So I know it's not really on topic, but I saw the game EYE: Divine Cybermancy mentioned a few times in these threads, I got it on cheap during a steam summer sale, and I'm trying it out now.

No fucking clue what I'm doing. Game doesn't tell you shit. The tutorials tell you HOW to do stuff, but not what stuff does. I just did a side mission thing... I think? I talked to some guy in that area with various vendors, and the training room, and then I was sent into a map, with hordes of annoying enemies coming at me, these weird chicks in white started attacking, and these weird chimp/xenomorph hybrid things. The game SEEMS fun, I just have no idea what the fuck I'm doing.

Yeah, I got the sprites for pol.wad it from NSDoom.wad, it lists that in the credits contained in the wad itself. I knew about it from downloading it off of kazaa, finding it when I downloaded final doom.

It was a modified iwad rather than a pwad, and it changed all the monsters in Doom.wad, as well as a bunch of different sounds for weapons and some minor changes to the bfg so it says zyklon b on it. All the rest was stuff done to the menus and graphics. It was made by actual neo-nazis.

Here's where the thing came from originally:

And then here's where I ended up downloading it from since the links on the original site are all broken:

>It was a modified iwad rather than a pwad
Fun fact: This was because in the original Doom EXE, you had to patch your IWAD with your PWAD to get graphics to show up. Later people made automatic patching tools to do this for us, but before they realized it was practically piracy it's just what they did.
Try loading up something that modifies not-textures or not-sounds with Chocolate Doom's -file option. Choco adds the -merge option to "merge" the file with your IWAD in RAM before hand.

Nothing really wrong with Brutal Doom. It's more a segment of the audience it tends it attracts. >> No.1884485

>So I am a huge brutal doom fan, it brought me out of a 2 or so year hiatus and I have been playing it with tons of maps
>last thread I saw someone accuse a guy of bait posting for asking why people don't like it, but my curiosity has the better of me here.

It is brought up a lot by people that are looking to start shit by asking in bad faith. Sometimes people jump the gun on people asking honestly as a result of this. It's unfortunate.

>why don't people like it? It is visceral, contains tons of rip and tear, and makes the game more challenging. is it really just hipster hate for being popular,

People only really seem to have a huge problem with the mod when it's touted as Doom 2.0, strictly better than vanilla, etc, or fans insist/complain everything else made by the community should be BD-compatible or oriented.

The flaws of the mod itself (not just taste) would probably be overly loud sounds, spaghetti code in the mod itself because the author is not a tidy coder, bugs due to spaghetti code, and it doesn't do a great job of crediting everyone that made the assets the mod uses or contributed to the mod. There was a much better than previous credits list released in the latest version but it still not comprehensive and some would say it over glorifies the authors own contributions. Really he needs to list a separate credits list to showcase the work of others, and a separate per resource one for those wishing to use the resources in their own work. Most mods do this but look at Samsara or Fractal Doom's credit list for a good example of this.

The author is also a pretty big asshole, though he appears to have gotten better as of late. Maybe he's getting better, maybe it's a consequence of posting on 4chan rather than a traditional forum. Who knows. If you ask I can go into lengths about his asshole behavior but it seems like bringing up past drama unnecessarily.

hey guys, i was hoping i could ask a really fucking annoying question

there's a multiplayer .wad that i played on zandronum a little over a year ago, i can't remember what it was called. you defended a base against waves of monsters, earned dosh with kills, and bought upgrades. there was a commander who could place buildings that you could use for better upgrades (culminating of course with a mech)

in it there was a fucking slammin' version of e1m8 (sign of evil) played on the electric guitar. i have literally been thinking about it almost every day for at least a year. please god help me track this down

>or are there some glaring flaws I am missing/superior alternative I should be playing?

The most BD like would probably be Brutal Doom Sperglord Edition. Beautiful Doom and NashGore for where a lot of Brutal Doom's resources come from, Accessories to Murder is another popular mod, uses DoomNukem's weapon sprites he made for his Brutal Doom pack. Different but popular would be Project MSX. There are a number of other popular mods, either check the Cacowards or ZDoom forums. There is the SO YOU WANNA PLAY SOME DOOM? image that list a bunch too.

>> No.1884492

>is it really just hipster hate for being popular
No. We could spend an entire thread arguing over what the exact reasons are - in fact, that's exactly what happens about half the time someone asks this question - but the main issues are that 1) newbies tend to start with BD and never bother to learn that anything else exists; 2) Mark's kind of a cunt; and 3) he posts here.

Because you're going to get chewed out by haters for "obvious bait" and shit

>It is visceral, contains tons of rip and tear
This is exactly the turn off for some people. Some sounds are extremely loud (or even had their volume turned up) which causes annoying loudness and sometimes sound clipping. Its annoying for some people.
The amount of gore is actually sometimes offputting for people, saying there's quite a lot of it.
The demons have many elements in them that make it more akin to torture porn. They wail and scream for you to end their torture which just makes you seem creepy and sadistic.
Additionally, Doom being a game from 1993, many people have toasters for computers. They come into this game not expecting the intense amount of gore things to slow their computers to a crawl.

>makes the game more challenging
It makes hitscanners bullshit. The rest of the game is actually easier. Armor is fucked all to hell and projectiles are still as slow as their normal Doom counterpart (and do just about as much damage compared to the super-fast hitscanners' fire rates) which makes them painfully underpowered. (Terrifying, considering many late-game monsters are projectile-throwers.)

Video related.

And lastly, while the mod was at it's peak in popularity, Sgt. Mark got a bit of a big head from it. He made some comments that I don't want to get into in fear of getting them wrong, but just know that they include statements that many people would consider horrible and there's a reason he's been banned from both ZDoom and Zandronum forums.

Now I'm going to hit send and see everyone telling you to stfu and you getting no answers. Sorry about that.

not that i disagree with you, but just my two cents:

>makes you seem creepy and sadistic
i'm pretty sure that brutal doom is heavily (HEAVILY) influenced by the infamous comic, where Doomguy is indeed creepy and sadistic. also, this is a personal thing, but i find that when I'm playing BD and i'm in the heat of battle, kicking that cacodemon into pieces and getting that Cruelty bonus just makes things feel a little more hectic and involved

>sound problems
i only had problems with literally one file and that's the "friendly marine being rescued laugh". it's fucking CRAZY loud. everything else sounds fine to me

>people are mad their toasters can't run it
if your PC can't run a .wad for a twenty year old game, i think you have bigger problems than the quality of the .wad to worry about

>> No.1884646

Automated, I use ImageMagick's montage command-line program

Here's the command I used to make that one, and I also throw the images I'm gonna use into their own folder.

montage.exe screen*.png -tile 3x4 -geometry +1+1 -quality 75 artica_b.jpg

3x4 for tile since there were 12 images total and figured that'd look best, +1+1 for geometry makes a 1px on all sides to separate each image you can do +0+0 for no lines whatsoever if you wanted, and 75 for the quality as I guessed it would make it small enough to upload. Check out that second link for more things you can do with montage, it can also help with making spritesheets too I believe.

>> No.1884651

When I say changing gameplay, that pretty much means adding anything that's not pure graphics or sound. Creating new weapons and NPCs requires fairly heavy coding, depending on how complex it is.

The best program for this kind of thing would be Slade 3. All the coding is done in decorate files. I'd suggest looking at the ZDoom wiki for info on decorate, and Realm 667 for examples of custom monsters/weapons/graphics made by other people.

>> No.1884656

Examples of changing gameplay:
>modifying monsters / weapons / items / HUD / playerclasses (DECORATE, ACS optional)

This seems like the place to ask because I'm not sure where else to go; I remember when flip-keyboard phones started becoming popular there was a turn based Doom RPG.

I never beat it due to my phone breaking shortly after getting the game, and it wasn't available on the next phone I had. I was wondering if anybody here has heard about it/knows how/where I can play it on PC?

A BIG part of Doom's appeal is the violence. It's bizarre to see a Doom fan being against this, especially considering all the controvery caused by the game in the past.

> They come into this game not expecting the intense amount of gore things to slow their computers to a crawl.

Doom 3 is slower, you're only in Hell for the very, very end of the game, you're constantly switching between flashlight and weapons, there's more story and atmosphere, etc.

Slower, you fight only 5 or so enemies at once at the very most, it's usually 1v1 against imps or 3v1 against zombiemen. Lots of audio logs and locker codes to collect

It's a faked picture. The screenshot has a little of Brutal Doom, a little of Complex Doom, a little of modified Nashgore (with super-hi-res blood sprites), and a lot of mishmash of other unnecessary enhancement mods, thrown into a Bloom filter, then blurred up/contrasted in Photoshop.

It was originally made in response to yet another "hi res" sprite project which scaled up and blurred the sprites.
It's not a mockery of people or of mods. I don't care what personal settings/mods you use, as long as you have fun. It's a mockery of how fucking ugly projects like that look.

The health pickups, for one, are really stupid. I hope they're placeholders.
Dodging is cool but it breaks vanilla maps. You're gonna need some original maps made with the new physics in mind.
The "whoops" is annoying as fuck, a good ol' grunt would've been better in its place. Where are you getting the voice from anyway?
The shotgun, being a SS replacement, is unavailable when trying to play doom.wad levels.

Glad you enjoy it! Unfortunately I'm going to need to break your heart on a few things. The health pickups are not placeholders, and there aren't any new maps coming outside of maybe one for the final battle.
That being said, though, once/if I get a VA I'll give the usefail a random chance between normal grunting and that. Like Duke Nukem's usefail being a random chance for a grunt or "WHERE IS IIIIIIIIIT".

While the mod is primarily for Doom 2, I'll see what I can do to accommodate Doom 1 wads. I'm not entirely sure if this is possible, but I'll see if I can do an ACS check for the mapname being EXMX and then change the spawns to normal shotguns instead.

Is the lack of maps deliberate or just due to a lack of time and energy? If it's the latter, would you include maps if someone else was willing to make them?

A lack of time and energy might have something to do with it, but it's also primarily that I'm not a good mapper.
I fiddle with maps every now and then and could crank out maybe one or two (made two for Cyberrunner, one for Samsara, two for Metrood, etc), but I don't really put any faith in my ability to make a full mapset for a specific gameplay mod.

Next, and this could be something that's planned in the future. What did a lot of those classic arcade hits have in common? Co-op play. Unless you already have it in mind, do some stuff so multiple people can play, either in a co-op or battle mode. Give the player models more skins, have each skin have a different melee sword!

And there is no fucking health anywhere. this is doubly fucking annoying because other than the cyber/spider demons there is almost nothing but packs of revents, with smaller groups of mancubi and archviles. All attempts have failed, because making just one full set of enemy sprites is a massive fucking undertaking, and making the entire bestiary even larger and more detailed is inherently doomed to fail because of how much of a monumental task it is.

I think he means sculpting in real clay. Which is less time consuming if you know what you're doing, but building yourself up to that point takes years of practice. So does 2D work, but I've met a lot of people that were great 2D artists and had to put a lot of time in to wrap their brains around 3D. And the opposite is true as well.

I don't think straight paintings would ever looks as natural in doom as a decent 3D model or traditional sculpt however. Though I don't think high res sprites and textures would look natural in doom in the first place, and it'd take some pretty impressive work to convince me otherwise.

>so they say
They say correctly. It's far easier said than done. A shit ton of work went into the MK model. Modeling, texturing, materials, rigging, animation, probably physics for the cloth, lighting and finally rendering... These are all jobs that in a proper 3D pipeline would be dedicated to one or more person. The real reason this hasn't been done is because nobody talented enough had felt it worth the effort. And truth be told, it's probably not worth it for reasons >>1887592 laid out. At this point people have pretty much accepted the standard resolution sprites. >> No.1888385

Literally everything? Well it wouldn't be too hard to do textures I suppose. SLADE has a method to convert from one palette to another. The only problem is Doom's palette isn't suited for Heretic's textures soooo...
You could probably avoid that by converting all the textures to PNG which would make them truecolor under GZDoom and paletted under Software. Not sure if SLADE can batch convert to PNG.

As for decor and obstacles, you may be able to convert them the same way. The tedious part would be renaming them to the same thing as the Doom items, or equally tediously making DECORATE entries into the WAD

>> No.1888468

Yes, you can batch convert patches to truecolor PNGs. Just select all the patches, right click, go to Gfx > Convert to... and select Conver to: PNG (Truecolour). Then click on Convert All.
