>mfw people say that Final Fantasy VII had good graphics for its time
The backgrounds were gorgeous, and the battle character models were okay I guess, but the normal overworld character models were seriously some of the ugliest gaming has ever seen and they clash with the backgrounds in my opinion. The characters look extremely alien, like they don't belong in that world. Why do people act like the graphics were revolutionary at the time? Link's character model in the Ocarina Of Time TECH DEMO look better than Cloud's model in the FINAL product, which came out years later. Why do people still defend this ugly game?

FF7 is an overrated game all around

don't worry about it, it's just one of those things. it's not a good game, it just came out at exactly the right time

everyone just loves it because it was babbys first JRPG. It'snot that good at all. But most 3d FF games were highly overrated BECAUSE of the fan following built on 7 that refused to believe their precious franchise was fallible.

It was a huge step back from FF6. At least VI didn't try to look "realistic" or anything. I'd rather play a sprite-based game that doesn't even try to be 3D than the blurry mess that is FF7.

I always find that argument hilarious myself. I assume it's usually just kids running their mouths who weren't actually around back then or something.

The reality is that games that had come out 2 years prior had better graphics than FFVII. There's several theories about why, everything from "it was originally intended for the N64" (witch is bullshit, especially when you consider that N64 had better graphics in general) to "they compressed everything a ton to fit it all" (witch is also bullshit, as FFVIII and FFIX look worlds better and are only one more disc each.) But no one really knows why. It's a fucking mystery!

Final Fantasy VIII was gorgeous. The opening cutscene looked like an early gamecube game. FF7 was ugly and outdated even for its time.

The graphics aren't even the worst of its problems. The frame rate was fucking awful. I know they used slow motion a lot (most notable during the scene when Aeris dies) to cover this up, but it just came of as cheesy and overly dramatic. The only thing worse than awful graphics is struggling to display awful graphics.

The only time there is slowdown is in cutscenes. So who the fuck cares.

Maybe you're a poor faggot emulating it. But there is zero slowdown in actual gameplay on a ps1.

I do own it for the original PS1. I actually have the rare misprinted version and I play it on the original hardware that it was meant to be played on, and would have been played on at the time. It still sucks. Also, there's no excuse for not supporting the analog stick.

>The backgrounds were gorgeous

They were simple bitmaps of pre-rendered ugly CGI, in extremely low resolution, and awful colour depth masked by dithering. They could've at least used hi-res, since they only needed to have 1 fucking background and the overworld barely used any textures beyond the menu font.

Considering that the game came out before any dual analog controller outside of that odd twin joystick monstrosity, they have a pretty fucking good excuse.

FF7 Japan release date: January 31, 1997
Dual Shock Japan retail release: November 20, 1997

FF7's development was complete before the DS1 was even in manufacturing. Square might have heard that a new controller was being released, but the disks were being printed a full year before the public could get their hands on analogue sticks.

>Also, there's no excuse for not supporting the analog stick.

FF7 went gold in January 1997. The DualAnalog controller, which nobody on earth bought, wasn't released until April. Then the DualShock, the controller that actually sold, released in November, long after the US launch of the game.

FF7 is a pretty fun RPG and its definitely a must-play if you're a fan of RPGs at all and own a PS1. Graphics haven't aged that well but it's not terrible. Prerendered backgrounds still look nice and the in-battle models are pretty good.

That being said, I think the Suikoden and Lunar games have aged much better because they went with 2D spirtes instead of early 3D models.

Those games came out years later. How can you be into videogames and not understand that the best looking or most technical games do not necessarily come out at the beginning of the console's life, since developers need to learn that platform over time to get the most out of it.

That's like saying Skyrim looks better than Oblvion on Xbox 360 AND NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHY.

About the discs, too- Final Fantasy 7 assets fit on one disc and all the main data is present on all three, the only difference are the large FMVs.

>> No.1874828

>>1874714
I agree, it looks like shit, but they were going to make the jump to 3d eventually, or they'd be muscled out in an industry that increasingly demanded and expected 3d graphics.

If it wasn't this game it'd have been the next one. They had to do it sometime and they weren't likely to get it right on the first try.

I'm not even trying to defend FF7 as I think it's over-rated teen angst dross, but come on.

I thought FF7 had gameplay graphics like what was shown in its commercial. It turned out to be not what I've expected when I saw the ingame screenshots in a magazine. Even back then game looked fucking ugly when it first came out.

>> No.1874949

FF7 was developed over long period of time when 3D graphics were rapidly advancing. The problem is they had already used their server farms to generate those FMVs and 3D backgrounds with a particular polygon style, and it was hard to go back to change it.

Lego men was really done for consistency.
