes more sense.

Link sees darkness and evil on the rise, Zelda falls a sleep, and as he goes to wake her he learns that Ganon's followers are out to kill him.

It makes more sense than Link learning that Ganon's followers are after him, OH and an old Zelda princess has been sleeping for generations.

The quest begins when the Triforce on Link's hand begins to glow on his 16th birthday. This mark allows him to access the sleeping Zelda's room as the prophecy foretold. Ganon's minions notice this and go after him.

Now that SS pushed the timeline way back, it's hard to say if sleeping Zelda is still the first Zelda, although it is possible since North Castle is never visited in any other game so no one really knows what was going on in there. The Sleeping Zelda Legend is one of the most difficult events to place on the timeline.

Although I wonder which Zelda the creators of the animated series used.

Neither of those exist.
All-Stars ported the games to SNES and then prettied their graphics up. They're still the same old NES games, and in fact an old NES debug code for SMB3 still works on it's All-Stars version.

BS Zelda is the same deal, except various modifications were made to it to work with the Satellaview. Not to mention BS Zelda wasn't even developed by Nintendo.

So uh, yeah. Neither are remakes.

The SNES version is actually smaller in some places, plus the perspective is more head-on instead of strictly top-down so you can't go behind structures like you could in the NES version. You can see it clearly at fairy fountains and dungeons. Also the use of large trees instead of many small shrubs makes it seem smaller too.

First timer with Legend of Zelda here.

Was playing Majora's Mask but got tired of all that exploring and dealing with the plot that I just stopped before finding the first dungeon in the swamp and played this instead. Enjoying myself a lot more with the switch.

At dungeon four and looked online for two questions so far. First was making sure that there was a second dungeon somewhere as I walked for so long and had my doubts. The other was giving up my search for dungeon four blindly and found out I needed to go back to dungeon three and find that raft. Didn't think a key item would be hidden in that dungeon. After all I haven't done anything required with that boomerang, bomb, or blue piece of paper yet.

It used the same button code as the NES version to save. I'm not 100% but I think it was Start+Select at the same time. You always spawn at the overworld start or the entrance to a dungeon though, and only with 3 hearts. Saving was always a calculated risk.

Nah, saving is done by pressing start on controller 1 and then pressing up and a on controller 2. I don't think you could save the same way on the NES Classics, but there I think they emulated it with the emulator menu, accessed by pressing L and R simultaneously.

A map is not required, but it's advised. The original game came with a partially completed map.

I beat the game with no map or guide when I played it for the first time via Animal Crossing, so it can be done, it just may take some time.

While a guide isn't needed at all, it actually is good to get a few tips. If I remember right, the original concept of the game was to have players communicate to each other and exchange notes to help each other progress through the game. So really, there's no shame in it, you're just doing what the developer intended.
