1883173 No.1883173[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

In your opinion, does Ocarina of Time still hold up to this day? Has anyone here played it for the first time recently? If so, please tell me your thoughts.

I feel I'm a bit biased since I remember back when the game was brand new and I thought it was the coolest thing ever at the time - I played it multiple times over those 16 years, and while I still can go back to it and enjoy it, I understand my vision might be a bit clouded by nostalgia.

oddly enough I played MM before OoT. My first Zelda was ALttP.

played OoT around 2010

i do not see the big deal.

>>1883178
Majora's Mask is pretty much the only Zelda game I would recommend not playing before another one (OoT). Most of the games are fairly stand-alone but I think it's practically required to play OoT first in order to enjoy MM to its fullest.

>> No.1883271

>>1883173

I played OOT when it first came out. Beat it then, it was great. Didn't touch it until the 3DS remake.

Played that. I'd say the game has held up pretty well. Speaking purely from a gameplay standpoint, the game is fine.
Nintendo struck gold with Z-targeting. That completely makes the battles in the game timeless. Because you never have to fight the camera, it's just going to work.

So yea, game holds up. It's got variety.

I never grew up with nintendo and only just recently played the game for the first time on the 3ds, and found it a very good game. Though personally, I find the top down zelda games more enjoyable.

>> No.1883567

played it for the first time recently, it's good but nowhere near the EPITOME OF GAMES that it's praised to be and frankly i have a hard time not being constantly annoyed about the terrible framerate

>> No.1883576

The pacing is shit though, like you start the game listen to a bunch of bullshit then 5 minutes later your hit with more bullshit the game doesnt ever just shut the fuck up and let you play. Also the pacing of items in the game is pretty bad in some parts like you get 4 tools at once then nothing for a while it should have been spread out a bit better. I still like the game but when people praise it like the best of all time it makes me rage. Its good yes but definitely overrated.

It hasn't. The control is clunky, the platforming is floaty, the hit detention is weird, the aiming is horrible the field of view is pretty limited and the camera loves to film walls instead of your fightings a lot of times.
The setting, the music, the story and the characters are still great, but it has aged poorly.

Of course it's good, it's a Zelda game. The problem is that it's really overrated because compared to most of the 5th gen 3D shit at the time this was glorious. It still has aged poorly anyway, and not because of the graphics, but because of the gameplay.

OoT was a game that, upon first playthrough, I was in heaven. It was an utterly beautiful experience. I used to actually daydream about playing it in school during class and couldn't wait to get home and play it (I never daydreamed about playing other games before or again in my life. I did want to go home and play games, of course, but I wouldn't actually daydream about playing them. That's how immersed I was in OoT's fairy tale world). However I never felt like replaying it again and didn't until maybe 15 years later. I've only ever played it twice in my life; for me it doesn't have much replay value. It was still a great game but I just didn't feel the magic of that first time. That might have to do with not being 12 anymore though. Also it was emulated the next round so for me that detracts from the experience due to bugs and graphical inconsistencies/glitches.

Link's Awakening is my favourite Zelda game and I think it never fails to give me feels. I've only replayed that maybe four or five times at the very most though.

It can if you position it at certain angles on some levels.

That said, maybe I'm being a little too hard on it, but I didn't really enjoy it as much as you did. If you do, good for you. Different strokes I guess. I honestly thought Spyro 1 did SM64's camera better on most aspects.

Ocarina of Time was a great game when it came out in the late 90s. Compared to most fully 3D games of the era, it looked awesome. Also we hadn't had a non-handheld Zelda game since the beginning of the SNES and the series made the jump from 2D to 3D really well. Sure, it has its flaws but it is still quite enjoyable especially if you're a fan of the Zelda series.

>the overworld is empty as hell
>the combat is mostly about waiting for enemies to show their weak spots, it's not engaging or challenging (including most bosses)
>literally the only characters with even half of a personality is Link's harem (and no characters with developed personalities, obviously)

I generally like the dungeons, they're themed well and there's a lot of content there. The general feel of the game is excellent, in terms of environment. 6/10 one of the worst retro Zeldas but not a bad game.

There's just nothing there. It isn't challenging at all. And even in a "how fast can a kill an enemy" sense it's just a question of timing B to match the enemy's ticks. There's absolutely nothing dynamic about it.

Zelda II has the best combat out of any Zelda game, but the overhead view games and the later 3D games all had better combat than OoT/MM.

I don't recommend the XL. The low-resolution combined with the large screen size and no added anti-aliasing or anything makes games a little too ugly for my tastes.
The regular size isn't much better, I'm afraid. Both of them look ALMOST great, but the XL just stands out more.
If you want the 3D (I don't care for it, it adds nothing to any game I've played), get the regular size. If you don't, get the 2DS, it's not like you're some turbonerd who actually brings their portable consoles out of your house anyway
