On the other hand, Sony seemed to love Wipeout enough to give it THREE fucking entries within a 4 year span (W1 in 1995, W2097/XL in 1996, and W3 in 1999). Too bad SCE Liverpool got canned; would've loved to see what technowizardry they could do on the PS Quad.

Though, as you said, F-Zero's fate is quite sad as it's an excellent series. Nintendo could probably print jew gold if they try to appeal to the HURF DURF FAWLKEN PAWRNCH crowd with a new F-Zero but there's no guarantee the results would be favorable.

At least both series died honorable deaths, unlike Ridge Racer.

In the interests of improving board quality, I'll give you a reasonable response to this.

For much of the time period covered by /vr/, arcade games had hardware which was unavailable in home consoles. Many home ports of arcade games were cut-down significantly, featuring less animation, fewer special effects, reduced color palettes, lower screen resolution, etc. Getting the coin-op hardware yourself was hundreds to thousands of dollars per game, and required custom (or special-order) equipment to run. A good gaming variety back then involved both home machines and coin-op machines.

My tastes normally skew toward the 16-bit era but I feel like 5th gen is where the best racing games live:

Ridge Racer Type 4 is and shall remain the absolute king or retro racers for me. The perfect arcadey handling, the wonderful soundtrack, the courses that mix up the old and new in surprising ways, and - though I never thought I'd praise this in a racing game: The deliciously hammy daytime-soap-opera melodrama plots for each team. It doesn't hurt that it looks lovely, too, both technically and in terms of art direction.

Wipeout XL/2097 deserves a mention too. Another one that just seemed to get everything right and land at just the right time in my life that it really got its claws in.

No love for Wave Race 64 yet? Still an absolute pleasure to play these days. The great water physics and the way they really do dictate the path you take around a track make this one for me. You really do feel like you're racing on real bodies of water. Looks lovely, sounds lovely, and just has that Nintendo 'magic.'

Retro racing games I still play:

ReVolt (PC) - very good physics, nice game progression, competitive AI, at one time had a sizeable modding community and there are thousands of custom cars and tracks available, some of them of astonishing quality.

Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now (PC) - not so much a "racing" game, since getting to the end of the race isn't really the point. Good physics, decent AI, engaging gameplay, lots of custom cars available.

Powerslide (PC) - brilliant physics - absolutely best experienced with a force feedback wheel. Very competitive AI. Interesting concept.

Stunt Race FX (SNES) - mostly cheesy but still oddly satisfying physics, fun gameplay, earworm soundtrack.

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge for the Amiga predates it and is better.

Also, Top Gear Rally for the N64. Learn to wallride the corners. It's a glitch, sure, but so was bunnyhopping in Quake. In both cases it's the best thing in the game, and a truly unique control method to learn, with it's own payoff.

Wikipedia notes:
>A noted game-play flaw with the Nintendo 64 version of the game is that it is possible for the player to gain an immense advantage over the computer players by riding the rails on the sides of the road in most tracks. The rails don't slow the car down nearly as much as normal cornering or drifting, allowing the player to maintain top speed even through very sharp turns.

That's not all though. Entering a long, smooth corner against the outside rail and steering as you normally would, but always to the point where it's never *quite* enough to leave the rail, will slingshot you around and give you a massive speed boost - up to about 50% higher than your car's normal limit. You can actually do it on most corners, you just have to work out the right shape and timing and make everything go smoothly

>> No.1884215

>>1884194
me again, sorry.

I should have mentioned that while it's not what the designers intended it does break the game as they set it up, you'll always win once you're halfway good at it, no matter what else you screw up. But it's also a real challenge to master because the controls are really sensitive, and handling the speed you generate and working it into new racing lines makes it really worthwhile if you enjoyed, say, Wipeout 2097/XL. The time trial mode is now great fun with friends :)

Beetle Adventure Racing is an oft-overlooked gem and one of the better racing titles on the N64 if memory serves

Hydro Thunder. I enjoyed it back in the day. Can't vouch for its quality now
