Puyo Puyo by Compile (now Sega) is a tough game to practice for new players, where speed, strategy and the memorization of patterns are key to winning the game! One of the best versions of Puyo Puyo is Puyo Puyo Tsu (2) for the Sega Geneis/Megadrive and other systems, that incorporate the gameplay changes and mechanics of the game series nearly perfectly for a competitive two player environment.

The game was designed from the ideas of Dr. Mario and Tetris, and is under the arcade puzzle game genre similar to these titles.

Connect four Puyo for them to pop and link up chains to score points and unleash more massive attacks on your opponent!

It's as Japanese as any game can get.

I'm better at Tetris.
I don't really like competitive games all the time.

They released Puyo Puyo Tetris recently and it's a lot of fun, I don't know if that counts as /vr/ though since it's 2 /vr/ games put together but it came out recently.

It's hard to make it a video game general too since it's two games.

But yes, Tetris and Puyo Puyo are still technically modern games. I don't even know if this thread belongs here...

Is it acceptable to talk about Madou Monogatari here too?

>> No.1877693

I've always felt like this series has too much of a positive feedback mechanic in play. When one player gets the upper hand their advantage just keeps piling on until they win. Fever feels a lot more balanced but isn't retro.

>> No.1877829

>>1877693
I feel like that's part of the game, you gotta lay your side down quick and doing that is hard, you can make a mistake mentally or even fumble the controls. Even still you can be setting up chains and your opponent can just ruin it for you leaving you with half a screens worth of stuff you can't even get to now, giving them the advantage.

>Even still you can be setting up chains and your opponent can just ruin it for you leaving you with half a screens worth of stuff you can't even get to now, giving them the advantage.
That's what I'm talking about with the positive feedback mechanism. So now you're busy trying to clear the garbage, but while you're doing that your opponent has pretty free reign to setup more devastating chains. It often feels like the game is won before it's finished.

>> No.1877872

>>1877870
Maybe, I'm not sure though. Personally I tend to go into some tense overdrive mode when I get all that garbage and just pop 3's REAL fast and then turn the tide. It's usually a nice push and pull for me and my friends. You have to learn how to deal with them dumping all that on you, the only exception is when they blow a super big chain and just ruin you completely.

I love Puyo Puyo

Its probably one of my favorite puzzle games next to Tetris Attack (obviously not the yoshi palette swapped one) and the original tetris on gameboy.

Its just too goddamn hard. Like literally unfuckingbelievably hard for no reason on single player. Playing with friends would be fine, but fuck the difficulty curve in most of the Puyo puyo games.

>> No.1877902

Tetris Attack is a palette swapped Panel de Pon.

Also I agree those Puyo Puyo bots can be difficult.

It would be if any of the games would be translated.

Someone please write a compressor for that 32bit Compile compression format, so we can start injecting text to the Saturn Madou Monogatari and Waku Puyo Dungeon games.

You'd be surprised at how easy the games get with a bit of practice. The Fever era games are still tough because the ai is smart, but the compile era games are easy once you know how to deal with the fast drop speed. The ai kills itself half the time because it can't deal with small nuisance attacks cluttering the field.

Don't worry, last week's thread had a lot of beginners. Quite a few matches were won by people at your skill level (we were playing fever).
If you'd like to download the game in advance, you should read this.

That /v/ thread went pretty well last night, the Op said he'd probably make another thread next Friday, so this might end up becoming a regular thing.

Perhaps, in the future, it'd be better to make an all-inclusive puzzle games thread instead of just one for Puyo Puyo. /vr/ is a pretty slow board so it helps to be more inclusive.

I hope this doesn't 404 because I need some help.

I just got puyo puyo tsu remix and am loving it. The problem is that the drop speed in 2-player mode is way too fast.
I looked through all the options and I'm fairly certain that you can't change it. And I've already ordered puyo puyo sun and puyo puyo 4 because they seem awesome as well.

So my question is, can you change the drop speed for 2-player in any of these games? Or do I just have to get used to it?

>> No.1896801

>>1894189
Not that I know of.

But the drop speed in the pc version of Puyo Puyo Sun is about the same as the drop speed in Super Puyo Puyo Tsu , if not identical. I'm not sure how slow you want it to be, but it's really not all that fast is it? Does the remix have a faster default drop speed or something?

4 is a bit weird. They way the pieces drop down is pretty odd, so the controls of the game might throw you off. The drop speed in that game is noticeably slower than in the other games though, so you might like that.

I like fever personally, and it's easily the second most popular game type. I think most people who dislike it are more upset about the shift in art style and writing than the new game mode.

The new art style is great, and I don't see the problem with Fever mode existing as a different option, as long as Tsu rules are still available for those who want it.
