Would /vr/ call Xevious a classic?

>> No.1882023

>>1882015
Well, it is.

>> No.1882024

I don't see why not

>> No.1882029

The guy who made Xevious also made pic related

Of course! It's one of the earliest examples on a vertically scrolling shooter, and not only that, it's a blast to play nearly 30+ years later.

>> No.1882092

>>1882029
Wouldn't Spacewar technically be the first top down shooter? Xevious might be the first scrolling shooter though.

And yeah, definitely a classic.

i played that. it's more fun than it sounds/

best bgm ever

Maybe I should have asked if it deserves that status? It doesn't seem to be talked about or remembered as fondly as Namco's other hits.

I personally respect the multi-layer gimmick it introduced.

>> No.1882184

I vastly prefer the likes of Galaga and Stargate. Xevious may be one of the first scrolling shooters but it just doesn't have much going for it besides the scrolling.

>> No.1882227

>>1882184
I personally think that Defender 2 was a better game than Stargate.

>> No.1882712

>>1882015
Is there an ending to that game?

>> No.1882715

>>1882712
GCCX tried to see if there was, and no. There is not.

It's colorful, but the repetitive music is annoying.. Overall I much prefer to play Galaxian and Phoenix, or later games like Terra Cresta, Dangar, and especially the Amiga game Hybris (it's heavily inspired by Dangar).

There's also an old (90's era) Unix/X11 remake of Xevious called "xbat":
http://www.big.jp/~eizo/xevious/xbat/index.htm
It's one of the few Unix shoot'em up games I enjoy, other than Maelstrom and XGalaga (but can't get that last one to compile anymore, and the SDL version isn't as nice).

How did MOTHER 2 get away with having the xevious music in the game´s arcade?

It's very subtle.

Definitely a classic. Way ahead of its time. Still fun to play.

xevious ain't got shit on galaga

>> No.1883383

Gradius is better than both

>> No.1883387

I prefer Nichibutsu and Compile shooters, but Xevious isn't too bad. The "music" was overrated in its time. Some very nice visuals, though.

It's hidden under a bunch of other sounds

much like a real arcade
